Killzone 3 Multiplayer May Be Sold Separately on PSN

11/23/2011 Written by Sebastian Moss

With Killzone 3 having released back in February, the number of multiplayer users has naturally dropped to a smaller, more dedicated group of players. In an effort to revitalize the multiplayer component of the game, and bring in a few more sales, it now looks like Sony are planning to release KZ3‘s multiplayer as a separate game on the PlayStation Network.

Over on the European PS Blog, a post detailing tomorrow’s PSN store update included the following:

  • Killzone 3 Multi-play – 50% off for PLUS for 1 week (until 30/11/11)

Eagle-eyed readers spotted the game, and immediately questioned what exactly Killzone 3 Multi-play is. Andy Stewart, from the PlayStation Store Team, replied to one comment, saying:

This was an error on the schedule, sorry for the confusion.

Interestingly, Andy doesn’t deny the existence of the game, or claim he mistyped, and simply admits that the inclusion of the title on the post was due to a scheduling mistake. This seems to suggest that the game will be coming at a later date, so all that’s left to ponder is what Killzone 3 Multi-play entails. The most obvious guess is that Killzone 3‘s multiplayer will be sold as a separate game (hopefully also including DLC), but Sony could always be planning something else.

Would you like to purchase KZ3‘s multiplayer on the PSN? Let us on the comments below.

  1. KZ3 was a disappointment after KZ2 in my opinion. I’m glad it was able to appeal to a wider audience and bring more fans to a great series, and the game is kinda fun to go and play occasionally; But KZ2 is a far superior game in almost every way.

Mind if I ask what are you disappointing about in the game? I heard this several times but no one explains why. I own both games and I can say KZ3 is a better game. There’s only two things I don’t like about KZ3. One is no custom soundtrack and the other is lack of support for Operations. Yeah I know it didn’t sold better than KZ2 since Sony didn’t advertised it as the second coming of Christ.

      • I prefer KZ2 over KZ3 any day. Custom soundtrack is one reason why, but it’s a small reason. Other reasons for me are maps. KZ3 has some good maps, but KZ2 has some of my favorite multiplayer maps of all time and some are DLC. I’m not sure what the name is, but there’s one where a nuke (or something) goes off every now and then and kills everyone that’s not inside or behind cover. The layout of the maps are great. Radec Academy is amazing. Another DLC map that is incredible is on an ISA ship. — One of the major complaints from KZ2 is one of the major reasons I like it more than KZ3: the feel of it. Some said it was “laggy” or “clunky” or “heavy.” That’s the whole point. It feels more realistic than anything I’ve played because of that. I don’t want to be able to turn 180 degrees with a huge LMG in hand like you can in Call of Duty. It’s a weighty feel and is one huge thing that made KZ2 unique. Some people complained about the controls, but I think they meant the feel because the controller layout can be changed. — Another thing is the color. It was gray and brown mostly except the bright blue and orange-red glows of ISA and Helghast troops. It felt like a war. Depressing environment. Switch to KZ3 and, while beautiful, COLORS EVERYWHERE. I felt like I was fighting in a box of Crayons. Some prefer it that way, I don’t. KZ2 could have used a bit more color, but nothing so overwhelming as KZ3.
Multiplayer. KZ3 feels like some guns and classes are over powered / grant unfair benefits as compared to other classes. Shotguns are in my opinion. TWO HUGE THINGS that ruined KZ3 for me compared to KZ2: Faction balancing. It is terrible / non-existent. They’ve shown great patch support but have left that out every time. I cannot tell you how many games I’ve been in where it has been 2 vs. 6 or 3 vs. 6 or any unfair combination you can think of. Match ends and we win, but then I see it’s because we were fighting 3 people. Match ends and we lose because it’s me and another guy. That is gamebreaking for me. KZ2 never had that problem. Second thing is server list. I loved that so much about KZ2. you can see how many people are playing, which maps, which classes are enabled or not, etc, etc. With KZ3 it’s just a fart in the wind. You only know what mode you’re playing, nothing else.
If they want me to buy KZ4, they’re going to have to balance out teams and bring back the server list.
Those are my reasons. And to clarify, I don’t hate KZ3. Operations mode is a blast to play (provided you have two equal teams). KZ3 = good. KZ2 = Amazing.

TL;DR — KZ2 has superior gameplay feel, custom soundtrack, feels more like a war, has faction balancing, classes that don’t allow one player to dominate, and server list.

        @Death_Shadow

Thanks for your input, I can agree with some of your reasons. That nuclear base is one of my favorite map pack of KZ2, I also like the one where I think your on a cargo train. At the end of the day both are great games that every PS3 owner should play.

      • @bebojet — Of course. How could I forget Wasteland Bullet? Great level and as you said, both great games.

    • I liked KZ3 better than KZ2;)

      + i only wish KZ3 had 4 player split-screen with Bots :(

Maybe its a Killzone 1 HD remake

I already have KZ3 and all available DLC. I admit I hasn’t played the game since BF3 released. Map pack for Operations will definitely get me back into playing KZ3.

I just did serious damage playing BF3 and UC3 like crazy the past weeks. I love both games and what they bring to the shooting genre. Both are very different but appetizing nonetheless. This got me to thinking last night about putting both games on hold and revisiting the other great games I have not played in a while. One of which is Killzone 3. Their single player was epic, the multiplayer is amazing. After playing BF3 like crazy though I have a feeling the limited weapon selection/customization in KZ3 may feel a little awkward. Here’s to taking a break from UC3 and BF3 to focus on KZ3! Who’s with me?

I like the idea though that developers may consider selling their games bundled or separate as single player or multi player on PSN though. Their campaign was amazing, but it seems everyone loves multiplayer and sticks with that way longer than replaying campaigns. Games have to get less expensive in the future though. There’s too many games, too many consoles, bring the costs down and your games will be bought. Consider digital because your costs are less than publishing a physical copy. It’s the future, utilize it. Still keep discs as an option obviously for those who want them or need them.

One thing I do not like about discs though is it’s a physical item that cost me a lot of dough. I feel like I have to be playing those disc games all the time to get my monies worth. It stalls me from playing the PSN downloaded games. I find myself just getting time in to play the blockbusters on disc. I do not like this! Anyone else feel the same way? Offer everything digital and charge less. Problem solved. For those of you with small hard drives or slow internet, stick with the discs obviously.

I just wish they would have done more with the multiplayer. They put an awesome new mode in it, then never updated it or gave any DLC for it.

  5. I will pre-order this as soon as possible.

I’ve been dreaming for this kind of system. I hate to look for a disc and then put it in the tray just for a few minutes of online gameplay.

I hope Sony will sell Resistance 3, Uncharted3 and Modern Warfare 3 multiplayer modes

i wish it comes with the DLC like a bundle

  7. EcHo says:

Now if only Devs would offer this at release, the option to purchase either SP or Multiplayer regarding titles that offer/consist of both!!!!
To bad though after trying the beta I would actually only purchase the SP portion of KZ3 :)
Maybe in the future, next Gen wink wink, Digital will play a bigger role. Digital also allows Publishers to take an agrresive stance on used sales, by either making titles Digital only, or offering SP/MP digital version at lower price points. For example KZ3 is 15$ used, why not this late in its life offer the whole game digitally for 15$. You sure would stop eb/BB anyone else from even bothering to purchase used copies off of people and trying to resell them…

  8. Death_Shadow KZ3 does have custom soundtrack.

  9. the concept is genius!!!!

if they do this with U3 and many others it will make a bunch of money and i will be extremely pleased

  10. it is an interesting concept. but i must admit that i’m a bit skeptical, i hope we never see the day where we end up paying MORE money in the long run to get the complete experience from a game (SP & MP). if they split the price down the middle then fine. but if they make the prices exceed that of games that we pay for now, it will only be bad for the gamers out there that like both SP and MP. cause we all know that companies are in it for the $$. and finally, way down the road here…we may eventually see the death of single player games as a mainstream form of revenue in the industry as a whole because there is plenty of $$ to be made in online gaming in terms of DLC like map packs and customisation options and competitive gaming.

  11. Maybe this will give me a chance to finally get all of the trophies for KZ3.
