Sony Computer Entertainment of America boss Jack Tretton recently spoke out on the recent report that PlayStation Vita 3G downloads will be capped at 20MB, pointing out that the cap will likely be based on their partner and how much data they decide to allow based on the plan.
If the download data cap of 20MB does in fact stick and the limit isn’t lifted in the near future, this could pose some major problems for Sony and their 3G model. With such a severe limit, the reasons for purchasing the 3G enabled model are dwindling. Plus, the fact that they’re partnering with AT&T doesn’t help the situation by any stretch of the imagination.
Tretton told the Arizona Star:
That’s probably based on the partner and the amount of data that they’re going to allow to be fed based on the plan.
A Sony rep responded after the interview, stating that Sony still has yet to officially announce whether or not there will be a data cap.
I suspect that negotiations are lively and going on and with Sony looking to take over the remaining half of their mobile division from Ericsson Mobile Phones it will have stronger leverage with any provider as to the data plan.
If Sony would limit the 3g usage to GPS and the Near Applications so that downloading games would have to be done on WiFi and they would just produce one model that would be the best option at this time. When you look at the 3g landscape and the technology creep going to “4G” and all the data plans no longer have unlimited access to phone networks it makes sense to limit usage but if the phone companies would have been forward looking in the past they could have seen the way forward without limiting the end users ability to use the network. I mean all they had to do is look at EU or Japan to see what technology would be coming. Instead they study, study, study and study their way into obscurity and now they have no leadership in the Technology of the World Wide Web.
I don’t undertand why AT&T is being so damn stingy, especially considering that partnering with Sony. But thats just my opinion.
Oops. What I meant to say was considering Sony’s helping AT&T by partnering with them, AT&T shouldn’t be putting caps on things.
That’s what they get. Sony is either trying to push the WiFi version or failed to do research on AT&T. I just hope there is a short contract or they have a built in escape clause. When will these tech companies learn that they stand to sell more product if they don’t try to dictate who we get are wireless services from. Guess Sony will just leave it to the hacker community to unlock their device for multiple service providers. It’s not like hackers need an excuse but why hand them one on a silver platter.
make a 4G LTE version
blablabla, Sony needs to make deals…
