Real Life WipEout Track Makes Augmented Reality Look Like Child’s Play

Augmented reality on the PlayStation Vita might be able to make games more immersive and realistic, but nothing can beat actual, physical, real life objects. The Japan Institute of Science and Technology has created an incredible track from SCEE’s futuristic racing series, WipEout – along with levitating, controllable vehicles. If you watch one video today, make it this one.

The video showcases the institute’s research into “controlled quantum levitation”, with the ships presumably held aloft by electromagnets, and propelled by liquid nitrogen:

Here is a short footage on our recent work on quantum levitation. We were inspired by the game Wipe’out to do our work. With this new technology, we hope to revolutionize the world of motor transport; Maybe in a near future we could assist to a real Wipe’out race.

While the video is certainly incredible, the thought of a real WipEout race in the near future is truly amazing.
