
Since 3D was introduced to the world of entertainment back in the 50’s, it has often been regarded as a fad. James Cameron’s Avatar, a film created to take full advantage of the latest 3D technology, has generated over $2 billion dollars in revenue worldwide, and the push for 3D HDTVs has begun. Sony is the major force behind this change, and has promised that the PS3 will support 3D with a simple firmware update. We have fantastic news–the much heralded update could be here quicker than you can put on those zany 3D glasses.
Sony has been unrelentingly pushing 3D gaming since last month’s Consumer Electronics Show. There, Sony was the biggest promoter of the revived format. Multiple interviews from Sony reps confirmed that the PS3 would be the focal point for Sony’s 3D push. Saying that, the console would receive an update for 3D support, later this year. Recently, a hacker claimed he has hacked the PlayStation 3. George Hotz says he pulled it off after five weeks of work with “very simple hardware cleverly applied, and some not so simple software.” Sony is now investigating the PS3 hack allegations.

3D is the hot topic at this years CES and Sony is looking to position themselves as a winner. John Koller chats with Jeff Rubenstein from the PSBlog about PlayStation 3 and 3D. The PS3 is 3D ready and will only require a firmware update and of course the appropriate 3D display hardware.
A few weeks ago, a trademark filed by Sony was uncovered. Dubbed Qriocity, the title alone piqued our “curiosity”. Originally we speculated it may have been a Qore-like service for the PSP. However, it seems as though Qriocity is Sony’s first attempt at bringing PlayStation Network ID services to other Sony products including network enabled Bravia HDTVs, VAIO PCs, and Sony’s upcoming line of Blu-Ray players.

With the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas debuting all forms of new technologies and cutting edge electronics, 3D imagery has become the main focus point for industry giants such as Sony, Samsung and Toshiba. Sony has positioned itself at the forefront of the 3D market, aiming to become the undisputed global leader in the sector bringing numerous 3D products to market over the course of the year. The multinational corporation also plans to use the PlayStation 3 as a vital foothold into the new market through firmware updates that will enable its 3D functionality.
There is no doubt that Sony is 3D’s biggest supporter, bringing 3D to Blu-Ray, HDTVs, and even the PlayStation 3. Sony had demoed games in 3D (WipEout HD, GT5: Prologue) as far back as last year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. During this year’s CES, Sony demonstrated even more PS3 games in 3D including some of the consoles most well-known titles.

As mentioned earlier this week, a firmware update (3.15) was coming to fix some issues that had arisen after the 3.10 firmware update. Ever since Firmware 3.10, users have been complaining about issues with syncing Bluetooth-enabled devices with the PlayStation 3. This includes Bluetooth headsets, keyboards, even Dualshock 3 PS3 controllers. Just announced is a minor firmware update that will resolve these issues. That’s not all, Sony is also sneaking in a “mini” sized treat in this firmware update.

Details continue to come out of the new 3.1 firmware update. In addition to Facebook and more colorful gamercards, this updated has added additional diagnostic features. Error reports can be sent directly to Sony in the event the PlayStation 3 is improperly shut down.

Today it was announced that firmware 6.20 would be released later this evening. The PSP’s latest firmware update brings support for the Digital Comic reader coming in December, as well as a couple other new features. Firmware 6.20 is now available to download.

Firmware Update 3.10 was recently announced for the PlayStation 3, including improved social network connectivity and general interface improvements. The system update for the console is now live.
It turns out those leaked shots of a supposed new firmware for our beloved PlayStation 3 consoles were real. Firmware 3.10 has officially been announced, and includes some nice social networking functionality as well as general UI improvements.
