Insomniac Says Resistance is Futile, Won’t Make More Games

01/26/2012 Written by Anthony Severino

Insomniac’s Resistance franchise will always have a special place in the hearts of PlayStation 3 owners, especially those who picked up their console around launch, when the only game worth playing was Resistance: Fall of Man. If you fit that bill, prepare to have your heart broken.

Insomniac CEO Ted Price told VG247 during an interview at Southern Methodist University’s Game::Business::Law Summit that they won’t be making any more Resistance games.

As a fan of the series and Insomniac, it pains me to hear this, but I do understand. Resistance 3 sold far below expectations for a third console-exclusive game in an established series, on a system that has a pretty large install base at this point. It sold even less than the original Resistance: Fall of Man, and was also the first game to introduce Sony’s PSN Pass.

Sony does own the Resistance IP, not Insomniac, and Resistance: Burning Skies is in development for the PlayStation Vita, so this certainly isn’t the end of the franchise, but it is the end of Insomniac at the series’ helm.

  1. Bummer. They were really on to something with Resistance 3…

What is really worrying is that Insomniac is going casual. “Insomniac Click division” is called. I hope this won’t become their whole business someday, it’d be such a waste.

I just don’t understand how many of PS3′s exclusive games sell so little when the games are so great.

One has to wonder if the PSN Pass had anything to do with it. A lot of people probably used R3 to protest… and of course used sales were nearly crushed.

I doubt a pass had any barring on this outcome. The majority of gamers don’t even traverse the Online game world and are still stuck in the dark ages playing FPS for their Single player.
I’d wager R2 left a bad taste with people, then come late 2011 containing an over-abundance of FPS games.

Well considering R3 had the best FPS singleplayer campaign I’ve ever played paired with a surprisingly buggy and unreasonably unbalanced multiplayer offering, I could see where those people are coming from. Nevertheless Im sure releasing in the same window as Battlefield 3 and Modern Warfare 3 didnt help their case.

  5. Good, that sounds harsh but i’d rather they stop before butchering the series even further. After 3 main games and 180$ down the drain I feel like R1 was the only good one out of the bunch and that the 2 after(especially in regards to MP) tried too damn hard to copy either halo or cod. Resistance 3 felt so right but wrong at the same time too, I liked the grittier direction and it felt like a rejuvenation that was needed but as the game progressed it was apparent that insomniac was still in the same rut an failed to remove themselves from it, the story wasn’t any different from the past iterations and no further insight was given into the origins of the chimera, who are the “pure”chimera? and the cloven? The questions return but no answer is ever given.

I really hope IF they muster up the energy to do another they go back to the drawing board, take what worked(namely the weapon wheel and weapons) and do another trilogy while answering the essential questions.

  6. My heart will only break if they don’t do anymore R&C PS3 only games :-( I want more R&C! ! ! :P (normally i would of got bored of the same sort of game again & again but the R&C games are brilliant i think) + i think Insomniac going Multi-format is going to end in disaster for them i bet.

  7. I’ve seen a lot of people saying that it’s good they stopped. One here says they were butchering the series and R1 was the only good one. I don’t see it that way. I see three games all following the same story and from game to game, they experimented with new things. Which, to me, is refreshing. There are a lot of games that keep the gameplay exactly the same. That can get boring. With Resistance, when switching between games, it seems like I’m playing a game that’s completely separate from the last, but it is still in the series.

As a fan of the series, I’m happy they decided to call it quits. Now hopefully sony will find a new developer for the franchise and we can get the resistance game we all hoped 3 would have been. It was obvious their decision to go multiplatform effected the third game. Now they can focus on that and I can forget they exist. Unless they come up with a game finally worth playing.
Yes I am mad with how resistance 3 ended up being. Lackluster is the word I’ve been using to describe it.

    • Ironically it happened to Halo too when Bungie jumped over with Activision and then shortly after EA gobbled up Insomniac and sure enough R3 did suffer for it just as I thought it would. I did like R3′s direction and thought it served as a great backdrop to building a new iconic hero of the series but after the game finished it disappointed me to be left with the same questions that i’ve had since the first game.

R3 is good, but it is the worst in the series… Their decision to completely disregard the various community features present in 2 as well as the dedicated clan system that was present in 1 and 2 really cost this game some love from the veterans of the series like me.. still play it though, but I will retire it once my k/d is 4.0 lol ..currently at 3.92! :)

R3 was absolutely the best in the series for my taste…I feel it has something to do with changing the formula each time out. People just didn’t know what to expect. So may fans of the original didn’t like R2 so Insomniac completely changed the formula for R3. This lead to fans of the original being skeptical to go back after disappointment in R2 and fans of R2 were skeptical because they were told R3 was so different than the first two games. I don’t think I have ever played through an entire franchise that changed so much between each release…we’re too used to game franchises simply making improvements on the original formula each time out that I think it made a lot of gamers uneasy.

I also think a factor was that many people on a limited budget were saving their money for BF3 and MW3…which is unfortunate because even though I own both of those as well I would always choose R3 over the other 2.

I’m actually sad to hear this despite me not being a huge fan of the Resistance franchise. I don’t know what it is, I just couldn’t really get into the Resistance games.

I could care less i lost interest in the series after the second one. They could never stay true to their selves and that’s why sales dropped. The game kept changing like they didnt know who they where. The first one was the best multiplayer game (any console gamers 1st besides HALO). They nailed th formula from gameplay map design chat system everything all they really had to do was up the graphics and tweak and add little things but the kept switching the gameplay part two was nowhere identical to the first one didnt feel anything like it and thats when sales started to drop for that game because i was so hyped for it but when i played the beta i was praying the final game wouldnt be like that. Now when 3 comes the same thing happend and their biggest mistake is they tried to be call of duty (which every game tries because they are scared to be diferent) and thats what over killed it for me how does a game go from 20 on 20 then to 30 on 30 then all the way down to 8 on 8 ? who ever made the decissions on this game single handed killed this franchise.

  13. I’ve completed them all, and all Ican say is GOOD RITHENS!
I whish the Retribution guys follow up, as their game was I’d say my most favourite, slightly higher than R1 (which I’ve completed 3 and a half times)
