Insomniac may have officially moved on from the Resistance series, but that doesn’t mean they’re slowing down as a development team; quite the contrary in fact. With their new multi-platform title Overstrike on the not too distant horizon, big things are in store for Ted Price and his team.
Speaking to VG247, the Insomniac CEO discussed the team’s decision to move away from Sony-exclusive titles.
A lot of us at Insomniac believe we need to reach a broader audience. Games of the future expect their experiences to be accessible anywhere. Being on multiple platforms is a step in that direction.
With regard to whether or not console-exclusive games will soon be a thing of the past, Price went on to add:
It’s certainly possible. I mean, I can’t speak for first-party publishers. I believe that there are just more opportunities to get your IP out in front of a greater audience if you are on more platforms. So whether or not first-party exclusives continue is really up to those first-party publishers and whether or not they can find companies who are willing to restrict themselves to one platform.
However, if you look at the first-party publishers, it’s no longer about one platform. Sony has multiple platforms: PSP, Vita, PS3. And Microsoft has Xbox 360, Windows, and Windows Phone. So it used to be that, if you were working with a first-party, you really were on one console. Period. But that’s no longer the case either.
With Sony’s first-party line-up of exclusive titles being one of the PS3′s main strengths, would the PlayStation platform find itself in a sticky situation if console-exclusive titles began to fade? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
Console exclusives will NEVER die. If I could get Alan Wake on PS3 I would have never bought an Xbox360. Just like someone else wouldn’t buy a PS3 if they could’ve gotten Uncharted 3 on Xbox360. Console exclusive is a major selling point (to me at least) and Sony’s game library is unrivaled. The more Ted Price talks about going multiplat, the more he reminds me of Ninja Theory. Let’s see if their multiplat game sell more than any of their exclusive games.
“The more Ted Price talks about going multiplat, the more he reminds me of Ninja Theory”
ouch!
so right i feel bad for Ted. When he sees Overstrike doing okish he will wonder about a lot of things, like walking away from becoming a full fledged 1st party PS studio . In my opinion the PS brand is where the best environment for working in game design is at.
Everything this guys says just carries such a false sense of superiority with it. I sincerely hate this guy.
I agree with bebojet, he simply wreaks of same ninja theory failure.
you don’t even know ted price personally, so how can you hate him lol? Ted price doesn’t have to do anything for PS gamers if he chooses not to. Going multiplatform is better. You guys just don’t want people playing the 360. Fail.
People playing the 360 has nothing to do with it. The fact is that multi-platform games are not the same. With Microsoft exclusivity to have their games run for their system better as well as to have first dibs on DLC, etc. Therefore, the PS3 gets ports that have a lot of issues….
I had so much respect for the guy an Insomniac until they pulled this stunt and let me clarify exactly what they did, they released Resistance 3 as a cash grab with absolutely no long time support intended an it was obvious when R3 came out with only 16 player online an lagged horribly that they ditched dedicated because R1 & R2 ran flawlessly online with many more players so it’s obvious they ditched it in favor of p2p and sorry but I thought the ending to R3 was weak sauce too…first the humans can’t even defeat the Chimera with whole armies but yet all of a sudden some underground survivors literally change the tide overnight?
I hope Sony gives the exclusive IP’s they created to a studio that can give them the attention they deserve an hopefully we will see more games…
There are only 2 ways this could ever happen. All consoles have the exact same hardware which would be pointless because then there’s no competition. Or it’s already happening and all devs that work exclusively with one platform move to multi platform in an effort to make more money.
I can see third party exclusives disappearing but if first party exclusives died there would be nothing to make one console different from the other besides price (face it, not many people give a damn about the hardware specs of a gaming console, they just care about the games and services they offer). I don’t want consoles to become like computers where everything is an identical copy of each other apart from their physical appearance.
I think the more likely major change to the industry would be the disappearance of the console altogether like with a streaming device like OnLive. Sony and Microsoft continue to make games but they no longer have to worry about hardware sales. But considering there are still a ton of people that don’t have good enough internet service that won’t happen in the near future either.
Insomniac = Ninja Theory(Part 2) LOL;)
I will CRY tho if there are no more R&C games for the PS3 only from them
how about console exclusive (or timed) DLC from third parties Mr’ Price? That’s even worse dividing gamers who share the same game just because they have different consoles . I bet if Microsoft gave you the green you would also dance to their tune.
Remember MGS4? I’m pretty sure there are games you can only run on the PS3 and vice versa, exclusivity isn’t going anywhere and it shouldn’t.
Insomniac are being pr*cks.. they really believe that they’ve got the words.. I admired them because they made my childhood which was Spyro on the ps1.. and they now don’t seem to like Spyro neither.. it’s like the old saying “Some good people will fades away”
I will surely play Overstrike taught. but I don’t respect Insomniac anymore
The day that First Party titles fade out is the same day everyone will have the same console.
Overstrike won’t do great and I really think the sales they gain on the 360 side will be balanced out by sales lost on the PS3 side. I ain’t gonna lie Insomniac make good games but the reason I bought all their games full price on day one was because of that loyalty with Sony.
I’ve been a loyal playstation supporter for 15 years and when the PS3 released and I bought it a lot of companies who had great success with Sony during the PS1 and PS2 era abandoned ship and sort of turned there back on the gamers like me. I saw many franchises go exclusive on the other side or multiplat with Xbox exclusive Content and shit so I grew a loyalty to the companies like Insomniac who stayed with the PS3. The day they announced multi was the day my loyalty broke
Without first party titles having multiple consoles will be pointless
So he’s going casual. Good luck developing for tablets and phones. That market will be dead before you know. I said it first. It will be over soon, not because tablets or phone will be going away, but because the studios will self-destruct releasing their casual crap. It’s gonna be 1983 all over again.
I also think “casual” phone/tablet gaming will be like a fad to all these people who feel like it’s something new and revolutionary…eventually they will get bored with it and either stop playing them altogether or demand more from their games and realize that they can’t get anything more from their phones or tablets.
I think Overstrike will be a huge success for Insomniac.
First party titles set apart each system from each other as they offer different experiences and games that can only be found on that particular console. I don’ think it will ever die out but I do see third party exclusiveness ending like Team Ninja now develops on PS3 were before they only developed on Xbox 360. What Price failed to say was about exclusive DLC like what Microsoft buys that can be timed on their system before making it’s way to PS3. But than again we have seen Sony do the same with LA Noire, Red Dead Redemption, Dead Space 2, just to name a few that have add on content or bonus content only found on the PS3 versions.
