The Worst Is Yet to Come: Anonymous Talks To PlayStation LifeStyle
After extensively covering Anonymous’ attack on Sony, PlayStation LifeStyle’s news was heavily referenced across the internet by other gaming sites, but they weren’t the only ones to take interest in our articles. Anonymous had noticed, and they wanted to talk.
After waking this morning, I checked Anonymous’ IRC, a secure chat system used by the group to co-ordinate their attacks, after scrolling down a few pages I noticed something – Anonymous were looking for me. User Takai stated on SonyRecon’s IRC “Find me Sebastian Moss… Wanna talk to him”. Subsequently, other members replied “There’s his twitter dude, I can get his email if you want… Moss is a member of GamesPress.com – his details will be easy enough to find.” Anonymous were closing in: “okay Mr Moss lives in central london” continuing “hey sebastain if your here wanna just go ahead and give us your phone number?… cause we’re going to find it”.
Dubbed by some as “giant killers”, its generally not seen as a good idea to incur the wrath of Anonymous, who were able to not only bring Sony down, but governments, Mastercard and US security firm HB Gary. However, while Anonymous has few rules, they do have a very strict one against attacking the press – as supporters of free speech, they must allow journalists to write what they want, even if they don’t like what is written. Takai told the members of the chat ” He is NOT a target”, repeating that I should not be intimidated or threatened.
Checking my Twitter, I had received a message: “Join our IRC #SonyRecon under the username BoltMoss72. Anon has a statement to make”. Anonymous has no formal leader, and instead any member can contribute to the group and suggest actions or make statements, but the SonyRecon IRC was almost unanimous – they had something to say to me.
I joined the chat soon after, still slightly nervous, updating my anti-virus software in a futile attempt to feel more secure. Takai immediately replied to my message, setting up a private chat room to talk. After looking at the IRC chat logs it was clear that Takai, while not a leader, did have a disproportionately high input in the chat, and the group’s actions. I asked Takai if he (gender assumed) would classify himself as “a current driving force behind SonyRecon” and he agreed, but later was careful to clarify that he had “not actually admitted to what [his] particular role in the operation is”, and light-heartedly that “perhaps [he is] merely a cheer leader”.
Takai believed that the FBI, along with Sony and Prolexic were watching the main group’s chat (but not our private conversation), so he chose his words carefully, ensuring he never technically admitted to any wrong doing. However, he said that he did not fear Sony coming after him, and that “they have bigger things to worry about than I”. He also joked that about the FBI watching them: “They’re names in a list. If they want to hang out and chat, by all means. Maybe they can help ddos!.. I hear the government has a fast connection or two 
”
Hired by Sony, Prolexic are a company that specialises in defeating DDoS attacks – the kind currently used by Anonymous to bring down Sony. A powerful opponent, Prolexic have mostly managed to keep Anonymous at bay. Takai, however, seemed relaxed about the company’s defenses – “It was expected. We knew sooner or later Sony would enlist outside help”. Pressed on whether Anonymous would take out Prolexic, Takai showed confidence in the ‘hacktavist’s’ upcoming retaliation, stating “well, if I had to put money on it … I’d say, Prolexic is going down like a two dollar wh*** in a Nevada chicken ranch ”. He did admit that the company “is quite formidable” and congratulated “them for doing so well”, but again he warned “We do however have ways for dealing with the ‘Prolexic’ factor”. Hoping to not ruin the “big surprises” planned for Sony, he would not go into detail on what these ways were, refusing to comment on whether the site would be defaced – something that was considered in the main IRC.
It was clear that Anonymous have only just begun their assault on Sony, with Takai saying about the new defenses: “the last thing we want, is Sony thinking we were in any way discouraged”. He announced “[today] however is an important day for Sony”, threatening that far more was to come:
So far, all Sony has seen from us is poking and prodding. A simple salute to let them know, we’re coming. Make no mistake, what you saw today and thought to be frustration is merely preparation for what’s to come.
We said, expect us. Counting us out, would be a mistake.

For the sake of not shooting ourselves in the foot, I won’t comment on specific operational tactics we may or may not employ here. I will however say, that if Sony thinks LOIC is the only trick in our hat … they’re in for a hell of a wake up call. We’re really going all out for this one.

He also confirmed that this belief was shared by many others: “My belief and that of all those you see here and many many more is that Anonymous is not done with Sony”. And it’s true, the IRC is filled with anonymous Anons planning a big attack, but due to my presence, the discussions on actual plans are kept off the main lines. Well personally I understand why they are upset and attacking Sony but Anonymous to me is taking things to far to the point of their actions are affecting everyone on the Playstation Network. If your mad at Sony, fine, but don’t take things out on us Playstation Network users who want to sit down and have a great time playing videogames online.
I think that Geohotz was wrong in the first place to provide the hack. What he did was illegal, and therefore Sony has every right to sue him. Anonymous is crazy. We have an elected government for a reason. If we disagree with the laws, we have the power to change those laws.

No, we do not have the power to change the laws because the U.S. government has never listened to its people. The politicians do whatever it is that the corporations whose pockets they are in pay them do. Whether it’s voting a certain way or otherwise. Sony is being exactly the same in not listening to their consumers and restricting their freedom to do what they want with the hardware they bought with their own money. It’s foolish and Anonymous should continue to shake things up. It’s about time someone did.

Personally, I don’t care for GeoHot, Sony as a corporation, or Anonymous (proud to say that my /b/tard days were put behind me years ago), but this is still pretty shameful. The literally millions of PSN users that are being inconvenienced don’t sound like “collateral damage” to me. Sad to see that my PS3 is going to remain offline for the next few weeks (especially since Portal 2 and MK9 are coming out in the coming weeks, I guess I’ll have to play it on PC even though I prefer the DS3 for most games), but as long as anon is being petulant there’s nothing we can do.
They seem to have a very warped sense of view of the world, they seem to think that their view rises above anyone else’s and only they matter. What I find funny is that they seem to think that Sony is some kind of giant picking on little kids, well GeoHot made things worse for himself by withholding information and running away, only people who know they have done wrong run. What does that tell you?
It is also funny how they seem to think of themselves as “shadow warriors” who only emerge out of the shadows because they are the ones who keep the world in check. Give me a break.

Seriously it hurts gamers and consumers the most, by destroying the PSN they are essentially destroying the machine and the games as well. Online gaming, updates and patches are core to the experience of using the PS3. No more multiplayer games, netflix services, etc etc. Thanks for ruining my machine.

I couldn’t agree more. OtherOS was also a core feature, no matter how many deny it and no matter how few cared (they certainly paid for it). So why is it that those that wanted OtherOS had to choose between these core features?
I said you don’t want to piss-off the Hacking community and look what is happening today. The day Sony made their knee-jerk-reaction and removed the other OS feature from the PS3 is what really pissed these guys off.
Do I support their cause? No. I do however know that they are not the only one in wrong here. Sony and this group are equally to blame for what is happening right now.

I’m not sure if it was actually a knee-jerk-reaction, because they pretty much built the slim without the OtherOS in mind. I don’t know.
I agree that Sony and every other major corporation make decisions that piss off a minority of their customers just to improve their bottom line all the time. Life sucks and you move on.
But think about it, a small group of people could cost Sony millions of dollars (potentially). They discuss it with their legal team, and feel like they could have a case. So they are suing said persons. Take it to the courts. A group of people that in a way support the people that are getting sued, decide to take the law in their own hands and punish Sony a corporation, some of their employees, even state/federal officials directly involved in the case.
Hows that fair? or Sony deserves equal blame?
If GeoHot etc. win their cases, they can ask for punitive damages (or something) for the money he lost in his defending himself. Wouldn’t that be fair?
On a side note, does he have to pay taxes on the money that was “donated” or gifted to him, the givers wouldn’t get a tax break unless it was significant enough.

You’ve got to realize the reason the do not attack you, Sebastian. Anons are trolls. They always have been, always will be. The reason you are not a target is because you are “spreading the word.” You are the press, and reporting on what’s going on is what gives them power. The more attention that you entitle them, the worse they get. Anons do things for the rush and excitement, because they aren’t able to work up the courage to race other cars in traffic or do anything legitimately ballsy involving showing their face, or their real voice. What is their goal? It’s like they’re living in their own world making up their own rules like it’s a mobster movie. “You will pay a security fee to use and we’ll protect your fine place of business here.” I don’t know what kind of case Sony really really has against GeoHot (tool) and whoever else, but that’s why it’s in court. Maybe your goal is to turn the Playstation into the Dreamcast? ~I don’t feel like I’m being treated as a potential criminal. I buy games, play mp online, watch netflix etc. Pretty much what everyone else I know does.
~ I believe Sony believes they have a case against George, and the Judge must have felt there could have been relevant evidence within George’s personal property. Not sure about the consumer rights that have been violated?
~ I believe that if the person(s) who decided to pull the plug on the OtherOS, could of honestly have concerns with the security of it. Maybe that’s why Microsoft has never let you put Windows on the XBox. There probably was a list of reasons, and security could have been one.
~ Whatever means that Germany handles arrest warrants etc. is on the German authorities. To the best of my knowledge Sony doesn’t own a German SWAT team, though I would admit that would be cool.

WINDOWS IS THE X-BOX OS, Win2k to be exact. And with most of the server farms out their using some form of windows it makes it more likely, at least in the US, that MP connections will be better since they have access to code that can make it better for them to use the internet.

Really GeoHot is a TOOL, but he and Sony should have their days in court… Just after his vacation to South America that he could still afford because his lawyers were anonymously paid for (I presume)… But still let it play out in court, if it were some other country he might not be so lucky.
Ok….as someone who isn’t just a student of Simulation and Game Development but also an old member of the PSP homebrew scene before the stuff started being used for evil purposes I can honestly say that I do not want to be able to use the machine in that form. There are far too many people out there who plan on using these exploits for not-so-noble purposes (heck there’s a guy on Graf’s website asking:
“I will know if a homebrew application can remove the CD authentification for ps1/ps2 backup games in GameOS or if it’s possible when you’re Linux project will released?”-he asked to be excused for his English as he identifies himself as being French.
So no I do not believe that we should be able to tinker with our devices in a way that can ultimately be used for purposes outside of homebrewing. I’d rather just pay up to buy a PS3 dev toolkit the way you can buy a PSP dev toolkit.

How is sending a judge “Chocolate Rain” supposed to make Sony give us the right to do what we want with our system?
How is taking down PSN going to give us the right to do what we want with our systems?
Cause right now I can’t do what I want with my system.
How is hiding behind masks and shouting the battlecry “doing/do it for the lulz” going to show Sony that defenders of consumers and their rights should be taken seriously?

A long time ago before any of us were born for the most part, there was a movement of activism known as the Civil Rights Movement. They didn’t have the ability of being able to hide themselves as we do now.
They marched or conducted other various forms of activism in a non-violent manner that was not at the sacrifice of people who were not participating in it yet as like you they claimed to be doing it for their sake in order to bring about change from the society at large.
Instead of just doing mere pranks and then going about their day, they were attacked verbally and ultimately physically by those of power, to the point where people actually lost their lives or endured tremendous pain and personal sacrifice.
These people were brave souls to fight for their beliefs in how the system should work for them.
I have yet to see any of you Anon willing to do the same, instead I see that you consider us to be the “collateral damage”. Sounds to me like we are nothing more than human shields or hostages as it were.
If there is anything I’d like for you to take from this dialog that I am trying to start with you, it is this:
Those activists managed to get the society at large to take notice of the little person how?
By first conducting a boycott. I believe that this course of action if done by us (i.e. Anon and gamer alike) would allow us to force coporate heads who don’t allow the consumers power to take notice, as when sales drop they lose money and in order to gain it back they will have to do what we want. I’m sure you’ve been keeping up with how publishers pretty much justify their dealings in order to make a bigger profit. It’s clear that money is what they care about, take that away and they will listen.

First off, I agree with the guy who said the most Sony will do at the end of this would be write-off the PlayStation line and the PlayStation becomes the future dreamcast. Seriously, do you truly think that Sony gives a damn about what you’re doing? They’re a multi-billion dollar company; they probably saw what did and said something like “Uh-oh, they shut down PSN, I’ll call one of the service teams to fix it and after that I’ll get back to all the other things that make us money; TVs, home theatres, movies that we have the rights to, etc.” What’s next annoyings (woops, i meant anonymous) are you gonna start attacking Best Buy for selling Sony products, consumers are “collateral damage” right?
Secondly, all this hacking is wrecking online gaming as it is. There’s a reason that most video game companies have stopped (for the most part) paying attention to online gaming on the PC. The next thing you know, game companies simply create online multiplayer for PS3 and that’s it, giving all their attention to the online portion for XBOX because their games aren’t being hacked and screwed over nearly as much. OOOOOOOOO your number 1 on PS3 COD: Black Ops because you hacked your way there; you’ve wrecked the multiplayer for everyone (those who can play well and those who can’t).
In the end, Sony doesn’t give a damn if you shut down PSN one way or the other, they make billions every year on everything else they sell; the PlayStation is just one teeny-tiny little portion of that. All I have to say is that I hope the FBI nails your asses.
Oh and 1 more thing to think about; you say that the developers should be paid for the games they make, yet you are the ones who are going to bootleg every game you want, thus not paying a dime. All I can say is you guys should run for office cuz your starting to sound like the American government!

Sony still reserves the right to just cancel psn, with the money there saving my not running the network etc they can afford to make a price drop. And it will be like the ps2 versus xbox, or more maybe like a high def wii. Regardless we will have an inferior game console that will sell like hot cakes. You will still have some companies will still make online MP on their own server, but thats only a tease. Okay, I can completely understand where they’re coming from. Protecting the little guy is always a noble cause, and I can respect that. But their view of who the “litte guy” is, is sadly mistaken.
I’m a 20 year old and I’m working my ass off to put myself through college to hopefully get a decent job to have a good life. I get paid minimum wage, work 515am-11am, go to classes, do homework, and go to bed. That’s my weekly schedule.
Finally I saved up enough money to buy myself a ps3. When I have the free time to actually sit down and play it, I feel pretty damn lucky. I do have a decent internet connection, and I mostly play online. I also like to get the occasional dlc, so I have my credit card number saved to my account. Even though they claim to not be after our money (which I like to believe is true) it still scares the hell outta me, knowing someone has access to my card, and could take everything I have away from me.
Now, the console I bought with hard earned money, and the one perfect outlet I have to relax after a long week of bustin my butt, is being ruined.
Who is the real “little guy” here? Is it the guy who knowingly “abused” the product he bought, knowing full-well that there would be consequences? Or is it me. The guy who saved up his birthday money and extra cash to buy one positive thing in a rough time in my life.
And the people who are standing up for the “little guy”? They consider me “collateral damage.” Nothing more. To them, my satisfaction and happiness is expendible. And they’re doing the noble thing?
Maybe they do have a point. Maybe there is a good reason to stand up and fight back… but not like this. Not this way. Not at the expense of the real “little guys” who sit down after a long day, and all they want to do is play some games online.

Alright, I think they just need to get their noses out of my time. I don’t have all the time in the world to game, many things have to work out now for me to be able to do so. First off, i will state that until the sony attack i only knew of them from the youtube porn day attack.
Today though i read up on everything i could about them and alos looked at the anon website that shows anon vs scientology, after reading articles and watching videos etc. it seemed to me like they had done some really awesome things.. like the support of wikileaks and when they were provoked by that stupid baptist church place so they showed them they weren’t to be messed with. Not only that but words they had stated, the way the acted amongst these situations was extremely mature, which is where i was kinda shocked.
Because what they have done so far has been very immature(and hey im not hating on the guys, this is just my opinion for this specific act.. feel free to contact me guys i’d love to chat also although i don’t run a blog or anything) but yeah anyway, it seems so immature. Not only does it contradict what they stand for, but it’s also under what seems to be false reasoning. I mean they are smart guys yet for some reason they are ignoring the fact that the hackers being sued by sony were completely in the wrong.
For a start if geohot didn’t go for the fame factor and just hacked the ps3 without releasing the detail on how to do it, sony wouldn’t have removed OtherOS which is pretty much started this whole sony vs hackers thing to explode. What im saying is, it’s a different case when he’s releasing details that affect more consumers(in a bad way) than it satisfies hackers. It’s the kind of information sony has a right to try and protect for the sake of the consumer.
He was in the wrong for what he did, sony had the right to sue him, plus why support a hacker who’s in it for the wrong reasons? All he wants is the fame.
As for sony gaining access to IP’s they didn’t use them to sue everyone that visited geo’s site did they? no.. they used them to cross check which were active on PSN and to remove any using CFW on the network(because it was being plagued by cheats), which again is for the sake of the customer.
I agree that the way sony have acted has maybe been a little too ‘heavy’ however at the same time they made choices that were for the sake of the consumer.
Surely as smart as you guys are, you can tell that this whole situation is worse for the people you consider “collateral damage”. Your comment was obviously well thought out but you have some things wrong. There is evidence that Sony was planning to and did remove OtherOS because of financial reasons, not security reasons. There is also nothing wrong with hacking and telling others how to do it. Sure there are certain circumstances that hacking is illegal but the only thing protecting the PS3 was the TOS.
It hasn’t been proven that geohot accepted the TOS and even if he did it isn’t a legal binding contract. His CFW didn’t provide what was needed to play pirated games, someone created a patch to enable the syscalls necessary to play backups. Piracy also didn’t start with him, people were able to backup and play games for about 3-4 months before the secret to the PS3s security flaw and the keys were released. So what has he done wrong other than being an attention whore and showing others how to use their hardware the way they want?

Sony is a electronics company. They always have been. Sony arent a group of politicians writing laws. They sell tv’s, consoles, cameras, cell phones etc.
The ps3 is a closed console, with pc-like functions. Sony designed the console to be used in the way they intend for it to be used. Period. Thats why almost all of us purchased one in the first place, and most of us are ok with that. So why dont I feel like my rights have been violated? Actually, few factories were hit directly on by the tsunami, but some of Sony’s factories were hit HEAD ON by the tsunami. I didn’t fully understand Anons intentions at first, even now it’s still a bit sketchy but you people can twist things more than Sony ever could.
