LittleBigPlanet Karting is Real, Confirmed by Sony

02/10/2012 Written by Alex Osborn

If you’ve been following the recent rumors regarding LittleBigPlanet Karting with bated breath, we’ve got some good news for you, as Sony has just confirmed that the kart racer is in fact real and currently under development.

The confirmation was made via a post on Sony’s official PlayStation Twitter account, which says:

Update: We can confirm that LittleBigPlanet Karting is in fact in development and we look forward to sharing more on the game soon!

Earlier this week, an ad featuring a number of screens teasing the game slipped through the cracks and made it onto the web before Sony’s official announcement. Considering the company’s track record with keeping secrets, this shouldn’t come as much of a surprise.

It looks like Sackboy is quickly becoming the Mario of the PlayStation brand, as the cute little creating is now appearing in both platformers and kart racers. Let’s just hope Sony doesn’t go too overboard and give us some sort of Move-centric “LittleBigPlanet Party.”

  1. Sack-Boy-Racer :D

    + Hopefully it will have a 4 player split-screen mode to :P :P :P

  2. Meh. I’m not terribly excited, but I’ll hold off on making any judgement calls before I see more.

Like I’ve said before, I’m sure it will be a great kart racing game, I’m just not sure why it is needed when ModNation Racers exists and will most likely have a sequel at some point. ModNation Racers was created to be the LBP of kart racing…Next thing they’ll announce is a ModNation platformer.

And why shouldn’t they do a platform game, it’s up to them if they want to do it or not. Media Molecule didn’t come up with Modnation so there’s no reason for them not to make a kart racing game.
Anyways I’m pretty hyped for this. I’ve been waiting for an exciting kart racing game on the PS3 and LittleBigPlanet may deliver

      • I’m hyped too especially at the possibilities we can expect MM to bring, in the same manner LBP1&2 were platformers at their core but allowed for other types of games to be built we can assume this will be the case with LBPK.

    • Competition is never a bad thing. It keeps devs on their toes to deliver us higher quality games, so we buy their stuff instead of the competition.

That said, I was never too impressed with mod nation – something about the controls / handling just never sat right with me. Maybe it’s because I never had many local plays to face off with, which is what I really like Kart games for – anyone can win, unlike me racing my friends in GT5, where only I can win. hahaha.

This is pretty cool news. I was never a big fan of Mod Nation, though its got some great features. I do like LBP and this pleases me. I know my gf will look forward to it.

WTF Sony, Modnation is great so why doing this?

  6. I don’t know why so many people are even bringing up ModNation Racers. I have never seen anyone ask why a new Resistance was coming out when Sony had already released a Killzone game. Those two games have as much in common as ModNation Racers and LittleBigPlanet. ModNation Racers was supposed to be the LittleBigPlanet of racing but it honestly didn’t deliver. It wasn’t a bad game but it doesn’t have the charm that LittleBigPlanet has. Also, I am not too sure that Media Molecule is developing this at least not fully. I would assume that they have input in it but it is being developed similar to the Vita and PSP versions. Then again I could be wrong. Either way I still hope at least the costumes from the other games are compatible.

    • Timewarp says:

Resistance and Killzone are differant enough sure their both FPS games but their storylines and core gameplay elements seem differant enough also I’ve never really thought Resistance was Insomniac’s strongest title. Modnation Racers and LBP is differant though, it just seems like you couldn’t do anything for this new LBP game to make it any differant to Modnation Racers besides Media Molecule can’t reley on Sackboy forever surely they must have know at one point in the future they’ll need to come up with a new idea. (The same actually applies to Guerrila Games)

      • That’s my whole point. Killzone and Resistance are FPS and LittleBigPlanet and ModNation Racers are part of the Play, Create, Share genre thing yet they are very different so I don’t know why people are questioning it. Nintendo actually did something very similar and had Mario and Diddy Kong racing games.

Sony should have only one 1st party Mario Kart type kart racing game and have all the PlayStation characters in it (3rd party characters are also welcomed of course) as well as only one 1st party games with all PS characters in it like Hot Shots Golf. Now, wether they name the game LittleBigPlanet “Whatever” or something else is another topic.

  8. Azaria says:

It’ll be fun to play in LBP courses! ModNation was pretty good, but honestly, I didn’t like the power-ups and didn’t like the Mod people. So, I’m all for LBP Karting! I love Kart-racing games, and being able to create courses with the tools the creative people at Mm will come up with ought to be fantastic! Let’s hope it lives up to the name! Don’t disappoint us Mm/Sony.

  9. 2 points to make.

point 1. If all the lbp1 and 2 costume are carried over to it. then you will have everything from Kratos GOW to spiderman racing in the game.

Point 2. Seeing how there is a tack costume for lbp you can already make a modnation platformer

and point 3. there will more create ability in the tracks and land area.

This will probalt blueshell MK7 and bananashroom MKWiiU

  10. Very cool I’ve always preferred LPB art style over modnation.
