Nolan North Weighs In On Who Should Play As Nathan Drake in Uncharted Film

10/25/2011 Written by Jonathan Leack

It’s been known for a while now that the Uncharted series is destined to land on the big screen in the near future, but little else has been revealed – including who will play the top role. Opinions have sparked all over the internet over who should play as the protagonist, Nathan Drake, and it seems just about everyone has their own favorite pick. But what does the man who has played the character’s part over three PlayStation 3 releases think?

Nolan North, the popular voice actor for Nathan Drake in the Uncharted game series, was asked by The Telegraph who he would like to play the role of Nathan in the inevitable Uncharted film. He replied:

It’s very frustrating for any actor to have someone who’s a celebrity take over your place. Like the Uncharted film, they’re trying to find someone to play Nathan Drake. And it’s like, why do they not think of us? We DO this.

He continued:

And you know, it’s not like I’m the pilot who landed the plane in the Hudson River and saved people’s lives and now you’re going to do a movie about it. He’s a pilot. I’m an actor, what actor would I like to play me? Uh, I don’t know! Please just stop!

Not only has Nolan North done the voice acting for Nathan Drake over three releases on the PlayStation 3, and an upcoming game on the Vita, but he nearly looks and acts identically to him as well. Oh, and he’s also been responsible for the motion capturing involved for each cutscene, meaning his movements have been translated into the games we’ve come to enjoy as well. So Nolan has a good point, why can’t he be the actor? Unfortunately, his response indicates a grim future for that, but until filming has begun, it isn’t impossible.

Share your support for Nolan North in the comments below, and maybe he’ll finally be chosen for the lead role of the Uncharted film.

I never thought about him playing Nathan Drake. I was with most fans in supporting Nathan Fillion, he looks and acts a lot like Nathan Drake in the show Castle. I wouldn’t mind Nolan North playing Drake at all, it’s better than Mark Wahlberg and Uncharted fans love Nolan already.

  2. I WANT for Nolan North to play as Nathan Drake. Fact: At the Uncharted 3 AMC Play It First Event, the Naughty Dogs staff said that Mr. North should be the one to play that role.

No one else has the shoes big enough to fill what Mr. North has initiated. I demand for Nolan North to be the one.

I’ve said this before and i’ll say it again, F**K live action, toss this obsession out the window of wanting to see flesh and blood actors do this. Remember how amazing Final Fantasy Spirits Within and Advent Children looked?
Play it safe and do CGI, it is the voice actors of this game that make the characters and no one else will be able to pull it off like the crew they have for the game, like what’s wrong with the visuals of the game right now? is uncharted 3 not getting critical acclaim for being “cinematic” right now? Use that same technology to make a feature film, live action adaptations of games flop harder than marlins in a low rider and I don’t want to see that happen to Uncharted.

by doing a CGI movie they severely limit their audience, mostly to current fans of the series and a few others who may be curious. With live action they get a chance to show off the Uncharted series to the broad audience of anyone who loves an action movie.

It could still reel people in just as much as a live action movie the problem with most cgi movies is they’re either children based or have stories that can’t be appreciated by a mass audience like FF SW & AC which are only really popular amongst gamers I think just as Uncharted has changed the landscape of gaming it can do the same for reeling in a more mature audience with a cgi flick. I honestly don’t see how a live action movie could be done without turning out bad or off, even if they got drake right with even noland north portraying him there’s still every other character that is associated with drake and if one actor/actress can’t pull their weight it will ruin the formula which is why imo they should do cgi and that way everyone from the game can portray their character and everything will work out. We’ll have to wait to see if they get it right with a live action movie if they go through with it but the track record for live action game to movie adaptations isn’t good.

Shartlo Copley from District 9 was a nobody and he was brilliant. He made the movie.

  4. Jimmy Fallon

    Robert DeNiro
    or
    Morgan Freeman

  5. I’ve always thought that. Unless he was a bald guy who’s out of shape (which he’s not), why can’t it be him? He’s already got the part!!! HE IS THE CHARACTER!!!!!! And I’m sure he’s probably less costly than Mark Wahlberg or whoever they’re considering.

  6. Nolan North should do it!

And to tell you the truth, I’ve always hated that picture that’s used in this article… Drake is honestly holding his entire body weight with his fingertips…

He probably lifts 150 pounds with his fingertips every day…

let’s face it the regular joe is not going to see the uncharted movie with nolan north as drake he is practically unknown outside of voice over work……as much as i would like for Nolan to play drake, it won’t happen

  8. briandead says:

It’s a no brainer. The cast of Uncharted should be used. They are ALL actors. And also…hearing a different voice for Nathan Drake would be painful.

I’ve posted a comment before in Playstation Blog when they posted a video of the voice actors of Chloe and Elena being interviewed way back when Uncharted 2 was near of release date. I’ll post it here again: Let the original voice actors of Emily (Elena), Claudia (Chloe), Richard (Sully), and ffs, Nolan (Drake, duh) to be the actors of a live-action Uncharted film. I’m pretty sure it would be as epic as the video game series.

  10. Keep the videogames away from the movie. If you want the movie to be like the game then play the game, it’s a movie in itself. I’m with Sony Pictures on this one, they want mass success and not Uncharted 4. Sony would never use Nolan North for one reason, if he stinks it up on the big screen and everyone knows it’s the same voices as the game, than the quality of the games to non gamers seem quite bad dont you think. My example of this would Dragonball Evolution, not the same actors but the quality of the series were hit kinda hard, thank god no one saw it and the series was already over.

    My lead actors
Nathan Fillion, Jensen Ackles, Michael Weatherly

You saw the uproar when they wanted to replace Cole in Infamous both. voice and appearance. Dangerous territory. I hope they use Nolan for the movie, then he wont be used in ever single videogame voice on earth for awhile. I hate playing a game and you have to listen to Nathan Drake in it and its completely different game in a whole different world .. Especially like DarkVoid and Prince of Persia… I can go on and on.

  12. smthomas66 says:

If it’s true that the technology of the PS4 is already out there for developers to begin making games for it and it’s truly something to behold then why not just make a cinematic movie of Uncharted showcasing the new specs and what they can bring to the table of gaming? You have the movie come out a month after the PS4 is announced and tell everyone to go check out the movie to see for themselves what this system can do. It’s a risk because it better be great but that’s what business is all about.

  13. jesterking says:

I’ve always thought Nolan North should play as Drake. It just wouldn’t be the same without his witty comments and his voice. I wouldn’t consider the character to be Nathan Drake without Nolan.

  14. Jeevz says:

Great idea! I have nothing snarky to say, he’s Nathan f’n Drake!

  15. I could support North playing Drake, it makes perfect sense. I’ve always felt that when/if a God of War movie came to fruition, it would be awesome if they found a way to make T.C. Carson work as Kratos (you have to paint the guy ghost-white anyway, why does his natural skin color matter?), and North as Drake is much more feasible.

But the reason it’ll never happen is simple: star power. Despite him being pretty well-known among gamers, Nolan North doesn’t have the general recognition that someone like Mark Walhberg, or even Nathan Fillion, has. You really think Jake Ghyelenhal(sp) was cast in Prince of Persia because he gave the best audition or because he looked the part? Hell no, it’s because having his name in the trailer would get people in the theatres.

  16. i’ve been saying this all along anyways , he is drake , the movments , the look , the voice , everything about drake is nolan . so why have some one else play drake , when the person who is drake play it? even in the playstation commerical nolan played as drake. the whole point of uncharted is a guy who isn’t your typical action star , the every day type of guy. putting some action star in uncharted makes it indiana jones not uncharted.
