Sony Launches “Only on PSN” Program, Brings PS2 Classics to the Store

10/03/2011 Written by Alex Osborn

If you purchased a PlayStation 3 within the past couple of years, chances are you don’t have a backwards compatible console, but don’t fret, for Sony is striving to do more than just offer you some of the best PS2 titles via HD collections. That’s right, they’re also brining a number of ”rare classic games” to the PlayStation Store starting tomorrow.

The titles that will be available for purchase tomorrow include God Hand, GrimGrimoire, Maximo: Ghosts to Glory, Odin Sphere and Ring of Red. This effort is all part of their new “Only on PlayStation Network” program, which is clearly an attempt by Sony to revitalize their online marketplace in light of the major network outage that lost consumers’ trust several months ago.

If you are a PlayStation Plus member, there are some added incentives for you as well.  Subscribers of this premium service will receive 20% off during the launch week for each game that launches through the “Only on PSN” program.  Not only that, but if you shell out over $60 through your PSN wallet, you’ll get $10 worth of credit to November purchases, which can be applied to anything available for purchase on the Sony Entertainment Network.

In addition to the PS2 classics, don’t forget that Eufloria, Okabu, inFAMOUS: Festival of Blood and PixelJunk Sidescroller are all launching this month, and are also part of the program.

This is AMAZING news! I’ve always wanted to play God Hand because I loved Okami and the thought of other great PS2 titles over time is awesome! I’d love to see some old Sony titles, like Primal and Extermination… and Drakan: The Ancients’ Gates needs to be released digitally, too! Long live the PSN!

  2. “God Hand, GrimGrimoire, Maximo: Ghosts to Glory, Odin Sphere and Ring of Red” Not really PS2 classics for me that list :-/ I can think of LOADS of PS2 classics better than that list. Oh well hopefully we will get better PS2 Classics on PSN soon :P

+ Dare i say it for the 11 millionth time? SONY BRING BACK PS2 PLAYBACK TO A PS3! ! ! WHY NOT? IS IT A CRIME TO DO THAT? ? ? LoL

Finally I get to play God Hand! And I don’t have to pay a hefty price either.

  7. Dark Cloud 1 or 2 or both please.

  8. Great news to all the PlayStation 2 classics.

This is a much better strategy then bringing backwards compatibility back which imo is completely irrelevant in light of the future, think about it: why strive to up production costs by re-introducing BC and then have to worry about the same thing next generation?

At least with this strategy although we may have to re-buy ps2 classics it covers us for the future ps4 so sony doesn’t have to deal with this bullish again and we don’t have to gripe an moan about not being able to play our PSX/PS2 classics.

What makes you think Sony wont do BC for PS4? BC was one of the reasons that I bought the PS3 in the first place. It brought many PS2 users over with that enticement. With them taking BC out they did reduce the cost for their newer models, yes, but the original buyers (including me) are not able to send in their broken original PS3 to get fixed anymore. You have to trade in for a slim now. So, I and others lose out functionality that we originally paid for. That is why they changed their slogan from “it can do everything” to Long Live Pay”.

You completely missed the entire point of my comment, if it’s a digital copy or on blu ray it’ll be backwards compatible without the need for emulation hardware, do you think sony will honestly ditch blu ray for the ps4 especially when the ps3 has only scratched the surface of its capabilities? remember they’ve made tons of progress with upping the space that a blu ray disc(100GB+) can provide the only thing holding the ps3 back from using such discs is the blu ray disc drive currently used in the system. That’s why sony is doing all these HD remasters and digital copies of ps2 games, think about it.

History lesson time. PS1 CD, PS2 DVD, PS3 Blu-Ray. Ps4 I’ll bet uses a different format. I also think your fooling yourself if you think PSN cross’s over to PS4. PSN is already showing its age and by the time PS4 comes around will be downright archaic. So why not re-release on the new network and make some extra cash at the consumers expense. Backwards compatibility will be available for gen1 PS4′s but afterward falls for “production costs”. In which they’ll charge you for an emulator they should give away for free. BTW that’s exactly what they are doing now. Now while this sounds like a slam at Sony they still have my vote on the next gen simply because they seem less afraid of tech than the others. Now hopefully they lose their fear of RAM. Oh Yeah. Long Live Pay.

      • You’re wrong. Blu-Ray will stay the standard. No PS3 game has been required to be 2 discs because of size. Plus bandwidth caps world wide makes Physical medium important.

      • dual layered blu-ray? quad layered blu-ray? http://www.myce.com/news/new-sharp-blu-ray-recorders-support-quad-layer-128gb-discs-32048/ , i doubt games will be bigger then 128gb discs.

      • cerebus says:

You say I’m wrong yet only use the capacity of the Blu-ray for your argument. The fact is by the time PS4 comes out Blu-ray burners will be about $100 dollars a piece and the actual media will be $.15. It is not a matter of space it is a matter of piracy. Seriously how bad would piracy have been if they decided to stick with DVD with the PS3 or CD’s for the PS2. You two are apparently clueless as to why they change their formats in the first place. You do realize how pirated the PS2 was at the end of its cycle right? So you expect Sony to release a system that can be pirated right off the bat? Who do you think they are Microsoft? Sure they over protect themselves but the PSP was a hard lesson and I’m sure they will try to avoid the inevitable pirate invasion on their systems. You need to think outside of this capacity box you have but your selves into. Plus a disc that can hold 50gigs per layer would still be better than one that only holds 25. And personally I would like to see a shift back to a solid state systen seeing how the technology is cheaper and the format can be more proprietary to the system its for. Too bad they are probably going with digital only next gen.

      • um all i said was dual layered or quad layer blu-ray discs could be a possible for ps4 , not really sure why your dragging me into this since i said NOTHING about what your ranted on. lay off the coke , crack , meth or whatever your on.

Any Timesplitters will be fine! We will likely see the whole PS2 library on the PSN one day…

      Long Live Pay

    • cerebus says:

CryTek mentioned the possibility of an HD remake. I’m betting all three on one disc. Though I am usually appalled with the whole HD remake thing. I love this series and would buy it in hopes that they do a sequel. Personally I think all these companies that are thinking of doing HD remakes should show some guts and bet on true sequels instead. I for one think Shadow of the Colossus 2 has a better ring than the HD remake.

      • cerebus says:

Oh and TimeSplitters 4 sounds so much sweeter than TimeSplitters HD remake. But what would sound the best is TimeSplitters 4 with PS3 exclusive Timesplitters 1-3 HD remake. Make it so CryTek. Make it so. BTW this was a port title so unlikely to be PSN exclusive.

      • Hell yeah. TimeSplitters is the last time I truly had fun playing an arcade shooter, and man I’d love to get that going on a network instead of just split screen.

      • i believe they have a game called last guardian , which is there next game , after shadow and ico. shadow pretty much took place in ico’s world and lg probally does as well. they don’t do sequals. but a lot of ppl missed out of ico , now they have the chance to play it while getting trophies for it.

What great news! I get to buy things from Sony again! Isn’t that great everybody Sony knows we like spending money! It’s almost as great as when Anonymous tried to get us to side with them by fucking with our credit card information.

  11. giese095 says:

well there should be plenty of content this month to spend $60 on so I’m looking forward to getting $10 back

  12. I’m still pretty pissed that Sony won’t bring B/C for PS2 games back. I had to go and order a new Dualshock 2 off of Amazon this week just because of that. I did originally own a 60GB B/C PS3, but the YLOD struck with incredible force. >.< It honestly just seems like a greedy move on Sony's part, and clearly shows that they don't have the gamer in mind with these decisions.

For unknown and hard-to-obtain games, this is great, but otherwise it's kind of a slap in the face if ya ask me.

  13. Azaria says:

I never had a PS2 really, but my mom got one a few years back that didn’t last long, it was a slim model. I had Britney’s Dance Beat and Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life Special Edition. Otherwise, I didn’t play too man games, so would love some of these “classics”.

    • Hey man, I don’t know what your preferences are when it comes to games, but snagging a cheap PS2, along with Burnout 3, SSX3, Metal Gear Solid 2, and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater will downright make you a happier person. :) (Not to mention the SLEW of other great titles on the console) The PS2 was probably as close to a perfect gaming console as one could get. ;)

  14. a 50 dollar PSN card costs me 42 dollars thanks to my employee discounts. I get a total of 15 percent. i’m a PS Plus subscriber so that’s another 20 percent off. I get 10 dollars credit which we will estimate to being like 15 percent off.

that’s essentially 50 percent off for me. Add to that the fact I’m not getting charged sales tax? It’s a done deal.

  15. cerebus says:

Ok let me get this straight. Spend $50 dollars this month on the “only on PSN” titles and get $10 next month. I take it they are going to make a separate section for all the titles that fit in this category? Are they going to include the PS1 classics? They are PSN exclusive. Is there going to be somekind of trade in or proof of purchase for those who still own the PS2 versions of these titles? Oh yeah of course not. Is it only going to be these PS2 classics that qualify for this deal? Off topic question. Why not do a HD version of Chrono Trigger instead of a PS1 classic? It technically was never a PS1 classic. Don’t even remember if they did a PS1 port. I do remember Chrono Cross but I didn’t bother because I heard it wasn’t a true sequel.

  16. OMG GTA:SANANDREAS PLZZZZZZZZZZ!!!!!!!!

  17. Oh man! they should release all ps2 games for ps3 from the PS store, but the downside, we have to wait a long time for them to make the down loadable versions, Don’t know how this works =b, if they do release all the ps2 games on PS store, i will be buying all the armored core series!!!
