PS4 Will Probably be Announced Last, Says PlayStation France CEO

01/30/2012 Written by Alex Osborn

There’s no denying that we are on the cusp of the next generation of gaming, but that fact apparently isn’t pressuring Sony into making any major hardware announcements in the near future. According to a statement from the head of PlayStation France, Philippe Cardone, Sony will likely be the last out of the gate yet again with its next console.

Speaking to LePoint.fr, Cardone expressed his confidence in the legs of the PS3, pointing out that of the three major companies, Sony is under the least amount of pressure to release something new.

It’s true that there are a lot of rumours, but I couldn’t tell you anything.

Wii is pressed for time because it’s in decline. In our case, we have a lot less pressure. We were the last to release PS3, and we will probably be the last to announce something.

While rumors have been circulating the web for some time regarding new hardware, Sony has time and time again refuted claims that a PS4 will be announced soon.

“Announced last” PS4 could be “announced last” but released fairly close to the other competitor’s product. Judging by rumoured 720 hardware I don’t think anyone would be upset if PS4 was actually released later though, only if it contains better performance. Microsoft is basically shoving a 15$ GPU into the 720…

Unless they actually do have better hardware, there is no point in releasing last. By waiting a year they will once again give ms time to build a core fanbase, lower their price, and snag a lot of dev support. We can see the effects with the vita and 3ds. When sony announced the price everyone was happy, but when nintendo lowerd their price couple with mario games it made the vita look overpriced. Same thing happened with the ps3 and xbox, if they had put in more ram with the extra year it would have done wonders but since the average consumer saw no noticable difference amd prefered the cheaper box with more games and established online community, sony lost a lot of ground.

They need to release at the same time or have more power for the year late start.

well you have to assume for the sake of backwards compatibility, which both the 720 and PS4 should have, that most of the owners of each system will remain with their current brand so really they will only be fighting over new gamers and I think that category of “new” will be much smaller this time around. I feel like this last generation brought in a lot of “new blood” due to the media capabilities of the systems and much more welcoming games for the casual gamer. These next consoles won’t have such a surge of “new blood” it will mostly just be kids getting old enough for their parents to buy them a console and a much much smaller percent of people just suddenly gaining interest in gaming….

Anyway, my point is that, in my opinion, an early start for any company won’t be quite as big of a deal this time around.

I bet that the “NEW PS4″ could be the “Original PS3″, remember that the hardware was changed to meet the percieved needs of game developers by adding an NVidia GPU/RSX to the system. That required the extra year for testing and fleshing out the game developers.

Sony could just add a second or multicore Cell Broadband that is already in use by IBM in their new super computer machines and servers. The PS4 would actually be an updated PS3 to the “Old” hardware with just a newer CPU.

And with the knowledge of how to program for the Cell Broadband now in full swing it would not be a stretch to see that the PS4 could already be in full use by the Developers right now. They could be testing the new hardware since they could be developing new IP for the console when it is released.

What I hope for is that if this is the case and the outside is not that different that they could do what Apple did when they wanted users to upgrade to PPC MAC’s, they kept the old outer cases and allowed you to purchase the new system boards for 30% the cost of the new model. Sony should look into how that worked for Apple.

GOOD. Im not nearly done with my PS3, I dont want a PS4 anytime soon. 2014-2015 would be fine with me, the PS3 still has alot of life left in it, and I want to make the most of it before I move on. I at least want to see MGS5 (NOT Revengeance, an actual sequel to MGS4) on the PS3. As for the 720 releasing earlier? Well we all saw how well that worked out for everyone who bought a 360 XD RRoD 720 anyone?

  3. bebojet says:

I’m in no rush for a new console. I have 5 games still in plastic and that’s not including the games I want in 2012.

  4. Alexandros says:

I’m glad They are not rushing it and being pressured. It gives them a lot of time to make it even better and double or even triple check it for any problems.Alot of glitches and bugs and failing games now a days are a cause of deadlines that cause the companys to rush and that totally ruins the game.

  5. Announcing their system last doesn’t mean they will be the last to come out. If MS announces something they would most likely do it at E3. I wouldn’t be surprised if Sony would skip it and announce something at TGS. There is an article on ign.com that says the new xbox won’t be out this year either, so there could be an announcement but the system wouldn’t come until next year or later. Same with the PS4. Not saying even announcing the new systems will happen this year, since Nintendo is always doing it’s own thing, and these days its MS vs. Sony in terms of a console war.

  6. halligator says:

Save the best for last. Makes sense. PS3 just getting rolling. So many games;so little time.

  7. Well Worldwide sales of the Wii are falling & Worldwide sales of the Xbox 360 last year didn’t really go up much from the year before & the only home console that is selling much more every year is the PS3:P So SONY will be in no rush to bring out the PS4. I just hope it don’t cost to much at launch really thats all;)

  8. ZombieHell says:

I’m glad Sony will be last. They should take their time, no rush

Rumor has it that Xbox 720 is suppose to be 6x more powerful. I want to see what Sony will do about this rumor

  9. The truth is Sony, at this point has nothing to worry about. The Wii U (apparently this name is subject to change according to recent news) will sell, don’t get me wrong, but it won’t sell like the Wii did. When the Wii came out the economy had not yet crashed. People were actually sitting on a surplus of money around that time. It was also the cheapest console and it appealed to the biggest market there is; casual. Those same people are now having to spend the majority of their money just to keep the lights on and food on the table. The casual market is also notorious for not doing their research. Most of that market is likely to think the Wii U is to the Wii what the PS3 slim is to the original PS3. Nintendo also made the mistake of catering to their new casual market instead of hardcore fans and the results can be seen around the web as those games have migrated to other consoles and in some cases PC. The poor sales of the PS3 in the early stages really had nothing to do with the other consoles. If you look now most people who started out with a 360 now either have both or have completely changed sides (bar the fanboys). The PS3 was slow to begin because, let’s face it, the launch titles were crap for the most part and there was a big ugly blemish on it in the shape of $599.99. Now this is something that I feel Sony has learned from. I imagine the PS4 will at most be $499.99 but I am actually guessing $399.99. These prices will of course depend on what they see from Nintendo and Microsoft in the price department. The PS4 will probably be a little more expensive than the other two consoles but not by margins of hundreds of dollars. Knowing Sony, they will likely stick with the Cell Processor and increase RAM among other things. I imagine the PS4 will be significantly more powerful than either competitor once again. The Wii U is said to boast twice the power of the 360 (bad news for Nintendo again) and the new Xbox (which I doubt will be called the 720. 360 is supposed to mean it encompasses all the major forms of media. Calling it 720 wouldn’t make much sense. Then again there is the Wii U O_o) is supposed to be six time more powerful than the 360. The PS3 will no doubt beat this (especially considering the fact that even at that percentage increase the technology is still extremely old). I expect it to be around twice the power of the new Xbox but that could just be desire rather than fact.

    • dirtysock says:

Good analysis. The only thing I have to add is that I believe the price will be higher than $399. Probably more in the $499 to $699 range depending on the hardrive and other peripherals/ games that may come coupled with it. Could be wrong though. And also something that really bugs me is that people seem to be genuinely confused about is that the ps3 is far superior to the Xbox in terms of hardware. Granted it is a bit better, but in many terms they are equals. The Xbox has faults that Sony succeeds in and the PlayStation is the same way. The ps3 hardware has been a big hurdle for developers to very slowly climb over.and games that come out in both systems generally run a bit smother in the Xbox because the hardware is much easier to program for even though the ps3 hardware is a bit better.

  10. Toxia says:

just wanted to add my name to the whole i dont want a ps4 yet list.
there is no need for a new system

  11. dirtysock says:

Releasing last will give Sony some advantages. If they release, say, 2 to 3 years after the Wii u and nextbox it would make it so that their console is directly competing with the other two over sales for at least a year or so. Most gamers won’t have to make the decision which new console they will buy because odds are they would have already bought one of the others and this allows people to go ahead and buy Sony’s as well since its been a while since they dropped a big chunk of cash on a console. It will also allow them to determine the success of the Wii u and nextbox prior to the release of their console which would greatly help with marketing to the correct audience. (Because Sony has had a very difficult time with that this generation.) It will also allow them to see what hardware and devices the other consoles have and react accordingly to how they were received by consumers. But releasing last will however also provide some serious disadvantages. With the assumed superior hardware it will cost a great deal more than the other consoles especially that they will have already hit price reductions. The other consoles will also have an established library of games as well as an online userbase. And users may not decide to switch or buy the ps4 because it doesn’t have either of this things along with the higher price tag.

If their plan is successful though this will gradually allow Sony to not be forced to release when the others do ever again. A long life cycle and not being pressured into releasing near the same time provides some serious advantages. Only time will tell if it works or not.

  12. I say its good, but not for the sake of time, but for the sake of the Vita. The PSP was released shortly before the PS3 and when it released the PSP was brushed aside. I don’t want that happeneing to the Vita.

  13. Richy2k9 says:

    hello …

what’s MS doing right now in France where the PS3 used to rule the sales says that SONY needs to strike hard & fast & early.

MS wants the Xbox to be more than just a gaming console, with kinnect it will be the set top box of each & every household, i’ve seen this hotel powered by Xbox/Kinnect & Surface, may be expensive but can get people to love it, mostly with popular TV channels added to it like Canal +

2 Years ago, the PS3 versions of most MultiPlat games had better sales over there… today when we think of SONY we also think of the PSN fiasco, even if others had their bad times too.

I’m not ready for a PS4, we don’t really need 1 right away, but sometimes it is better to show something to create the ‘buzz’ make us salivate then later release a better version than letting rumours & speculations create a hype that can later on be deceiving.

It’s about time SONY speak of what they want to give for next-gen…

    cheers!

  14. i guess the people in france never heard of xbox live accounts getting hacked on a regular basis and ms just pretends it does not happen. as for the person that said that multiplat ps3 and 360 games looking better on the 360. you need to do some more research as to why that is happening. and also take a look at the exclusive titles on both systems – the 360 can’t hold a candle to the ps3. there are a lot of LAZY devs looking for quick bucks and making half-assed 360 ports over to the ps3. there is also the issue of MS protecting their inferior tech by placing various restrictions on devs for multi-platform games. it is not the ps3 to blame. while it may require some more thinking and programming to make games – the results are amazing when compared to the 360. sony is in the sweet spot right now and they have absolutely nothing to worry about. MS and nintendo however are falling behind with their tech and formats and they NEED to revitalise their brands with new hardware. megalolz at the next 360 going blu-ray. big ol’ green must be seeing blue and must be grinding to have to use sony/lg tech to go next gen. c’mon rich2k9, you can do better than that. microspoof has been hacked many more times than Sony. for all we know the good reliable guys over at MS might have paid hackers to hurt psn and try to slow sony’s momentum, but alas you can’t keep a good thing down man. sony will announce after the rest and show them how it should be done….like a BAAAWWWSSSSS
