Sony Reveals North American Welcome Back Package

05/16/2011 Written by Sebastian Moss

After possibly losing your credit card details and personal data, and, more importantly, not allowing you to play online after taking the PlayStation Network down for over 3 weeks, some gamers demanded that Sony make amends and give everyone free stuff. Good news then, as they are.

The North American Welcome Back package has been detailed on the US PS Blog, and it’s very similar to Europe’s gifts other than for one game, more details on what PS Home users will be treated to and a rental movie offer.

For PS3 users, two games from the following:

  • LittleBigPlanet
  • inFamous
  • Wipeout HD/Fury
  • Super Stardust HD
  • Dead Nation

For PSP users, two games from the following (PSP and PS3 users will get both platforms’ freebies):

  • LittleBigPlanet PSP
  • ModNation Racers PSP
  • Pursuit Force
  • Killzone Liberation

Additionally, PSN users will receive:

  • A selection of “On Us” rental movie titles will be available to PlayStation Network customers over one weekend, where Video Service is available. Those titles will be announced soon.
  • 30 days free PlayStation Plus membership for non-PS Plus subscribers
  • Existing PlayStation Plus subscribers will be given 60 days free subscription.
  • Existing Music Unlimited subscribers will be given 30 days free subscription + time lost. [Previously, Sony said that all PSN members would be given 30 days subscription.]
  • PlayStation Home will be offering 100 free virtual items. Additional free content will be released soon, including the next addition to the Home Mansion personal space, and Ooblag’s Alien Casino, an exclusive game.

Users must have been an account holder on 20 April 2011, and you will have 30 days from when the welcome back program goes live to redeem the content.

Which games will you be choosing, or do you have all the games already?

  1. haha, of course, I own all the ones I would care to own… oh well, free super stardust for me, and dead nation too. God I’m still so sick of zombies though, I probably won’t even play it. Still no complaints here though!

If anyone grabs WipEout, challenge me to a race! I haven’t played in a long while, but I still love those games.

    • Super Stardust is an AWESOME game, trust me on that one. =) And it has custom soundtrack support. You’ll love it.

      • SPD55 says:

Yeah the PS3 package is not worth my time since I have all games but Dead Nation and I hate Zombie games because they take no real skill to pump lead into a mindless “cannon fodder” style of AI.

But I do have a problem with the PSP games since I have none of those so picking two is a lot harder.

Super Stardust HD was the best PSN Exclusive game to come off of the PSN to my HDD.

  2. That really is a SWEET package! And if you already have those games, just snag the HDD counterparts so you never have to throw em’ in your system. I don’t have Dead Nation, but I do have everything else, with the exception of the Fury DLC for Wipeout. Looks like it’s gonna be Dead Nation and… hmmmm… LittleBigPlanet for me. B)

  3. “PlayStation Home will be offering 100 free virtual items.”

    chicken costumes for everyone!!!

  4. Jawknee1 says:

Wow, maybe this will finally shut the whiners up.

I already own all those PS3 games. Maybe I’ll download inFamous and LittleBigPlanet just to have the digital copies.

As for the PSP game, probably go with Killzone Liberation and ModNation Racers.

    • Same here, except I’d get LBP for the PSP for my PSP Go XD
Only game I’d have that I don’t have that I plan on getting is Killzone Liberation
Hoping we get two PS3 and two PSP, COURSE if not I’ll just get the two PSP games and would be more than happy with those honestly.

  5. Definitely gonna be Infamous and LBP for me. I never got to do a good guy playthrough in my rental of Infamous and it’s always fun to see whats new with sackboy.

    • Jawknee1 says:

inFamous was one of those few games that unexpectedly wowed me. I was on the fence after playing the demo but decided to take a chance and just buy it. Easily one of my favorite games this generation.

      • I would have had a better experience with it if I hadn’t played prototype first. One of my biggest negatives while playing was that I was always thinking about how much easier it was moving around in prototype. Another being since Prototype runs through all the powers at the start in comparison Infamous had somewhat of a slow build up. It was a little annoying feeling like you’re pretty much playing a third person shooter after you KNOW there is going to be all kinds of awesome powers at your disposal. Towards the middle and end though you definitely notice that it is paced very well, and as you start to get better powers you get that much more excited every time you head underground. It’s going to be better this time I think since its been long enough that I don’t remember the order of powers really and I don’t have anything to compare to at the moment. And now I’m way too excited to not have a date for this yet haha.

  6. I got all the PS3 games but LBP. So, I’m excited for that!
And I don’t know what two games I should choose for my PSP..I was thinking LBP and KZ.
    Suggestion please..

    • Killzone on PSP is actually pretty good. They didn’t try to force the interface and worked with what the handheld had to offer. LBP on PSP is good too, but more like a watered down PS3 version, wheras KZ: Liberation is a wholly unique exoerience. I would absolutely reccomend LBP for PS3 and Killzone for PSP.

  7. Infamous and LittleBigPlanet are already chosen lol

  8. *sigh* looks like I’ll be settling for those free hugs…
    ;)
Actually I’ll likely get Wipeout and InFamous… Likely won’t bother with my PSP, but maybe Killzone

  9. DJ says:

LBP and Infamous. Yay! I don’t have either. I’m glad I waited now. LOL
    This is absolutely amazing.

    Bravo Sony. Brav-motherf-ing-o!

  10. Jatarious says:

I already have LBP and super stardust hd so guess il pick infamous been wanting to buy it anyways lol

  11. Bias1973 says:

Can someone answer me this? I own a PSP and a PS3 do I get from both columns? I don’t care either way , but four free games, is four more than I expected… I can’t ask in th Playstation Blog, so many people complaining, and demanding money be added to their PS wallets.. I wanted to so flip s!@# on those people … “I’ve been loyal since day 1, I have all of those games… GIMMIE GIMMIE … I’ll go to Xbox!” It’s terrible…

  12. lirky says:

Id rather have Assasins creed II than infamous based on how assasins creed II offered a different experience than infamous.

  13. Andrew says:

This is a pretty bad ass offer considering this whole thing wasn’t Sony’s fault so they really didn’t HAVE to do it. Sure, it’s a PR thing, and they were going to do something, but this is pretty damn cool of them. Kudos, Sony.

  14. tazinlwfl says:

LBP and InFamous for me… Though I have to make some room on my HDD. I’m not complaining, though :)

  15. ViperX2 says:

The only PS3 game on the list I haven’t played is Dead Nation. I’m glad I didn’t buy it when it was on sale for the GOTY awards on PSN. I really wish they would have made a list of 10 or even 20 games. I would have to imagine that there are a fair amount of people who have all 5 of those games since most of them are several years old.

I’m just glad that there is one on the list that I don’t already have, other wise I would have been very disappointed.

    • Andrew says:

I was kinda late to the PS3 party (I’ve had mine less than a year), so out of all of those games, I’ve only ever played Infamous (wasn’t a fan. I know. Sacrilege.). I’ll have to read up on these to decide which I want because I’m not familiar with any of them except LBP.

  16. philbo0042 says:

I own all that I want out of that selection. I appreciate what Sony is trying to do, but with such a small selection of freebies, they will upset some customers. They should expand the selection to at least ten.

  17. Axl Rose says:

Well the PS3 games I own them all but Stardust, so that will be the one, and PSP I own them all but LBP and ModNation, so those will do I was actually looking forward to pusrchase them so this is just plai awesome, and the fact that I will get my PSN+ subscription for 2 months on this time when I need it the most is just COOL for me! :D

  18. EcHo says:

With this officially being announced I hope this indicates the PS Store will be back online this week…..

  19. FiftyQuid says:

Do any of the electronic downloads ever expire? I have all of the games listed, except for DN, but I’m not a fan of it. I was thinking of downloading Wipeout HD. I have a digital copy already, but I think PS+ screwed up and allowed me to download it with a Canadian account. This was back when PS+ was first starting up. I see everything else I downloaded in my DL list except for Wipeout. So it makes me believe if I delete it, I won’t be able to download it again. I’d be getting a legit copy this time. :)

  20. Silenus says:

Dead Nation and InFamous for me. I’ve been considering Dead Nation though simply because it reminds me of Contra with zombies.

  21. dhughes60 says:

As I said in the other article I’ll be downloading Infamous and LittleBigPlanet.

  22. Rather then give us shit we don’t want couldn’t they jus let us choose games equal to the value of the games being offered to us. I don’t give a hoot about PS+ or any of those Free games. Hell i’d be happy with a 50 dollar Credit card to spend on the PSN Store. Theres only like 2 or 3 games I had my eye on.

  23. well i already own those but the 60 free days of ps+ is nice so with the 3 free months i had 15 months now i have 17 months of ps+

  24. Azaria says:

I have a European account, as well as a Japanese account, so hopefully I can redeem on all of them! I’ll be getting Dead Nation and probably Stardust HD. Assuming we can ALSO pick two PSP games, I’ll be getting Modnation for sure! I wanted the PSP version, so I’m glad I can get it free since it’s probably not as good as the PS3 version, which I own already. Not sure which other one I’ll pick, since neither interest me. Dead Nation just seemed like a fun one to get a few trophies in for the hell of it.

  25. vesra says:

such amazing greed for nothing. as unpopular as it makes me, i am so saddened. i own most of this list aside from one game. and i’m fine with it. people acting as if sony owes them so much. all in all it’s close to or well over a 100$ value being handed out. for the loss of a few weeks of a free network gaming service. sure, your personal info may have gotten out, they are also paying for everyone to get a full year of id theft protection in addition.

  26. Wow. There are two blockbuster games there.

  27. love it. cant complain at all.

  28. giese095 says:

Thank God there are two games on each platform that I don’t have yet. Dead Nation and Super Stardust for me. After seeing a 3D demo of Super Stardust in Best Buy I have actually been planning on picking it up as I am getting a 3D TV as soon as I move into my new house so this works out PERFECTLY for me! As for the PSP I’ll be getting ModNation and Killzone…When I wouldn’t have required anything from Sony (I still don’t blame them in the slightest) this is a pretty sweet deal. Not to mention 2 more months of PS+ for free!

    • giese095 says:

I was just thinking…because there are people out there who already have all those games it seems silly to only provide this specific list for free. It would have been better for everyone, probably, if they just deposited an amount of money into everyone’s PSN account. Oh well, it still works well for me and beggars can’t be choosers.

      • That wouldn’t work because you could spend that money on anything, and the dev for that game gets to pay for Sony’s welcome back package.

  29. I love the people who can still find a reason to bitch about free games.. those people are talented.

  30. NukeA6 says:

Free Infamous, Dead Nation, 30 day subscription to PS Plus, movie rentals, and 100 items in PS Home? FUCK YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  31. allentrill says:

I get 2 free digital copies of games i own on disc so now my nephews get the disc versions. I never rent movies cause i hate paying for it when i have netflix so free movies may be junk movies but hey no pay. extra month of ps+ yep thats 5 dollars to spend on discounted or dlc instead of plus for a month. Whats not to love? All i wanted was compensation for loosing a month of PS+ and Free Realms. Got it. Im satisfied. Personal info loose to sell? Somehow that doesnt scare me as much knowing im also gettin a year of ID theft protection. Now wheres our compensation from the hackers? They the ones i blame not sony.

  32. Wow this is extremely generous of Sony. I wasn’t expecting Sony to give away AAA exclusive games and combining with free one month subscription to PS+, this is awesome! Best of all PSN is free to play so Sony did not have to give away anything but they did. It goes to show Sony does care for their customers. This is why Sony and Playstation will always be the best for gaming.

Was playing Killzone 3 last night on PSN, to my surprise I still have what it takes and was not rusted at all. It’s funny how we take things for granted when they are free and do not realise what we will be missing when it’s gone.
