Character rosters are an incredibly important part of a fighting game and the Mortal Kombat franchise is no exception. After creating a faithful reboot, Ed Boon and the rest of the guys at NeatherRealm Studios gave fans exactly what they wanted in the form of downloadable characters. While the team wants to shift their focus over to new titles, they can’t deny the consumer’s demand for more characters.
Speaking with GameRant, Ed Boon explained how their initial plan was to bring gamers a total of four downloadable characters, with the recently announced Freddy Krueger capping off the list. That however, may change based on the sheer popularity of this type of content.
Our original plan was to do four [characters] and I think it’s all kind of being dictated by a number of things. One is our team’s ability. Obviously, we want to start the next games and what not. And then also demand for it – you know, if it’s just this crazy, ridiculous, success then we have to at least entertain the idea. For the most part [reaction has been positive] and this is the first time we’ve done it, actually the first time that any fighting game has really had a real downloaded character that wasn’t on disc.
As far as what their next game is… or “games” for that matter, it’s pretty safe to assume that a healthy dose of more Mortal Kombat will be headed our way.

Yesssss. MK9 was so awesome and it’s funny how the fans still ask for DLC. Let them work on the Sequel haha.
They’re the victims of their own success and now we have to have more mk9 awesomness, the mike myers and jason mention didn’t help them any…either way don’t bother me they have put forth a solid game with mk9 and the dlc was just sprinkles on the cake imo so I can deal with what we have now until the next game, but I think Mr. Boon loves his fans too much and we will see more
If he loved his fans, he wouldn’t charge for DLC in the first place… right?
If it were up to boon who knows what he would do but that’s something out of his control, I really don’t mind supporting the guys at netherrealm as they have and continue to demonstrate great work in everything they do.
sometimes I feel like DLC may be the only way Devs can get a bigger slice of the “profit pie.” Publishers probably take a very large chunk of any profit from the actual sale of the game but being that the Dev doesn’t actually need the support of a publisher to release DLC (no physical media, etc.) then they can make some money off of that. This is why I support the DLC for games I enjoy because I want to support the Devs.
Weren’t NetherRealms one of the first studios to hint that they had a “PSP2″ dev kit?
A 2012 MK Vita game would be great, now that I think about it. With ArcSys still refusing to make a GG game because of BlazBlue and with Capcom being evil in general, I’ve forgotten what it was like to actually be into a fighting game series again. Bring it on, Boon!
The game they are working on is…MK9 game of the year edition for $59.99. A big ole FU to all those who paid an extra $25 for all that DLC. Suckas!
I really don’t think so…usually a Game of the Year edition isn’t release unless there is a significant amount of DLC and I don’t think 4 characters would justify one…The only company that is really into screwing over the customers in that regard is Capcom (mostly because they aren’t allowing the owners of the current version of the game access to the content, forcing them to buy the new version)…every other GOTY edition I have seen with extra content has been justified and is only trying to grab those last few customers who need a better deal to open up their wallets.
hello …
I’m a big MK fan, after buying the Kollector’s edition i won’t go for a GOTY but certainly for their next game
I’m yet expecting & hoping for a DLC pack to get ‘em all @ once!
cheers!
whats the need for a new mortal komat game so soon? what a new story mode? come on now, this is the problem with the games this generation. make the current game we all bought and enjoy BETTER!
