PSP Outsells 3DS by 860% in Japan

Even Nintendo reps will admit that the GameCube didn’t live up to their own expectations or the level of hype they tried to put behind it, but what’s going on with the 3DS might end up making the Cube look stellar. Despite being an icon of the game industry, Nintendo is struggling to get its newest system off shelves and into homes; at six months old, its sales are less than half those of a system six years old. In the first week of August, Japanese system sales show the PSP outselling the 3DS by well over 8-to-1.

Here’s how the most recent Media Create hardware chart looked:

PSP: 35,619
PS3: 18,338
Wii: 17,004
DS: 8,178
3DS: 4,132
PS2: 1,529
Xbox 360: 1,406

The PSP is currently on pace for its 2011 Japanese sales figures to double those of 2010 — an odd feat for a system supposedly on its way out the door. With several big games looming in the future, namely JRPGs such as Black Rock Shooter: The Game, Final Fantasy Type-0, Grand Knights History, Growlanser IV, Makai Kingdom Portable, Ragnarok: Princess of Light and Dark, and 7th Dragon 2020, it’s certainly got the culturally relevant software to keep it afloat for a while.

It’s too expensive for Nintendo’s customers, and from what I’ve heard, the 3D effect actually hurts your eyes. When they try to get those same casuals to buy their Wii U, with it’s twin screens and resultant high price…good luck.

  2. PS2: 1,529

    MEGA-F-IN-LoL! ! ! :D

  3. Japan hasn’t mattered in console sales for almost half a decade.

I’m sure Nintendo did some market research before building the 3DS, but I have to scratch my head at who they spoke with. I talked to a couple of my cousins, my nephew and my niece about the 3DS. All four of these kids are 15 or under. 3 of them own a DS Lite. 1 owns a DSi. I asked all 4 of them what they thought of Nintendo’s 3DS and if they were going to get one. 3 of them didn’t know the 3DS existed. My nephew, the gamer geek of the four, was aware of the 3DS, but said the price was too high. So I told him the price was being reduced to $169. He said, and I quote, “It’s still too much. Mom won’t buy me a new DS. I don’t care about 3D anyway, I’d rather get an iTouch”

Based on my own research, either kids don’t want this thing, can’t afford it, their parents won’t upgrade their existing DS, or they are oblivious to its existence. Nintendo has their work cut out for them. Especially since the 3DS core audience is age 20 and under.

Oh, and I asked these same kids about the PS Vita. Only my nephew had heard of it. He wanted one, but said it was too expensive. I wasn’t really surprised by this since the Vita is being marketed to an older generation.

Take this info for whatever it’s worth to you.

My, xbox does look inferior when you look at that.

  6. Well Playstation is King after all in the land of the rising sun, and always will be. If i had $170 i would buy another PSP than to waste money on a 3DS, I expect the Vita to fly off store shelves (can you say “out of stock”) and I bet you it’ll sell more in a WEEK than the 3DS has in 6 Months.

Also PS2 outselling X360 is just some more proof that PS is the best
