“We’d Require a Next Generation Console” to do Something Bigger Than Battlefield 3, Says DICE

10/10/2011 Written by Josh Lewis

Rage and Battlefield 3 are what many consider to be some of the best looking console games of this generation, with both titles containing a high-resolution texture install (optional for BF3). DICE producer Patrick Liu believes that these two titles represent the visual pinnacle of what is possible on current generation hardware.

Speaking in regards to graphic fidelity, Liu told Nowgamer:

Both Battlefield 3 and Rage are pushing console hardware as much as developers can now, and I don’t think anyone will make something better with this generation of consoles. If we were to do something bigger – which we can – then we would require a next generation console.

Liu also stated what he would like to see in new hardware:

Always processing power. One bottleneck that we always encounter – both on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 – is memory. If we had double the amount of memory, it would be great. We could do so much more. So I think more memory would give us more bang for our buck.

The general consensus is that people seem to have been left unimpressed with the visuals seen in the multiplayer beta for Battlefield 3, if feedback from internet message boards is to be taken into consideration. However, DICE has gone on the record stating that the Battlefield 3 beta is an unfinished product, and isn’t an accurate representation of the final game quality.

  1. I’m not judging till I play the full game. But being 5 years later, it’s bout time some developers say they are getting to the limit. Especially those who are working on multiplatform games because they are limited by the lowest factors of each system. New gen = Higher specs = Lower specs are higher = Better multiplatform games.

Truth is, there is nothing like next generation hardware. History shows that new hardware is never enough for many third-party developers, which pretty much proves that current hardware is never optimized to the fullest — except by first-party devs.

And I agree with @smthomas66, coding courses from Naughty Dog or Guerrilla should be mandatory to all devs willing to work on the PS3 architecture.

Why? Because it’s easier than doing thing right with this generations consoles…

    PS4 has you covered DICE

Yea, I still dont understand why there was such a shortage for memory on the PS3 it stood out as a bottle neck right from the start. It must have been just too expensive, but why they didnt allow for expansion or future proofing in that respect is pretty strange to me. Does anyone know what the deal really was?

  5. smthomas66 says:

Sony should demand that developers take informational sessions from Naughty Dog until they are ready to make a PS4.

Naughty Dog and Guerrilla Games should both be teaching how to code for the ps3. No body does it better than either of them. Hell, they could probably up the ante if they collaborated with each other and make statements like this a thing of the past/fool hardy developers.

I bet we will still see a few games that look better than Rage and BF3 before this generation is over. Computer engineers can always find a more efficient way to use processing power and memory…it’s just that a lot of times they don’t have to because when it comes to PC’s they just upgrade to the next best thing. It’s been happening this entire generation already with developers saying they have “maxed out” the PS3, then 6 months later a developer finds a more efficient way to use processing power and memory and they say they have something better and have pushed it to its limits. Of course there is a bottleneck, you can only push tech so far, but I think there is still a little more to get out of these systems and when we actually reach the end the next generation will be ready for release.

Third-party programmers always max out hardware specs before being forced to look for newer, better ways to implement code.

in the past it was always better compression methods. But with the differences in the two current Gen consoles growing more and more, compression is not gonna cut it. Considering first party devs are reaching serious graphical highs and game depth, maybe its time third parties start to consider making the games individually instead of just copy pasting from one console to the next.

I wonder if this guys know that the Uncharted series exists because from what I’ve seen Uncharted 3 is going to beat them all both in looks and game play.

Here is a said “internet message boards” and I say loud and clear that I loved the graphics.
