Best Role-Playing Game 2011

12/22/2011 Written by Anthony Severino

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Publisher: Bethesda Softworks

Developer: Bethesda Game Studios

Every day of our lives, we wake up and we’re told what to do. By our families, our jobs, our governments – we are all expected to live a certain way. In The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, you can do whatever you want when you want to from the second you turn the game on. You choose the type of character you want to be and then forge your own path. There’s a main storyline you can follow, but you can just as easily spend 200+ hours in the game without making even a single kill. (where’s the fun in that, though?)

No two playthroughs are ever the same. This type of freedom is rare. Playing a game without confines is liberating and helps to immerse you in the closest thing to a living, breathing world you can find outside of reality. This among so many other reasons is why Skyrim is the Best RPG of 2011.

Runners Up:

  • Deus Ex: Human Revolution
  • Catherine
  • Dark Souls
  • Dragon Age II

wait for it, do you hear them coming??? All the people who will complain about this choice because of the bugs and glitches??? I don’t care about those people either, good choice.

    • Brace yourself…HERE….THEY….COME!!! Oh wait, what’s that?
      …..
Oh, they all took arrows to the knee.

      Thank God for archers!! :-D

    • While I have no issue with this decision because when the game is working right an in the luck chance you don’t run into a game ruining issue an have to start over it is the most fun an enjoyable rpg this year but I do find it a bit unprofessional to mock an make fun of people who run into these problems. Just saying.

      • I replied to your email BTW. But I want to comment here too. My comment wasn’t meant to be offensive and wasn’t really directed at Skyrim users upset about the issues with the PS3 version.

My comment was more a jab at the situation that reared its ugly head in the Best Shooter 2011 award.

I didn’t mean to be insensitive. I know people are genuienly upset, and I wouldn’t mock that.

      • Yeah I saw that lol I would be on edge if I had to deal with that too man.

I can agree to this list, becaue there really were,t that great games this year. the only thing I think about is: does this list only consider when the games were released on Ps3, OR first time release? because if we only count Ps3 releases then Mass effect 2, and then Where is Trinity Souls of zill o’ll?? but, it’s just my opinion :D but next year better be a JRPG topped list ;) or at least thatæs what i hope for :P

No surprise here. I had a lot of fun with this game. The longest I have ever played one game on my PS3 (or any system for that matter). It is a pity I can’t play it due to the constant freezing.

I also agree with this list… I’ve walked for hours in this epic adventure and haven’t scratched the surface of this game as yet… and I’m enjoying every minute of it.

    Big issues with everything

    1) Skyrim is a broken game, where in 20 hours you can 1 hit kill everything. The story is bland, the combat embarrassingly bad

Deus Ex: Human Revolution – Worthy choice
    Catherine – NOT AN RPG
Dark Souls – Bleh, if youve played all the kingsfield games youve played this one
Dragon Age II – Beyond terrible

From the looks of this it seems like the author doesnt know too much about rpgs.

This year had a ton to choose from pokemon black white, radiant historia, legend of heroes, dragon quest vi, disgaea 4 and more

    I mean CATHERINE!!?!?!?!?!??

  7. Good choice. A lot of my friends have nothing but praise for this title. My favorite this year is Deus Ex, but I’m sure that once I try this game it’ll become my new favorite RPG.
