Mark Rein: Unreal Engine 4 to “Shock” Gamers in 2012

02/13/2012 Written by Alex Osborn

Vice President of Epic Games, Mark Rein confirmed that the official unveiling of Unreal Engine 4 will take place sometime later this year. As one might expect, the guys over at Epic are pretty certain that their new engine will knock your socks off.

Speaking to G4TV at this year’s DICE Summit, Rein teased the debut of their new technology, saying:

People are going to be shocked later this year when they see Unreal Engine 4 and how much more profound an effect it will have.

Considering the unbelievable track record of the studio and their current position within the industry, it’s hard to imagine Epic failing to blow us away. Then again, when looking at how amazing games already look, they’re really going to need to pull some serious punches if they want to “shock” the gaming world.

Several months ago, word had it that Epic’s Unreal Engine 4 was set to launch sometime in 2014. I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to get a sneak peak at what Epic has in store for the future of gaming.

What would be really nice is that games could be updated with new technology just by DLC. For instance they change environmental destruction affects, then by DLC updates to the game engine especially for Multi-Player games.

If the future is Digital Gaming in the Cloud then doing this would add value to games in that they could just be updated with a new engine and some DLC and there you have it new game…

I’m not a fan outside of the main company working with their own engine. Look at Unreal 3. Too many games looked similar and feel the same way. The horrible exception is that Epic knows their engine better than everybody else and the amount of time needed to learn and master it leaves far too many games unpolished and weak. I respect and enjoy companies that make their own in-house stuff.

I hope Unreal 4 is a little more PS3 friendly…it took a while for developers to use it well with the hardware
