Twisted Metal Gets a Romantic Release Date

08/25/2011 Written by Josh Fernandes

Twisted Metal is almost as old as the PlayStation brand and just as iconic. You can’t make a mention of clowns or ice cream trucks without thinking of Sweet Tooth. Many gamers were looking forward to Twisted Metal releasing this fall, but a few weeks ago it was announced that the game would be delayed until 2012. Over at the PlayStation Blog, Jaffe released a special message to all the Twisted Metal fans straight from his heart.

Twisted Metal just got an official release date of February 14th, 2012. Yes, that’s Valentine’s Day. Jaffe also released a video further explaining why he delayed the game, and why he chose Valentine’s Day to release the game. As Jaffe says,

You are going to have people going out to very romantic dinners and then coming home and playing the crap out of local split-screen, and obviously we know what happens after that, because there is nothing more romantic than blowing your significant other up with a maniacal, demonic ice-cream truck.

Jaffe also announced that later this week he will be releasing a new Dollface trailer. Stick with PlayStation LifeStyle as we bring you that trailer later this week.

uhhhh isn’t Valentines Day the 14th?

Hmmm, they came up with a definite release day so quickly. I think this only serves to prove I, and many others, were right in our assumptions the game only got delayed to escape a certain massacre if released as originally planned amidst the biggest and most anticipated games of the year…

Jaffe is very outspoken and honestly if that was the reason he would have said so, he’s just trying to give us the best experience.

There are things you can’t say or aren’t allowed to say, even if you are the most outspoken guy ever. I seriously doubt Sony would just admit “hey, we don’t want the game to get slaughtered by Call of Duty/Battlefield/Batman/Assassin’s Creed/Uncharted/Skyrim, etc. etc. etc”. Polishing is nice and everything, but when you give an EXACT release day, October 4th as it was, it means you’re pretty damn near completion. Other games delayed by Sony like GT5 and recently The Last Guardian, never had a definite release date. And yes, even games with definite release dates get delayed…but not by 4 months! Probably they could make it for November, and I think Jaffe said they were aiming for October, but beyond October it was a BIG NO. If not as late as October, then next year, why? polish? hell no, Call of Duty!

    • Are you suggesting that it’s impossible for a development team to say, “Hey, I’m not happy with the schedule we’re on right now. All we need is about four more months to get this thing where we want it to be.”

      • themule says:

Not when the date is set, no. If they needed so much time to begin with they wouldn’t have set a day in the first place. I don’t deny they need time, it’s very plausible they do. I believe Jaffe in that respect. But his team doesn’t need 4 months. It’s just that they’d rather miss the holidays than launching November or early December. It fits the calendar better for Sony in February 012, it helps launch the year with a exciting exclusive. It doesn’t help anybody launching it to be slaughtered or cannibalize Sony’s other exclusives.

      • I would agree with that, however I’m suspecting that it has to do with the rating more so than anything. Twisted Metal was originally aiming for a T rating, but just recently admitted they couldn’t reach that goal and switched to M. David Jaffe himself said they were retooling a lot of things in the game to take full advantage of that. That seems like a plausible reason they need that much extra time.

Following Jaffe on twitter, he’s really upset that the game won’t be out for Thanksgiving and Christmas because he thinks a lot of people would have enjoyed doing splitscreen with family and friends during that time, which I guess is why he ended up settling on Valentines day of all days after the delay. I know a lot of games delay because of the release window, but I have a hard time believing that is the case here, though I do believe it will definitely help sales.

“Sorry babe, we can’t go out tonight… Don’t blame me, blame David Jaffe”
