The Most Played Game in 2011 is….Skyrim!

12/09/2011 Written by Tony Wibowo

Even though The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was only released one month ago, it is already the most played game in the entire year of 2011. It beat the likes of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Battlefield 3 and Fifa 12. The study that determined Skyrim‘s success was done by Raptr, a stat-tracking service.

Raptr tracks the activities of each game to formulate data that would be used to “award” games at the end of the year. The company tracks activities such as individual and total playtime. Raptr’s fully detailed report can be seen here.

The winners of the “most played games” are the following:

  • Most Played Shooter: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
  • Most Played RPG : The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
  • Most Played Open-World Game: Batman: Arkham City
  • Most Played Sports Game: FIFA Soccer 12
  • Most Played Social Game: The Sims Social
  • Most Played New IP: L.A. Noire
  • Most Played Game : The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
  • Most Successful Paid to Free-to-Play Game: DC Universe Online

A special note for DC Universe Online which received an increase of 2500% in total playtime per day after it switched to free-to-play model.

    Skyrim isn’t open-world?

  2. jockhotty says:

Lies , lies. I dint even get it yet! I am going to continue punishing Bethesda’s poor Ps3Attitude for awhile longer.

  3. Timewarp says:

Yeah but nobody beats the god-damn batman Jinque not even Skyrim!

  4. themule says:

LIES. Bogus, fake piece of crap. How can a game that came out Nov. 11 be the most played of a whole year? It’s only logical the most played game AND shooter of the year is Black Ops.

    • tazinlwfl says:

      Your logic is severely flawed…

      • themule says:

severely flawed? really? let’s see, a game that sells 25 million copies across all platforms (Call of Duty Black Ops) versus a RPG that’s sold to this date barely over 4.5 million copies. On one side we have Black Ops which was top in sales since it release last year and well into the middle of the current year, 11 months of people playing, many of them non-stop, especially 360 owners who had nothing else to play on their sorry console all year (LOL). But yeah, obviously Skyrim beat that in less than one month ’cause each and every one of those copies sold (4.5 million) translate to 300 hours of play. You don’t have to be a genius to see the logic, sorry I had to explain to you like you’re a COD player.

      • Timewarp says:

On the one hand I too don’t get how a game like MW3 that clearly got millions more sales then Skyrim was not the most played game this year. It seems like it would be although I really cannot be bothered to do the maths.

But I’m going out on a limb and I’m gonna say if this is a lie then it’s most pointless lie of all time. I mean really Themule? No offence but they faked the stats that tell us what the most played game is? What would be the point in that? What is someone who wants to play Call Of Duty going to read this and think “You know I wanted to play this first person shooter based around the multiplayer but this article told me the completly differant medieval free roam game is being played more, clearly I’ll enjoy that more”

If you’ve got your mind set on COD then Skyrim it’s likely Skyrim is the opposite of what you were after and it’d have no effect. Also like I said I’m not good at maths but I’m almost certain MW3 hasn’t been out for 11 months. Seriously like I said, I can see the point your trying to make but I don’t think anyone believes they can fake stats like these to effect sales or at that ANYTHING (except possibly the smugness of hardcore oblivion fanboys)

    • giese095 says:

think of all the die hard RPG fans who would never play a shooter but have probably already logged in over 100 hours in Skyrim…I’ve probably already played Skyrim more than any other game this year and I’ve only put in 30 or so hours.

      • themule says:

ok, simple math : 25 million players playing an average of 15 hours you’d say? you think that would be a fairly LOW average for a multiplayer FPS right? well, let’s say it’s THAT LOW. 15 hours on average per person. 15 x 25 million = 375 million hours. Not too shabby huh?

Now what’s a reasonable average for Skirim? 60 hours? We’re talking about averages here, it’s not like each and every copy of Skyrim has seen (in less than 1 month) over 60 hours of play. You know what. Let’s say on average 4.5 million Skyrim players have played 70 hours. Outrageous, it’s a freaking high average for just 1 month. 4.5 x 70= 315 million hours.

Yeah, my logic is flawed. And I’m counting most COD players played an average 15 hours in 11 months, YEAH Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.

      • giese095 says:

i think you’re overestimating the audience who plays COD. 20 million of those sales are probably people like some I know who bought the game because it is the “cool game to have” and only put in 5 hours of gaming in an entire year. Now fortunately enough for myself I don’t care enough to bother doing any math to figure out how these stats could work out, but I do have to wonder why you think this outside company would bother releasing fake data…

    • If you have played Skyrim then you would know why this is true. I had over 100hrs in the first 2 weeks and that’s not much compared to the die hard RPG fans

      • themule says:

yeah, but still 4.5 million 1 month won’t play more than 25 million in 11 months…sure you can see that, if not , (shrugs) .

    • technically you are probably right…but i would imagine they take into account the release dates and come up with ratios of the year (since release date) it has been played…the game with the highest ratio or percentage of the year played (since release date) would be the most played…they probably do it that way since its the only way to put everything on a semi-even playing field

  5. themule says:

Also, how can MW3 be the most played shooter of ALL year? complete nonsense.

    • daredwolf says:

Ok, just want to clear things up right now, Skyrim beat Black Ops because they probably only take games into account that released THIS YEAR. It wouldnt be fair to compare Black Ops to Skyrim because it had a huge head start on release compared to Skyrim. Thats why Skyrim is the most played game of the year. Black Ops came out in 2010, so it probably wasnt even in their survey.

  6. Crueltea says:

Most Played Game : The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Most Played Open-World Game: Batman: Arkham City
    Skyrim = Most Played Game
Arkham City = Most Played Open-World Game
    Skyrim ≠ Open-World Game
    wat

  7. claass21 says:

After briefly skimming through their report, they are basing this on something similar to the total number of hours logged in the first month of the game’s release and then just comparing on those numbers.

They also excluded all PS3 and Wii exclusives.

IMO this ‘report’ has no credibility whatsoever.

  8. Pffff Taking into consideration the fact a good many people will have to start a new save because of running into a game progression bug like the run I just ran into this isn’t hard to believe.
