Final Fantasy VI Joins Series Brethren on PSN

04/14/2011 Written by Heath Hindman

The PlayStation Network has been getting all kinds of old-school RPGs lately, with Legend of Mana and Xenogears arriving earlier this year and the future holding Chrono Cross and Final Fantasy V. Now, yet another of the biggest RPGs of the 1990′s is hopping in line, Final Fantasy VI.

This information comes via Shinji Hashimoto of Square Enix hitting up Twitter, who was the same source that revealed previous PSOne Classic announcements. Hashimoto says that this one comes due to a high number of requests from fans and is already set to arrive in the Japanese PSN store on April 20. Other regions will have to wait for further details.

Final Fantasy VI made its debut in North America under the title of “Final Fantasy III,” for Super Nintendo, named such because it was only the third in the series to make the swim, with the real parts II, III, and V having been left behind and IV being renamed to II. It’s rather confusing, which is one reason why it was nice to see Squaresoft axe the renaming when VII came out for the original PlayStation. Final Fantasy VI was re-released on PlayStation along with V as part of Final Fantasy Anthology, which is how it can be considered a PSOne Classic.

We’ll announce more info as it comes forth.

Darn it, if Square Enix releases another Final Fantasy game on PSN I will be very happy :) .

  2. ill check it out but they are just getting lazy putting them as psone classics , they should have releaesd it as a psn game instead , re render the graphics to support hd , and trophy support , instead they just stait up port it as a psOne classic.

I agree with you, Square Enix really should do that but they are probably not going too.

    • I would rather they do as they are doing and quickly put these Playstation versions up for download. We would never have recieved Legend of Mana, Xenogears and Vagrant Story all within a month of each other if they were doing full remakes, let alone having Chrono Cross and multiple FF games on the horizon. I’d also rather Square spend their resources developing better RPG’s for current consoles then rehashing Super Nintendo games for the umpteenth time.

Yeah, I understand what your saying and I agree with you. We all should just be happy with what we have instead of complaining about what we don’t have.

I need them to release the real III, since I’m trying to play them in order on my PSP. Then IV and V , then I’ll get to VI

Didn’t SE make remakes of these games already for the Nintendo DS? Why don’t they release those on PSN?

    • No, they remade 3 and 4 for DS. The new ones coming to PSN are 5 and 6, which were not remade on DS.

      • themule says:

Well, 5 and 6 were already on PSone so that’s why they’re coming to PSN, same as they were on the anthologies, too bad since the DS remakes look even prettier, they should do that treatment to 5 and 6, which are the best 2D FFs. But they should port 3 and 4 for PSN too.

    • MINECAR says:

No, 3 and 4 were remade on the DS, quite well actually too, but these are just straight up PSX ports. Square has discussed remaking 5 and 6 for the 3ds though, who knows if that’ll happen.

Western PSPs are getting a HD port of 4 in the coming weeks with a more adult looking HD update along with the sequel Cell/Wiiware game and a new story arc that connects the 2 games, but sadly it does have a removal of all the voice acting from the DS version(small sacrifice honestly).
