We recently were invited to San Francisco to check out the latest upcoming titles being published by Xseed Games, and were able to go hands on with their upcoming title Orgarhythm. A highly original music based strategy game.

There once were two brothers who served as gods, ruling over all creation and destruction. One day, they both decided to settle down on a particular planet. The older of the two chose to make his home underground so he could be closer to the energies of the planet itself, while the younger of the two chose to make his home on the surface where he could feel the heat of the sun.Eventually, both gods decided they would create life to keep them company and do their bidding. The older brother created loyal followers from his destructive side, while the younger brother created loyal followers from his creative side. The older brother and his followers then proceeded to devour the planet’s energy from within and destroy everything they could get their hands on, while the younger brother and his followers cultivated the earth, turning the surface world into a land of plenty.

It was only a matter of time, however, before the older brother’s followers found their way out of the underworld, resuming their swath of destruction up above. And while the younger brother had up until now turned a blind eye to his older sibling’s misdeeds, he could no longer sit idly by. For the sake of his people, the young god had no choice but to take up arms and join the fight.

Therein sets the tale, but doesn’t begin to explain a gameplay mechanic that is reminiscent of the popular PSP Patapon series. Where Patapon played out as a side scrolling, 2D rhythm action game, Orgarhythm takes this to the next level by bringing it into a 3D world.

With an almost top-down view, you can command your guys based on their abilities. Each of the three groups of your soldiers are color coded, so knowing what the color means, will aid you in your strategies. The colors gave the game a rock-paper-scissors feel to it. You’ll have to learn to master water, sharp/blunt objects and fire. Having a group of your guys dropping boulders onto the heads of opposing forces can go a long way to winning your battles.

The touch screen controls felt great and kept the game going at a pretty quick pace. This is a rhythm game, so touching the screen needs to be done with the beat and bonuses are given when you’re successful – something that’s not really very easy in a room full of gamers checking out Xseed’s latest wares, but with headphones, this game will rock. As you progress through a stage, the beat will increase, amping the difficulty up a notch or two, but it still felt fun.

The game uses an adaptive AI, which will keep track of how you played through levels previously, and change their own tactics to give the game a newish feel when those levels are replayed. The music had some great beats to it, and there will be more music DLC available in the future. The developers have announced that they will be using indy music mixers, so there should be a wide variety of beats to choose from.

There will be a multiplayer mode, supporting 2 players. This will either be a co-op match, where you can work together to take down your enemies, or a head-to-head match where it’s a fight to the finish. We weren’t shown any multiplayer action, so we can only make an educated guess how that will play out.

Orgarhythm is set to be released, possibly simultaneously across all regions, this Summer. Japan may get it first, but either way, the game is shaping up to be worth the wait.

LEGOs have a tendency to attract younger crowds, and the video game series follows that same path. With no dialogue and simple assembly tasks, coupled with stories straight from whatever movie it happens to tie into, the LEGO video games have remained overly basic. Not that it has ever been a bad franchise, but it has remained simplistic in an effort to cater to this demographic. But because the original LEGO Batman sold over 11 million units worldwide, LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes hopes to build on that by also attracting an older audience.

No LEGO game has ever had real voice acting. Times change, and so does the LEGO series. For the first time in the history of the franchise, real voice actors have joined forces with original stories. No longer do you have to wonder what Batman or Robin are thinking since they can now speak their minds. Well, maybe not always, but you get the point. Also thrown into the gameplay is a new checkpoint system so you won’t have to start over at the beginning of a level if you happen to fail.

LEGO games are mostly about having fun, and this game seems to fit that mold well. We got to see Batman and Robin working together, while trying to take down the evil villain Two-Face. Busting their way through bad guys, and picking up those helpful little tokens, B & R work their way through puzzles that require switching between characters and building LEGO machines. Building mini-pods using these found LEGOs nets Batman a new Batsuit, with special accessories designed just for specific tasks on this level. Later on, it’s Robin who gets in on the action with an Acrobat Suit complete with a handy little pole vault tool.

Harley Quinn makes an appearance, along with the Riddler, and B & R are faced with more challenges that require working together. Having a friend working with you is definitely a plus, but not necessary. Having a friend jump in and help is as easy as pressing a button on a second controller. Robin is introduced to his Hazard suit, which doubles as a SCUBA outfit. While Batman travels above, Robin must swim his way underneath, activating switches, while Batman battles through the bad guys.

Once B & R work their way through these levels, they travel back to their underground lair, better known as the Batcave. Here, they have access to any of the vehicles they have previously unlocked. These include, but aren’t limited to, the Batmobile, the Batwing and the Batboat. These vehicles come in handy once you realize that LEGO Batman 2 is an open world game that you are free to explore. The game does start out as a linear game, but once you’ve worked through the introductory levels, you’re free to roam away.

By completing objectives scattered throughout the game, you’ll unlock other playable characters. Both heroes and villains are playable characters and some of the villains even have their own objectives to complete. Superman will probably be your first super hero to take for a spin, but don’t think he will be able to just walk right through every level in the game. Even the man of steel has his weakness, and there’s a rumor that Kryptonite has been detected in Gotham City. The Joker and Lex Luthor both know what it takes to stop Superman, so tread carefully.

Lex Luthor

With 50 playable characters, both good and not so good, the replayability factor is high. Add in the ability to create unique super heroes with customizable characters, and it then seems endless.

If you’ve never considered a LEGO game before, you might want to check this out. If you are a DC Comics fan, you’ll definitely want to check this out. The game looks like LEGO fun at its best, and then some.

Coming this Summer, to a console near you, the Iguana has been re-imagined and recreated to make him a more worthy opponent for our web slinging friend.

Iguana

Of all the cross-species to come out of Oscorp, only Iguana was never claimed as a creation of any of the company’s scientists. That’s because its true creator, Curt Connors himself, had no idea that one of his own former experiments would evolve to its current fearsome form.

Connors’ go-to lab animal, an iguana he referred to as “Iggy,” had weathered so many odd experiments over the past few months, it was a wonder the small reptile was still alive. Somewhere along the way, Connors had injected Iggy with a formula that appeared to have no effect at all. And it didn’t – at least not in and of itself. What this particular injection did manage, however, was to serve as a catalyst that slowly warped and mutated intended effects of other experiments upon the animal for months to come.

Shortly after Connors became the Lizard, Iguana revealed himself within the walls of Oscorp in all his seven-foot glory. As it turns out, after gestating for months, all of the strange science going on inside Iggy’s body had come to a head in the course of a couple of hours, morphing him into the remarkable being terrorizing Manhattan today.

How is Iguana different in the video game than the comic books?

In The Amazing Spider-Man videogame, Iguana has been re-imagined to be more animalistic than its comic book counterpart. The visual approach is less cartoony, which makes for really interesting details. He is also permanently mutated and does not return to his original form during the day. Therefore, he must hide in the dark corners of Manhattan in his effort to survive.

Why did you decide to go with a different version of the character?

In the spirit of the film reboot, we’re taking a more realistic and grounded approach to the game, including the characters and villains. We also wanted to have a clear separation between the Lizard and Iguana. While you can still feel the humanity behind the Lizard, Iguana is purely a genetic experiment gone wrong.

What more can you tell us about Iguana?

In the game, Iguana uses his scream in order to influence or mind control other creatures affected by the cross-species virus. That makes him unique among the other villains in the game, and Spidey will have to tap into his creativity to figure out how to defeat Iguana.

What are Iguana’s motivations?

One of the most basic motivations of all: survival. Like the other cross-species in the game, he has escaped from Oscorp and is being hunted down. Besides, everybody knows that crocodiles and iguanas and such live in Manhattan’s sewer system, right?

What is new and exciting about this version of Iguana?

His re-imagined appearance: he looks great and fierce with broken restraints still clamped on his arms and legs and very detailed scaly skin. He also has the ability to control cross-species around him in which makes for an interesting encounter…

The City of New York. The Island of Manhattan. Central Park. The Empire State Building. It surrounds you. Encompasses you. Even as you rest atop a sky-scraper, with Central Park to the right of you, your senses are telling you that this beautifully crafted city is ripe with crime and riddled with criminals at every turn. It is your job, no, it is your duty, to clear these streets and defend those that are too weak, or unwilling, to fend for themselves. Are you up to the task? Are you ready to defend the defenseless? Are you ready to don the suit and wear the mask? Are you ready to be Spider-Man?

The Spider-Man story goes back many years and has graced the inside of comic books, movie screens, and video games since its creation in 1962. After being bitten by a radioactive spider, our soon-to-be super hero acquires super strength and the ability to stick to and climb walls. He soon learns that with great power, comes great responsibility. This latest release will occur as an epilogue to this coming Summer’s movie release by the same name.

As Spider-Man, you can switch over to Web Rush mode, slowing down time, and giving yourself ample time to survey the area. Web points are visible and web slinging has never looked more fun. Dropping off the edge of your perch, you allow yourself to fall 100 feet. 200 feet. Quickly into WR mode, and you sling your web at a distant building, your momentum sling shots you towards your destination. The new rush effect blurs your peripheral vision, but allows you to focus on the task at hand. Moving from point A to point B has never looked more fun.

Spider-Man also has some new tricks up his tightly worn sleeves. Since we last saw him he has spent time studying the art of parkour. His ability to wall run allows him to change directions on the fly and adds to the series by breaking what could be a monotonous path around the city. Spidey can also go into WR mode while mid-swing, find another trajectory that might cut a bad guy off, and turn 90 degrees in mid-air with the flick of a wrist.

He has also studied the art of WWE Wrestling. Wait, is that an art? Either way, his hand-to-hand combat skills include the suplex and body slams, among other things. If at any time you feel overwhelmed or outnumbered, the new Web Rush Back feature allows you to slink off into the shadows and tend to your wounds. This is a great way to re-evaluate the situation and come up with a better plan of attack. Hand-to-hand combat isn’t always your best choice. Stealth attacks are a great way to take out isolated bad guys, and bringing the odds more in your favor. Spider webbed wrapped bad guys tell no tales.

Manhattan Island isn’t always a sunny place. The mood of the island can be gauged by the weather. When all is well, sun bathing in Central Park would be a great way for the citizens to relax and tweet about what they have seen you do. Once the bad guys start doing their dirty deeds, though, the weather will turn dark and overcast. Can you bring the sunshine back?

We catch up to Spidey now just as he uses his Spidey hearing to learn about a bank robbery gone wrong. The bad guys have jumped into a couple of cars and are terrorizing the streets with their erratic driving. Spidey throws caution to the wind and rushes to stop them. He swings from point to point, wall walking when needed, spinning around flag poles, and zeroing in on the high speed chase. He spots the car behind several police cruisers. He lands on a cruiser a couple cars back, and shoots to the next car, leap frogging onto the getaway car’s hood. using his web shooter, he starts covering the windshield and blinding the driver. LOOK OUT! A shotgun comes out of nowhere and Spidey has to quickly dodge the blast. Spidey quickly shoots a huge web between some buildings and, in one quick move, the car is launched into it. These bad guys are done, but another car is speedily escaping. No rest for the Spidey, and it’s on to the next car.

Spider-Man isn’t always Spider-Man, and when he’s Peter Parker, he needs somewhere for R&R. Staying in Jersey wouldn’t be anyone’s first choice if they work in Manhattan, so Peter somehow manages to snag some highly sought after realestate. The back story for how he managed to acquire an apartment in Manhattan has yet to be revealed, but knowing how hard they can be to acquire, we can’t wait to find out.

The Amazing Spider-Man video game is set to release on June 26th, just prior to the release of the blockbuster movie. While we didn’t get to play any hands on, what we did see was very impressive, and points to a bright future for everyone’s favorite web crawler.
