Sony Confirms Vita Won’t Support PS1, Turbo Grafx Games at Launch

11/28/2011 Written by Tony Wibowo

A few weeks ago, Famitsu released a PS Vita FAQ containing information regarding the successor to the PSP. Buried inside the FAQ was info about “Game Archives” support by the system, with the FAQ mentioning that the system might not support it at launch. Today, Sony has confirmed that the Vita will indeed not support “Game Archives” at launch.

Sony updated the Vita’s official website with the following:

Can [the] Vita play PlayStation Game Archives games?

It won’t be supported at the time of the PS Vita launch. Regarding future support, we’ll share details later.

“Game Archives” covers the original PlayStation and PC Engine/Turbo Grafx games that can be downloaded through the PSN store. That means that those games can only be played on a PSP or a PS3 for now. Hopefully, Sony will update the Vita to support “Game Archives” at some point in the future.

Do you guys really care about Vita’s inability to play old PS1 and PC Engine/Turbo Grafx games? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

  1. I’m sure the ability to play PS1 games will come along eventually. It is a small bummer when I consider that I use my PSP to play a lot of PSOne games

But hey, oh well, I still HAVE my PSP so I can still jam when I need to.

I’m…pretty sure I’ll be OK without Turbografx.

  2. Now I wonder if this means it won’t be supported out the door for the Japanese release, or American, or both. If it’s just Japanese it should realistically come out in the 3 months it takes the system to release stateside. If Americans have to wait a while longer after it comes out for us, it might draw a few problems. I’m not sure if I care just yet, as right now my PSP is used solely for PS1 games, but time will tell how this turns out.

Not concerned at all. I hate going back to PS1 games. They look so bad. However that massive catalogue of ps2 games is a whole other story…

  4. I don’t think the question is whether PS1 and other “Archives” games will ever be supported so much as it’s whether Sony is going to require consumers to pony up MORE cash to buy the same titles they already own on PSN all over again. Remember, this is a giant corporation we’re dealing with, and we all know what corporations are in business to do.

It’s funny. For the first little while after E3, everything you read about the Vita was about what it can do. Now everything you read is about what it can’t do. I’m sure this will be added and I’m sure the Vita will be a great device. I just think it’s funny that everything was praise at first and now everything is about its limitations.

  6. I’m hoping they will add it, the more games playable on the device the better, I’m surprised Sony didn’t make sure it could play them from the beginning with the whole Playstation Suite thing going on and other devices that use that able to play PSX games.

I would never go back to a PS1 game personally but for those that want the feature I’m curious why it’s not possible. I mean this device can stream data directly from your PS3 remotely from what I’ve read and it should also be able to select and stream anything you have on your hard drive as well whether it be a brand new PS3 game, PS1 title, or a movie you downloaded in their store. How is it doing it from a disc you have sitting in the PS3 but not the data on your hard drive?

Not an issue…what is still an issue is the fact that they are going to require people who had the original PSP and a bunch of UMDs to pay again in order to change their games into digital versions. I don’t have any UMDs, but I’m mad for those that do. Sony needs to change their business plan around supporting their older games.

  9. ZalAamir says:

are they trying to further push Playstation Suite or something?
i dont see why PSX support cant be immediately available…it’s like the PSP all over again ._.

so when the Vita launches(which would be around Christmas, here in South East Asia) those of us with PS+ cant use ANY content on the vita!

oh wait, forgot about the MINIs…we CAN use those on the Vita, right….?

  10. Toxia says:

was looking forward to playing chrono cross and the resident evils and final fantasy’s on this. its a bummer

  11. UTWarden says:

not an issue, what I want, remote play, psp support, and a catalogue for it!

  12. urbz1988 says:

Either sumone will hack it or sony will make you pay for it in the long run.

  13. Kaminari says:

How many PC Engine games have been released on PSN US so far? 10?

Even the Japanese store has stopped being upgraded with new downloads, after Konami closing down Hudson Soft.

  14. I’m sure through remote play you can do it…..
