Final Fantasy VII. A mere mention of the name evokes as many great memories as it does requests to remake the game in HD. Square Enix has commented on it sparingly in the past, but this month an anonymous employee has reportedly made the potential for a future remake look grim.
During CES 2012, several anonymous Square Enix employees apparently spoke to 2D-X about the Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts series, eventually sharing some disagreement with the thousands, if not millions, of fans that want to see Sephiroth wage battle on Gaia in 1080p.
I honestly don’t believe that people truly understand Final Fantasy VII. I think if they went back and played it today, they wouldn’t appreciate it nearly as much as they did before. That might not be the case for all Final Fantasy VII fans, but I think a lot of people need to let it go and accept it for what it is.
Is Final Fantasy VII really not as great as we remember it? Sure, the wealth of discussion about it over the years has made it somewhat of a legend in the gaming community, and some argue that there were other RPGs that were even better during the 90s (i.e. Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VI). However, if Final Fantasy VII‘s sales, reputation, and multimedia collection are any indication, it’s a behemoth when compared to nearly any game in existence.
Rarely is gameplay brought into consideration, though, and that’s where Square Enix is probably right. Turn-based RPGs simply don’t fare well anymore, and their design team has been running around looking for a way to modernize JRPGs since Final Fantasy XII came out in 2006. But the combat isn’t what makes Final Fantasy VII arguably the most beloved game of all time. It’s rare to see a game with much content, such admirable characters, and a story that flows you through an unforgettable journey. If Square Enix is really struggling with how to tackle this, might I suggest Final Fantasy VII with Final Fantasy X‘s combat system? I’ve always wanted to use all of the characters available in a single fight, and that would be a great option.
So should we “let it go” or keep pushing? Given how dry JRPGs have been lately, I say we keep pushing. If anything, Square Enix is just waiting for a console that has a massive install-base to drive profitable sales. In an industry where profit is everything, it’d be a mistake for a corporate juggernaut like Square Enix to not take advantage of something with as much potential as a Final Fantasy VII remake.
I love turn based JRPG’s. I don’t need FF7 again though and I don’t need to see it in eye bleeding glory. Make something else like it but not the same exact game. Look at how great Crisis Core was, same world, same story elements, same characters. (oh, if it only was turn based)
FF7 was the only JRPG that every enjoyed. I think was just a great story. I personally enjoy Kingdom of Hearts series more.
The Kingdom Hearts series is FANTASTIC. I’m curious as to why it’s taking them so long to make 3, though. I know there are a lot of back stories and side stories (games for handhelds), but they could a least finish the main plot first…
FF VII is better than most of the crap they have been releasing lately. So I am ready to just let go of everything they are making.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, noting that 14 years ago FF7 took over my life and still holds meaning to me today: it wouldn’t be the same. If you see it remade, it may or may not ruin the game for you. Go back and play it now, then imagine that with Advent Children graphics and voices. Sounds great, but I really don’t think it would live up to the expectations all the fans. If you are going to remake anything, how about the underrated gems? Chrono Cross (or a new Chrono game!), Xenogears, Brave Fencer Musashi.
I agree with the part about the gameplay. I played FFVII for the first time two years ago on the PSP, and I think it includes every stereotypical flaw that is associated with old-school JRPGs.
I still think Square Enix will remake FFVII for its 50th anniversary.
They could send this game to market and charge $100 a copy and it would still sell assloads. Including a copy to me.
If they don’t want money, that’s fine. The original is still a great game. Crisis Core is cool too.
No offense to you, but honestly if you did that, you are a bit on the idiot side… While I do love the hell out of this game, beat it several times, own it on everything I own, PS1, PSP, Cellphone, PC, and still play it to this day… I would NEVER purchase this for $100 and I do not think anyone else would either. Not to mention, though this game is beloved, no doubt about it, it did not sell well, under three million copies I think, not to good in the game industry.
I think I would love to see a remake of this game, and I would probably try it out, but half of the awesomeness of FF7 to me, is the old school graphics, of the game.
You’re right, people paying what they consider to be a fair price for things they like are idiots.
Blah blah something something most popular game in the series, best (or near) best selling game in the series, most requested remake, over 10 million sold, fastest-selling game in PSN history, blah blah yadda yadda to each his own, captain
$100 is about the price you pay here in Australia, lol. Hence; I always import.
okay, continue making your lazy sequels of sequels.
Keep pushing for it. I’m about to finish up a game of Parasite Eve and after that i’m going to begin a new game of FF7. How far they have fallen.
I wonder if SE hates money…lol
Yeah, seriously. Let it go, guys. It’s not going to happen.
I think it comes down to 2 things,,,,,either they don’t have to the people to remake the game OR they don’t think it deserves to be remade espcially because they are doing the hd version for FF X.
FFVII is what started my gaming career. I didn’t begin reading gaming magazines and going to Best Buy to see what’s available until I played it. The delivery of FFVII showed me how powerful video games can be.
ff7 gets to much credit if they were to remake a ff they should do 6 or 9
well to be honest how about no more remaking games at all just make Chrono Break
“I think a lot of people need to let it go”
You create mediocre spin-off after mediocre spin-off, continue to tote it’s protagonists in games like Kingdom Hearts and Dissidia to whet the appetites of the hungry fanboys, release a PS3 tech demo featuring what fans of the series have been wanting to see for a decade, and now it’s “HURR DURR LET IT GO”?
Ever since Advent Children was announced, Square Enix keeps giving the fans of VII more… it’s just that the “more” that they’re getting isn’t what they asked for. After experiencing the entire “Compilation of FFVII”, the only thing that I would consider passable are the visuals in Advent Children and the Last Order animation. I wish I could’ve just left VII alone the way it remained in the memories of my younger self, instead of putting up with retcon after retcon on top of lore neglect and character rape.
I don’t see how FFIV can be re-released 87 times and yet a game that has significantly better gameplay can be considered archaic.
My thoughts exactly Cigarly. They are the one’s bringing the games characters back over and over again in other games, throwing that PS3 demo out to tease us, and even going as far as to make a movie about it. So now we are the ones who should “let it go”!?!? They are creating this buzz about the remake, so I think they should make good on it and do the remake. (While I am dreaming I might as well wish for a chrono trigger and chrono cross PS3 remake)
well if people only talk about your old games, then something is seriously wrong with your recent ones? for instance, I don’t see nearly as many people begging Kojima to remake Metal Gear Solid 1 or the early 8bit versions, why? because he keeps making great games for the series that are close or on the same level with the best of them. Same thing as with FF7 happened with Resident Evil, people asked for a HD remake of 4, but that was easy (especially since Capcom hardly made it HD at all, lol). However, square has proved they are not capable of recreating a world and story like the FFs of old (4,5,6,7) used to have. It’s only been downhill starting with 8, and although 8-13 have been good games, some great, some good, some great but not even “FF like” (12, 13), it’s obvious Square lost the way a long time ago and they won’t reconcile with the old fans ever again.
Square Enix just give me a ‘PS3 ONLY FF GAME’!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is all i want!!!;)
my words to Squaresoft! fuck you you pieces of shit! never getting my money again for your crappy released games.
Square Enix wants too look to the FUTURE not the past GEEZ, get it in your heads!! and a remake of FF VII would be loved and hated, some small changes would ruin it for some, and the cost to make it would be INSANE due to the scale of the game. NO games today with graphics like SE is as huge as the Ps1 games were
and isn’t the ONLY reson ppl want a remake due to thbe graphics?? OMG how SHALLOW!!!!!!! PLAY the ORIGINAL it has EVERYTHING YOU NEED FROM FF VII
Of course, that’s why they keep remaking and rereleasing the older FF titles….
A thing we need to consider is the quote from the anonymous Squuenix employer “I think if they went back and played it today, they wouldn’t appreciate it nearly as much as they did before”
If SE re-released the game, would the problems in the game overrule all the nostalgia and destroy the utopian memories we all seem to have.
Personally, I think FFX is much better all around.
i guess it’s time for a PC FF7 remake by fans just to say up yours SE
How can we let it go when you keep releasing crap games?! We will never let it go!
“I honestly don’t believe that people truly understand Final Fantasy VII. I think if they went back and played it today, they wouldn’t appreciate it nearly as much as they did before. That might not be the case for all Final Fantasy VII fans, but I think a lot of people need to let it go and accept it for what it is.”
I do accept what it is. One of, if not the best games ever made! And FYI random Square-Enix employee (probably from the enix branch) I play FFVII all the time. I play through it about once every two years.
Furthermore: “Turn-based RPGs simply don’t fare well anymore, and their design team has been running around looking for a way to modernize JRPGs since Final Fantasy XII came out in 2006.” Says who? Every game since X (I don’t consider XI a FF game) has been horrible. Why? Because of the battle system! Bring back the turn based battle systems!!!!!!!!! They have abandoned their fan base and everything that has made their games great!
Now quit your jibba jabba and make a remake of it!
seven’s story and characters are what made it so popular – popular enough for square to milk the franchise’s characters for many years AFTER the game was made. i believe the reason they have not done a remake is because there may be some legal setbacks involved. else they would have made it already instead of all the other half assed games they seem to want to churn out year after year. FF7 will ALWAYS be the KING. oh and by the way… zidane and co have never been as popular as tidus and co. i loved FFX too but seven was much better. even though they all had popeye arms syndrome back then lol
A wiser thing to do would be to release a “redux” version of FFVI or FFIV. It has a greater visual difference and combat could be replaced by a Star Ocean/Summoner-like system. It also has a lower likelihood of pissing people off by not “getting” things right.
let it go, SquareEnix isn’t going to make good games EVER.
I love Final Fantasy 7 and all but if Square Enix decides not to do a remake then I guess we all will have to let it go. Making remakes of older Final Fantasy games would make them a ton of money but I guess Square Enix doesn’t care about money or fan feedback for that matter.
Yet another thread about the most overrated game in history.
GIVE IT A REST.
I mean, please.
And enough about this remake. I know you want the game to actually look GOOD and not a bunch of crappy 3D sprites stuck together that the current game looks like.
Let it go.
Whatever most of you gigantic idiots may say. I will never let go of a ff7 remake. I will keep asking for it untill the end of time. And I to would pay 100 for that game. Why because it’s worth it. Most of you don’t understand that. Ff7 revelutionalized gaming. Yes there were a lot of flaws but what do you expect. It was a giant leap for them. And just think how much they could improve it. People didn’t love it for the graphics or battle system. They loved it for the the characters, the story line. Ff7 is not under rated for its time. Improvements can be made on a lot of things and it would be like starting from scratch but it would still be better then every other game that they have made. Deff better then x-2, xi, xii, xiii, which has been all less then horse dung.
Here my purpose….
Make me a promotion of playstation 4 chief/ceo In marketing….
Make a Remake of Final Fantasy VII with Final Fantasy VI as two separate games and as one of few launch titles for PS4 (you take this idea from me i am sueing you sony, or i be one of first people to preorder the console)
Last step…….. watch PS4 sell like cupcakes… + retire (BEST and shortest career in gaming ever)
Oh and make all development for all PS4 video games in Japan in English (since it almost like a second language over their anyway, or very least with option between Japanese /English and/or subtitles for Japanese and English, combined with region free = World Wide Larger Audience)
I see exports of video games going crazy =)
But bottom line, it most likely not happen to due lack of imagination/cost/fear of the game flopping in developing companies. (you already butchered Final Fantasy name with FFXIV/FFXIII/XIII-2 trust me you got nothing to lose, just profit and possible retribution for Final Fantasy Series if you remade VI – VIII(especially VIII disk 4… 1 giant dungeon -.- *sight*))
