Vita Sales Lag Behind 3DS, PSP, Wii and PS3 During Second Week

Demand for the PS Vita may be slowing in Japan if the latest sales numbers from Media Create are any indication. During its first full week of availability, the PlayStation Vita moved just 72,479 units. This is a stark contrast to the previous week’s numbers of 324,000+ units, and far less than the 482,200 units Nintendo’s 3DS sold this week. The original PlayStation Portable, released in 2004, sold more than the Vita with 101,000 units moved this week.

Sony has two handhelds selling neck and neck, that’s not so bad right? But with the 3DS controlling 57% of the market and the Vita managing to hold onto 8%, the figures aren’t very promising. Meanwhile, the Wii sold 91,176 units and the PS3 sold 75,943 copies.

No Vita games managed to crack the top 20 this week. During the first week of sales, two Vita titles were in the top ten – Hot Shots Golf 6 held number 7 and Uncharted: Golden Abyss took number 8. On the other hand, the 3DS had major titles like Mario Kart, Super Mario 3D Land and Monster Hunter Tri-G dominating the charts.
