When Hollywood director Guillermo del Toro announced that he would be working on a video game, the ears of gamers everywhere perked up. Over the past year, quite a bit of progress has been made on the project, as Del Toro has assured gamers that the first installment of inSANE is on track and will see completion within the next two to three years.
In an interview with MTV, Del Toro shed some light on the game’s current state:
We’ve been working for a year. We have two or three more years to go. It’s huge. I’m learning a lot. I’m going in with a really, really modest ‘I’m learning’ approach. I’m a huge gamer but going into constructing it, you have to be respectful of the medium. We’ve been designing the creatures, which are obscenely fun and unique. You haven’t seen them ever.
In addition, he went on to describe what to expect from inSANE in terms of gameplay and style:
We had to build a sandbox, so we designed all the architecture already.
It’s Lovecraftian, it’s really weird, but it’s Lovecraftian in a very sick way, which I like.
For those that are unfamiliar with the genre, “Lovecraftian” is a type of horror that is focused primarily on fear that stems from the unknown. It looks like Del Toro plans to mess with gamers’ minds rather than bombard them with cheap scares and gore. There’s no doubt that inSANE will be one to look out for when it launches in a few years.
2-3 years? That’s a long wait. This could possibly end up being a next gen game.
I just hope the controls aren’t all wonky & akward, like most horror games. If I’m having a hard time adjusting 2 the controls I usually get frustrated & quit the game. But I like the idea of him trying 2 scare us with suspense rather than the all 2 common gore.
“inSANE” hmm, for a second there i thought it had something to do with “inFAMOUS” silly me. lol. Guillermo del Toro making a game though is very interesting to me. i love his work. especially “pan’s labyrinth”. but i’ve seen other very creative people that have been very successful in other mediums like todd mcfarlane, james cameron, and clive barker, throw their hat in the video game ring only to come up short, or fail miserably. i just hope the same fate doesn’t befall Guillermo.
