Mass Effect 3 Rumored to Sport Four-Player Co-op

06/16/2011 Written by Cameron Teague

It feels like every game out there is trying to add some kind of multiplayer experience to their product in an attempt to enhance value, and the next developer to jump on the multiplayer bandwagon might be BioWare with Mass Effect 3. According to a Eurogamer report, ME3 will feature a four-player co-op component when it releases next year.

A source told Eurogamer that the co-op mode will be a “standalone” component that is separate from the single-player campaign and will feature “competitive elements.” They likened it to the Horde mode in Gears of War where you kill waves after waves of enemies until you die.

A separate source told the site that BioWare Montreal was creating a Multiplayer Mass Effect experience that would either be a standalone game or an additional feature tacked on to Mass Effect 3. Just last week at E3, BioWare co-found Ray Muzyka said that they are “exploring multiplayer in all of our games and all of our franchises,” but “haven’t talked at all about multiplayer in the Mass Effect franchise.”

Would you like to see multiplayer added and if so, what kind of multiplayer mode do you think would fit best?

  1. Not happening. Two much narrative heft in this game. Also, three player co-op would make more sense.

  2. After reading the article: I parlay my previous comment. That’s not that dumb of an idea.

Played Mass Effects 2 and tried to go back an play Mass Effects 1 and couldn’t stand it. Just got tired of the limited interactions and somewhat lackluster deviation in story based on decisions. Wish it had seriously several different outcomes not just two major ones with personal either living or not living. Maybe several different good and bad choice outcomes and keep the personal mess and special missions outcome influences. Adding Co Op is coo if flows well and stuff, but if that decision mess it’s tweaked in some way I’ll pass.

  5. As one of the biggest Mass Effect fans, please Bioware make this a standalone game not part of Mass Effect 3. ME1 and ME2 where single-player only games since this is the finale just leave it single-player make it the most amazing campaign with the best story in the series yet. Co-op, competitive, survival modes whatever just in another game all sounds cool. Why is it that developers think that a game that doesn’t have multiplayer doesn’t have replay value ?? With all the decisions carrying over from game to game that alone gives reason for replay value aside from the series being so freakin amazing.

  6. Playing through ME2 I couldn’t help but think the entire time that it’d be really cool if my buddies could take over the roles of my fellow squad members, if they had expanded skill sets to match those of Shepard’s. The conversation portions might be too long and drawn out, but it really wouldn’t take much to make the battles really fun in co-op.

They could definitely pull this off, but it’d be really dumb to cheap out with another horde mode. That seems to be every game’s co-op last resort anymore, and sorry but no, it’s super repetitive and immediately boring. I’d be all for something that would allow players to develop their own unique character with custom skill sets, specifically for leveling up in co-op missions. Think Borderlands + ME and call it Mass Effect Mercenaries or something like that.

With how troublesome it can be dealing with the friendly AI sometimes it would be a welcome feature imo, the fights would be much more fun and strategic.
