PlayStation Store Preview – February 7th, 2012: D’Oh!

This week is jam-packed with a great mix of downloadable and retail content, both old and new. The highlight of the week is difficult to choose, as Jak and Daxter HD Collection has been broken up into each singular game on the PSN, and is competing with Gotham City Imposters, Shank 2, and my personal favorite The Simpsons: Arcade Game. Also, don’t forget to pick up Final Fantasy V for free and a demo for The House of the Dead III if you’re a PS Plus subscriber.

Also, be sure to look out for our PlayStation Store Preview 2.0 “firmware update” in the coming weeks, as this feature is going to undergo some changes in anticipation of the PlayStation Vita launch.

Amazon France Outs Uncharted Trilogy Edition

Amazon France, who has time and time again spoiled major announcements by preemptively listing everything from new games to HD collections, to console bundles, has possibly outed an Uncharted Trilogy Edition for the PlayStation 3.

Amazon France lists the Uncharted Trilogy Edition as having a March 21st release date, and will feature Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, and Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception.

This “Trilogy Edition” of Uncharted may only be made available in France, where the PS3 is currently the top-selling home console. Which makes sense, because elsewhere, there’s already an Uncharted Dual Pack available featuring the first two titles in the series.

However, Amazon France has been right on the money many times before, so don’t rule it out completely.

We’ve reached out to SCEA for comment. We’ll keep you posted if there is any official word.

Dragon’s Dogma Gets Resident Evil 6 Demo; PS3 Owners Get To Wait

Capcom has revealed that their upcoming title, Dragon’s Dogma, will feature a voucher code to redeem a playable demo of the freshly announced Resident Evil 6. This should be great news for all, but there’s a catch…

Purchasers of Dragon’s Dogma for the Xbox 360, will get exclusive first-access to the Resident Evil 6 demo starting on July 3rd, a full 60 days earlier than PlayStation 3 owners, who are stuck waiting until September 4th.

This must be the yin to the PlayStation 3 and Vita’s exclusive Street Fighter X Tekken character yang. Although, I’m sure that if given the choice, most of you would prefer early access to Resident Evil 6 over the pot-bellied old-school Mega Man and Pac Man.

Dragon’s Dogma releases on May 22nd in North America and May 25th in Europe.

Sony On Vita’s Struggle in Japan; Monster Hunter Coming To Save the Day

Since the PlayStation Vita launched in Japan this past December, the staff here at PlayStation LifeStyle has been signing the praises of the hardware and its games. The Japanese public isn’t feeling the same way, however, and sales have been off to a rocky start. Sony understands the reasoning behind it, and has an ace up their sleeves “scheduled for the coming months”.

With titles like Uncharted: Golden Abyss and wipEout 2048 leading the PlayStation Vita launch window, it’s easy to see that the current line-up is more appealing to the West rather than Sony’s native territory of Japan. PlayStation France CEO Philippe Cardone agrees:

The games available at launch in Japan do not correspond to the typology of the Japanese public.

Sony does, however, have a solution coming down the pipeline:

It lacks a particular game, Monster Hunter, scheduled for the coming months.

Monster Hunter has been a major factor in the PSP’s success in Japan, and the franchise helped boost 3DS sales around the PlayStation Vita’s launch. It’s sad to think that almost an entire region can be won over with just one title or series, but it’s clear that the lack of a Monster Hunter game hasn’t done the PlayStation Vita any favors.

Despite sales continuing to struggle in Japan, the PlayStation Vita is primed and ready for a successful Western launch on February 22nd.

Insomniac Says Resistance is Futile, Won’t Make More Games

Insomniac’s Resistance franchise will always have a special place in the hearts of PlayStation 3 owners, especially those who picked up their console around launch, when the only game worth playing was Resistance: Fall of Man. If you fit that bill, prepare to have your heart broken.

Insomniac CEO Ted Price told VG247 during an interview at Southern Methodist University’s Game::Business::Law Summit that they won’t be making any more Resistance games.

As a fan of the series and Insomniac, it pains me to hear this, but I do understand. Resistance 3 sold far below expectations for a third console-exclusive game in an established series, on a system that has a pretty large install base at this point. It sold even less than the original Resistance: Fall of Man, and was also the first game to introduce Sony’s PSN Pass.

Sony does own the Resistance IP, not Insomniac, and Resistance: Burning Skies is in development for the PlayStation Vita, so this certainly isn’t the end of the franchise, but it is the end of Insomniac at the series’ helm.

2012 releases are about to kick into high gear, but this week isn’t too shabby either. There’s plenty on the DLC front, a few demos, and a couple PSN games. This week, The Darkness II demo steps into the Octagon with a demo for UFC Undisputed 3 – whoever wins, there is bound to be a lot of battered and bruised bodies in the wake.

God of War IV, Syphon Filter 4 Announcement Coming Next Month?

It’s been almost two years now since we last wielded the Blades of Exile in the name of vengeance as Kratos. It’s been another two years since we’ve suited up as Agent Gabe Logan. But according to a new rumor, the fourth official game in each series may be announced next month.

As reported by Sillegamer, the latest issue of PLAY magazine suggests that God of War IV and Syphon Filter 4 are due for an announcement in February.

PLAY magazine says that Syphon Filter 4, in development at SCE London Studios, “will be announced and released during 2012″ and “will see a return to the world of shooting, espionage and Gabe Logan’s superb name.”

The magazine then brings up the recent job listings for God of War IV pointing at the possibility of multiplayer for the game, and hinting that they know something the public does not.

Both titles are listed for a February announcement. Something tells me, though, that at least one of these titles will be for the PlayStation Vita. Thoughts?

Mortal Kombat Vita Exclusive Features Revealed

Ed Boon has revealed some of the exclusive features to be found on the PlayStation Vita version of Mortal Kombat when it releases this Spring.

While speaking with the PlayStation Blog, Mortal Kombat co-creator and head of NetherRealm Studios Ed Boon talked about some of the ways Mortal Kombat will take advantage of the Vita’s touchscreen and other functionality.

Boon revealed that everything from the PlayStation 3 version of the game will make it into the Vita version, including the DLC characters, story mode, and challenge tower. However, the game will only feature one-on-one multiplayer matches over Wifi and Ad-hoc. No tag team or eight-player matches will be there.

The game runs at a crisp 60 frames per second, and features touchscreen X-ray moves and fatalities, although they are optional. A second, entirely new 150-challenge challenge tower has been added, focusing on the Vita’s touch and tilt functionality. New “Test your” mini-events have been added again putting focus on the Vita’s touchscreen, accelerometer and gyro. Unfortunately, NetherRealms Studios opted not to utilize the rear-touch panel.

Mortal Kombat for the PlayStation Vita arrives some time this Spring.

Flickr App Released for PlayStation Vita

The PlayStation Vita is capable of running a number of apps, including Facebook, Foursquare, the already released LiveTweet Twitter app, and more. Last night’s Japanese PlayStation Store update brought two new Vita games as well as a new app.

Along with wipEout 2048 and StarStrike Delta, a Flickr app was released for the PlayStation Vita on the Japanese PlayStation Network Store. The application is developed by Sony Computer Entertainment, Inc.

The app lets you view and share pictures, as well as leave comments – this is a full fledged Flickr app on the Vita.

It’s good to see that Sony will have these apps ready for the Western launch of the PlayStation Vita. We should see Skype, Facebook and Foursquare released in the coming weeks in preparation for Vita’s launch in the rest of the world.

We’ve just downloaded the Flickr app for Vita now, we’ll provide an update when we’ve had enough hands-on time with it.

Possible Resident Evil 6 Viral Campaign Hits Web

It’s been a while since we heard any talk about Resident Evil 6… and with all of these Resident Evil spin-offs sustaining the brand, it began to seem like there was no hope left for a proper RE sequel. If this new viral campaign is related to Resident Evil 6, then there really is no hope left.

It’s difficult to believe anything in regard to Resident Evil 6. There have been leaks, fake trailers, everything you could imagine. Which is why I am still skeptical about this new viral website and trailer that has mysteriously appeared. But the one part that leads me to believe that this is indeed related to Resident Evil 6, is the date.

All over the nohopeleft.com viral site, the date of January 19th, 2012 is plastered everywhere. That date is of particular significance, because that’s when Capcom is holding their Resident Evil “Fright Night” in San Francisco. The event is being held to highlight the upcoming RE: Operation Raccoon City for consoles and RE: Revelations for the 3DS. This viral stuff could be related to that, but would be a little overkill to promote titles that are already announced, and nearing release.

Rumors have pointed to the next Resident Evil game taking place in China, which could be backed up by the viral video located on nohopeleft.com, which features a distressed woman speaking Mandarin. Watch the video below.

So is it related to Resident Evil 6? We’ll know for sure come tomorrow night.

Mortal Kombat Puts The Moves On PS Vita With Exclusive Content

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and NetherRealm Studios have officially announced Mortal Kombat for the PlayStation Vita, complete with new gameplay features and exclusive content.

Mortal Kombat for Vita, is the same award-winning MK that you’ve been playing since last year on consoles, but tailored to be played on the go. MK for Vita will launch with several new features and platform-exclusive content, which Warner Bros. say will be revealed over the coming months. The same statement leaves us to believe that Mortal Kombat on Vita is still some ways off. No release date or window was given.

NetherRealm Studio head-honcho and co-creator of Mortal Kombat Ed Boon says it will be the “best fighting game experience available on the new mobile platform”.

If you recall, Shaun Himmerick, an executive producer for Warner working at NetherRealm Studios, was among the first to mention Sony’s then-nameless PSP successor by saying it was “a pretty powerful machine”. That was back in September of 2010, which could mean that MK for Vita has been in development for over a year, already.

Windows Phone Is a Real Life-Saver

Windows 7 Phone was on-hand during the shooting of Gentlemen Hall’s music video “Gravity Will Break Our Bones”. The shoot takes a disastrous turn, but thanks to the quick, connected Windows Phone, the day (and the risk-taking cameraman) is saved.

Super Stardust Delta Trailer is The Bomb

A new trailer has been released of Super Stardust Delta highlighting how the game takes advantage of the PlayStation Vita’s unique, touch-enabled feature set.

The trailer was released in anticipation of the game’s release on January 19th in Japan (called StarStrike Delta there), and shows how the game utilizes the Vita’s OLED touch screen and rear touch panel.

We experienced Super Stardust Delta hands-on at E3 and got a brief taste of the game’s “Crush” mode where you use your index finger on the front screen and your thumb on the rear to make a pinching action to “crush” incoming asteroids.

The game releases next week on the PlayStation Store in Japan for ¥1000, which is roughly $13 USD. Taking the exchange rate and weak dollar/strong yen into account, Super Stardust Delta launches alongside the PlayStation Vita this February.
