David O. Russell Leaves Uncharted Movie

05/26/2011 Written by Zak Islam

Renowned director David O. Russell – who has directed Mark Wahlberg in The Fighter – has made a sensational and unexpected exit from the movie adaptation of Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune.

Variety broke the news – insiders tell the website that split was down to the fact that it was “amicable and due to creative differences on the project.

Oscar-nominated David O. Russell had signed with the movie’s studio, Columbia Pictures, back in February, 2011. He was put in charge of directing the first movie adaptation of the Uncharted series.

Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer wrote the first draft of the script, but Sony has begun looking for new writers, despite liking the plot.

It’s definitely a surprising exit from Russell, considering the fact that he was reportedly extremely happy to join the team and direct the movie, however, considering the rumors of a Mark Wahlberg starring movie about a family of treasure hunters, maybe it is for the best.

The movie is rumored to release sometime in 2013.

Note to new director: Nathan Fillion

    • I know he’s a popular choice with many, but Nathan Fillion just isn’t cool enough to play Drake for my liking. Just too dorky to play the role the way I’d like to see it, but either way I’m not exactly filled with high expectations for a movie based on a game. (though I do have a weird thing for the Resident Evil movies) :p
      Oh well :)

      • Do you have any idea what you are talking about?? Nathan Fillion is the only person right for this role.

      • yea I gotta go with Cam on this one. Watch Firefly. I can’t help but think, man, that’s almost Drake in space. It wouldn’t take to much of a change to really match Drake’s attitude.

It had to happen. That guy had some kind of soap opera planned and he had every intention of ignoring the original story, characters (as they are in the game) and completely disrespect us the fans. As for the people asking for Nathan Fillion, I’m sorry but I can’t agree with you. I’d rather have Marky Mark than Fillion, at least he’s a proven actor (oscar-nominated, no less) , famous and with the right direction he could pull off an appropriate performance for such a movie (or so I’d like to believe). They need more than just a great leading star, though, but trust me when I say to you even if Russell had hired your precious Fillion he would’ve done a horrible movie. So at least he’s out of the picture.

    • Mark Wahlberg does not even fit this role at all but Nathan Fillion looks and acts EXACTLY like Drake.. not sure how people can go against that but I guess those people are happy with subpar movies.

Note to new director: Uwe Boll should not hear this news or unspeakable things might happen

  5. why not use the actors from the game for the movie? they would save money on actors and could use it in other places

    • Henke911 says:

They don’t really look like them, they just have the same body and voice.

      • themule says:

same body? not even close…Nolan North is short and kinda chubby, Richard McGonagle (Sully) has a big bald head and it’s completely out of shape (round-bellied), the Australian (?) voicing Chloe looks like a lizard and has none of her voluptuous physical attributes, and well, I guess Emily Rose looks kinda like Elena only hotter. xD <3

      • @themule – Chloe Frasier was played by Claudia Black, award winning actress for her role in the late 90′s sci fi series FarScape.

    YESS!!!!
He never get chance to destroy my relationship with Uncharted :D

    • I couldn’t lose my relationship with the game franchise just because the movie franchise is going to suck. No matter who directs the movie… its going to suck. they will lose sight of the plot and narrative that is already in place, they will commit actors who will not portray our beloved characters as we know them, and in all likelihood make several 100 million (WW) because there are more people who dont know anything about the game than do.
BUT… that will not take away from the genius of the games themselves and it would be a disservice to Naughty Dog for us to disrespect them while Columbia Pictures makes a mockery of ND’s hard work.
How many video game adaptions to film were actually good? Tomb raider, Resident Evil, … I cant think of anymore offhand. Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Super Mario Bros, Silent Hill, and Max Payne are still widely loved game franchises and presently successful or highly anticipated with their upcoming and newest releases. I dont believe that a crappy film franchise cant harm a great game franchise (or vice versa for that matter).

This is awesome, now I can get my hopes up about this move again! (hopefully they wont be crushed again)

Also I hope Sony told Mark W to GTFO and stop shitting in their kitchen.

Personally I could careless about who is directing the Uncharted movie and I could careless about who is acting in the Uncharted movie. I just want the movie to be great.
