Ubisoft has released a new, rather unorthodox launch trailer for Mad Riders.

Ubisoft and Techland’s upcoming PSN/XBLA racing title Mad Riders has a very different kind of trailer that’s kind of funny. The trailer parodies the styles of other trailers (slow-motion backwards, blaring music with big text, etc.) while showing some gameplay footage and, of course, promoting the release of Mad Riders.

Mad Riders will release on the PlayStation Store on May 29th for $9.99. The Xbox 360 version will launch on May 30th for 800 Microsoft Points and the same day on PC (via digital download) for the same price as the PS3 version. Square Enix has released the screenshots that tell the truth about what happened in yesterday’s Hope News Times Issue #5, in addition to a video that shows the making of the Hitman: Sniper Challenge GameStop pre-order bonus.

Yesterday, the Hope News Times reported that Stallion Armaments CEO Richard Strong Jr., in addition to his bodyguards and possibly others were murdered in an incident attributed to gang-related violence. However, today’s screenshots and video revealed that once again, it was Agent 47 that was responsible for the crimes. Agent 47 had been sniping his targets from a nearby rooftop. It appears that the Hitman: Sniper Challenge pre-order bonus at GameStop tells the story of what happened to an extent, as this event is the setting for it.

Square Enix also released a video that shows IO Interactive discussing the making of the Hitman: Sniper Challenge.

Capcom has revealed the box art for their upcoming survival horror title, Resident Evil 6.

Capcom Twitter account @RE_Games revealed the box art for both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game, which depict the logo of the game, an “RP” (Rating Pending) ESRB icon, and Capcom’s logo as well. To view the PS3 version of the box art, see the image towards the bottom of this post.

Resident Evil 6‘s box art isn’t the only news related to the Resident Evil series to emerge today, as Capcom has also announced the North American release date of PSN-only compilation Resident Evil: Chronicles HD Collection.

Resident Evil 6 is currently scheduled to release on October 2nd for PS3 and Xbox 360, with a PC version release coming sometime later.

It’s time to grab your tinfoil hats and prepare for the coming of an Orwellian nightmare – a new Sony patent highlights the possibility of a console that will track every aspect of your personality and life.

In a 2010 patent from Sony Computer Entertainment that has only just been published, Sony has detailed the creepy potential of a biometric controller and next gen PS Eye combination. The patent, innocuously titled “Automated Video Game Rating”, the company first describes how manual rating systems are flawed:

To guide consumers in their purchase, various rating schemes have been devised. Typically, these involve affirmative questioning of the users, and the use of their explicit input. Unfortunately, such an approach inevitably imports the biases of the users, and can lead to inaccurate or irrelevant ratings, because not all users are equally situated, and because haste, and sometimes deliberate dishonesty, factor into the rating session.

Fair enough – people do generally only rate a game if they really enjoy it or hate it, and there’s no way of knowing if that person has similar tastes to you. Sony’s proposed solution? To film you, watch you and listen to you.

The patent says that:

[A] Camera operates to observe the player during play, triggered to turn on when game play commences for instance. Facial recognition software, provided in camera or console , or even on a remote server such as rating server , serves to register various facial expressions and other behaviors of the player, in real time as the game is played. Expressions that can be registered include grins, grimaces, frowns, face contortions, looks of anger or astonishment, and the like. Each such expression is assigned a value that indicates a positive or negative experience and the degree of that experience at a particular point in game play. The values can be sent to ratings server through the network or stored on the console for sending at a later time when the conditions of network are more appropriate or the game deems more appropriate.

Continuing:

Other observational player data can also be collected. For instance, a sound recorder, integral with camera and/or console, can be used for voice recognition, to determine when expletives are used or when sounds or tones of contentment, triumph, anger or excitement are uttered. These incidents, measured in real time commensurately with game play, are also assigned various values indicative of their positive or negative nature and their degree. A user may shout “Hooray!” triumphantly upon defeating a foe in the game, for instance, and this can be detected and assigned a high positive value. Alternatively, the user can shout an expletive, which, if under expected circumstances, such as upon losing a life, may be assigned one negative value, while if under unexpected circumstances, as in uneventful game play, may be assigned a higher negative value as it may indicate boredom or lack of challenge or excitement. Other observational player data can include body position and posture and changes therein, along with various physical actions, such jumping up suddenly, flinging motions, and so forth.

So, at this stage, the patent allows the camera to watch your emotions, as well as listen to you. The level of accuracy of the watching camera could be potentially incredible:

• Temperature of the player’s hands or face or other body parts (via an infrared camera for instance) as signs of stress, frustration or anger
• Player’s gaze time for how bored they are to what is displayed on screen

Could the next PS Eye – which has been repeatedly patented – be even more precise than the recently revealed Leap camera (which is apparently 100x as precise as the Kinect)?

But the camera wouldn’t be the only thing used to work out exactly what you’re thinking. The patent mentions biometric controllers that measure your heartbeat and even sweat levels. This ties in to previous patents and rumors that the PS4 would have biometric controllers.

Using both these input methods, the console would also work out more personal aspects of your being, such as:

• Hair style recognized (large, long, afro, bald)
• Hair color
• Facial hair recognized
• Wears glasses
• Color of clothing
• Has an eye patch
• Wears earrings
• Wears facial jewelry (nose rings, etc)

This aspect of the patent is all the more baffling: while heartrates and sweat levels could potentially show your enjoyment levels of a game, what would your hair color have to do with it? Does Sony think people with blond hair like certain types of games, or that those with nose rings won’t like first person shooters?

In fact, the patent says something that isn’t exactly very politically correct:

Geographic information can even be used to point to cultural differences in players.

To get this information, the system could end up “analyzing IP addresses or by using GPS coordinates.”

You won’t be able to escape it when you travel either, with the patent saying that “the system can take the form of a portable gaming device”. If you have a 3G gaming device, it will then track where you play, and somehow work out your surroundings:

The type of games that are played while riding busses, trains or cars, or waiting in lines at a bank or at a bus stop can be tracked, based on geographic data, which can vary while the game is played. Also, indoor vs. outdoor game playing can be tracked, either geographically or using appropriate sensors, such as natural/sunlight detectors, provided for example on a portable gaming device. The geographical inference can even be resolve to the particular type of indoor room in a house or mall, or whether the player is seated at a desk, standing up in front of a TV, or reclining on a couch. Such information can elucidate player behavior and help match players to each other.

Don’t expect to be able to hide much from the system either if you have a Twitter or Facebook account, as it can access “databases such as those of social networks” to get your age and gender.

Of course, all of this is simply a patent and might never see the light of day, but even the fact that Sony could be contemptating such an invasive move sends chills down my spine.

Sony’s XDev has announced When Vikings Attack, a PSN action/brawler title from Clever Beans for PS3 and PlayStation Vita.

On the PS Blog, XDev Associate Producer Neil McPhillips revealed the game, which is set in a town that’s invaded by a battalion of Vikings. A local group of citizens bands together to fend off the Viking invaders and the citizens can pick up or destroy objects to use against the them.

The game has both adventure and Versus gameplay modes that can be played by 1-4 players and is a full cross play/save/buy title. Nearly any combination of four players on PS3 and Vita can get together to play the game: two PS3s and two Vitas, three Vitas and one PS3, one PS3 with three players and one player on Vita and more. Cross-platform save is supported for Adventure mode progress, regardless of where players are in the game, and saves can be uploaded or downloaded from PS3 or Vita. Also, if users buy one version of When Vikings Attack, they’ll automatically receive the other for free.

Multiplayer-wise, the game supports full local and online multiplayer modes.

Finally, When Vikings Attack is scheduled to release later this year.

The latest issue of the Hope News Times has been released by Square Enix for Hitman: Absolution.

The Hope News Times Issue #5 contains news about Dexter Industries, which seems to be growing in power with news that Richard Strong Jr., the CEO of company Stallion Armaments, his bodyguards and possibly others — a total of 16 people — were murdered in a violent incident described as gang-related. After news of Strong Jr.’s death, Stallion’s stock plummeted in value, which saw Dexter Industries picking up 34% of the company. Stallion Armaments is described as a direct competitor of Dexter Industries by Blake Dexter himself. Dexter’s press release about the purchase of the company is expected to raise production demand, which would create new jobs in Hope, according to the headline. Insight into what happened to Strong Jr. and his bodyguards may be offered when Square Enix & IO Interactive release new screenshots of the game tomorrow.

In lighter Dexter-related news, an “advertorial” for the paper shows Lenny Dexter (Blake Dexter’s son) talking about his love of Roberto’s Chicago Style Pizza.

Square Enix has released a new trailer and new screenshots for upcoming open-world title, Sleeping Dogs.

The new trailer, which appears to consist entirely of gameplay footage and some cinemas, discusses the basics of the game. The game is set on the island of Hong Kong, which is home to the criminal organization known as the Triads. Players control undercover cop Wei Shen, whose job is to infiltrate the Sun On Yee Triads and bring them down. Wei’s loyalty to the Triads will be pushed to the limit, torn between the Triads’ code of honor and his loyalty to his police work. He’s trapped in a spiral of deceit and paranoia.

To prove his loyalty to the Triads, Wei will need to shoot, maim, and kill enemies to follow their orders. Wei is an expert martial artist, which allows him to take on a wide variety of enemies. The trailer claims that Sleeping Dogs has the most advanced fighting system in any world game. Wei can use both the environment and objects to take down his enemies. Sometimes, enemies will escape and Wei will have to jump, slide, and dodge obstacles to catch them. He can disarm opponents and use their weapons against them. He can also take cover and when the time is right, vault out of cover to activate slow motion.

Wei will sometimes be tasked with shooting his enemies from vehicles as his allies drive them. Wei has his choice of vehicles, of which more than 65 different kinds are included in the game. He’s shown stealing a car by leaping from one, onto the roof of another, and breaking into it. If Wei doesn’t have a gun, he can ram his opposition off of the road.

In order to survive, Wei will have to toughen up his skills. He’ll have to earn money to purchase outfits, items, and vehicles. Items and some outfits provide vital buffs to character stats. Wei can use his Triad connections to help with ongoing police investigations. He can also participate in underground street races and perform Triad favors to unlock new buffs and moves. Wei can “live like a true Triad” and get to know the four districts inside and out, try his hand at singing at the karaoke bar, engage in fights in the fight club, gamble for cash in the gambling dens, or hit the dockyards to bet on cockfights. Wei also appears to be able to interact with women to some extent, but to what extent is unspecified.

Every act Wei accomplishes affects his “face” or social standing. He can also earn XP on two levels: as a policeman and a Triad, but if/how those affect gameplay is unspecified. Face points increase as Wei completes jobs, takes over neighborhoods, and gains favor among the Triads. The higher Wei’s face level, the more respect he commends. With more respect, Wei can have more opportunities to access high-end shops, get better discounts at stores, and move up in the Triads to unlock new missions. The trailer closes with a bit more footage, the game’s release date and a message to pre-order now, and then the Sleeping Dogs Facebook and site URLs.

BioWare has announced the release of upcoming free DLC for Mass Effect 3‘s online multiplayer mode.

Mass Effect 3‘s Rebellion Pack will release for free worldwide to players who have redeemed Online Passes on May 29th (PS3, Xbox 360, and PC). However, PS3 users in Europe will see the pack’s release on May 30th. (A listing for the DLC had previously been leaked on a Sony Hong Kong site.)

The pack contains new characters who have new abilities and unique loadouts, new weapons, a new objective for missions, a new gear slot for the equipment screen, and new maps. The new characters and weapons will be made available inside existing Reinforcement Packs.

The new characters are:

• Vorcha Soldier (with Bloodlust ability)
• Vorcha Sentinel (with Flamer skill)
• Male Quarian Engineer (with Arc Grenade ability)
• Male Quarian Infiltrator (with Tactical Scan ability)
• Ex-Cerberus Vanguard (with new Lash attack)
• Ex-Cerberus Adept (with Smash and Singularity)

The new maps are Firebase Jade (a salarian facility ancient reservoir surrounded by waterfalls) and Firebase Goddess (a map with a circular layout inside the center of a Thessian metropolis that combines heavy fire and elevated firing positions).

The weapons are described as follows:

• Cerberus Harrier Assault Rifle – These Cerberus-modified Mattock rifles are fully automatic. Cerberus gunsmiths reined in the recoil issues, resulting in a gun that stay on target, but delivers slightly less punch per round than a standard Mattock. As such, the weapon is typically utilized by Cerberus’ elite troopers, who train constantly to make every burst count.
• Reegar Carbine Shotgun – This electrical weapon improves upon the arc pistol’s design by generating a sustained current on its target. This weapon is named for the Quarian Reegar family, whose marines have served valiantly against the Geth.
• Krysae Sniper Rifle – This Turian antimaterial rifle is modified to kill Reaper enemies. The Krysae’s scope uses a rangefinder that adjusts to keep the target in proper proportion to the shooter, which comes in useful when the sniper is forced into close range. Its specialized ammunition is both armor-piercing and explosive. In a desperate move, the Turians released its specifications over the extranet so that nearly anyone with a fabricator could manufacture this weapon to help the war effort.

The new objective randomly occurs during waves 3, 6, and 10 and tasks players with retrieving a high-priority package and securely escorting it to a designated extraction zone on the map.

The new Gear slot on the Equipment screen offers a persistent gameplay bonus that won’t expire after the end of a match. The new items will vary from weapon upgrades to character enhancements and will be available through reinforcement packs.

Die-hard Metal Gear fans have a lot to look forward to this E3, with Konami and Platinum Games poised to blow the lid off of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance in a big way.

Konami (and Kojima specifically) are known for their epic teasers, especially right around E3. This year they have not only confirmed that Metal Gear Rising will be playable on the show floor, but have also revealed the E3 demo title screen in an effort to get fans salivating for the impending gameplay blowout.

Check it out below.

Sure, Rising may not offer up the traditional Metal Gear experience that hardcore fans have been crying out for, but man doesn’t that title screen—music and all—get you hyped for the game? Platinum has a pretty solid track record when it comes to action games (Bayonetta, Vanquish) so there’s still plenty of reason to have hope that Revengeance will be a stellar experience.

Just try to overlook the name.

Capcom has announced a special compilation edition of Street Fighter games, in addition to an international tournament, to celebrate the fighter franchise’s 25th anniversary.

Capcom has announced the limited edition Street Fighter 25th Anniversary Collector’s Set for PS3 and Xbox 360, which includes a wide variety of Street Fighter content and a number of games from the Street Fighter franchise. The set will release on September 18th for both platforms and retail for $149.99.

The content included in the set is:

• Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix
  
• Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike Online Edition
• Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition with all costume DLC
• Street Fighter X Tekken with all character and Swap Costume DLC
• A two disc Blu-ray set that includes a video documentary that highlights the influence of Street Fighter on fans — and vice versa — throughout the years. The set also includes: The anime videos from Street Fighter IV and Super Street Fighter IV, all of the episodes from the Street Fighter animated series, and Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie.
• An 8″ tall specially commissioned collectable Ryu statue, depicting him mid-Shoryuken with flames underneath.
• An 11 disc soundtrack containing game music, fan remixes, and fan game music.
• A 64 page hardcover art book that includes fan pieces from professional and aspiring artists alike.
• A full-size replica of Ryu’s belt that includes his classic “Fūrinkazan” in kanji.
• Each set comes individually numbered, complete with a certificate of authenticity.

Capcom has also announced a tournament series to celebrate the game’s anniversary, which will feature the following games: Street Fighter X Tekken, Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition, Street Fighter III 3^rd Strike Online Edition, and Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix. The tournaments will include over $500,000 worth of cash, non-cash prizing, and amenities. Below is the most current list of dates and locations for the tournaments, which are subject to change.

• July 28-29 in Austin, TX
• August 11-12 in the NY area (location pending)
• August 26 in Taipei, Taiwan (location pending)
• Mid-September in the Tokyo Region, Japan (date and location pending)

Capcom also announced the following about the tournaments:

Adding an extra level of white-knuckled excitement to the competition, the first-place Street Fighter X Tekken player will be crowned champion and be handed the keys to an all-new custom designed Scion FR-S Sports Coupe. Capcom has partnered with Scion, Five Axis and Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA), to create a one-of-a-kind Street Fighter-themed sports car, complete with video entertainment hardware from SCEA and a modified exterior from Five Axis including a custom FIVE:AD aero kit, spoiler, wheels, as well as many more premiere components from leading automotive aftermarket companies.

Finally, Capcom has announced that a new Street Fighter 25th Anniversary site will be created that will allow fans to share stories about how Street Fighter influenced their lives and will include all anniversary celebration details, including how to register for the tournament series. Capcom teased us a little while back with a trailer and a handful of screenshots, but now thanks to a rather lengthy video, gamers can get their first detailed glimpse at Lost Planet 3′s gameplay.

As you might have guessed, the game will feature both third-person action as well as first-person mech-based combat, both of which are shown off in the video below. Prepare yourself, there’s a lot of orange alien goo spattered around the snow-filled environment.

Is it just me, or do some of those third-person segments seem a bit reminiscent of Dead Space and its dark, lonely corridor exploration? With Dead Space 3 rumored to take place on an icy planet, these two threequels may have more in common than you might think.

Lost Planet 3 is being developed by Spark Unlimited and is scheduled to release sometime early next year for the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. Be sure to let us know what you think of the game and how it appears to be coming along in the comments below.

On the PS Blog, Zen Studios has announced KickBeat, a music combat game for PlayStation Vita.

In KickBeat, enemies circle around the player before attacking from one or more of the four “cardinal” directions. Enemy attacks are synced up with a track’s beat and other high-energy moments in the song. Enemies are defeated when the player presses the button that corresponds to the enemy’s direction right as the enemy begins to attack the player. (For example, if an enemy attacks from the right, press right on the D-pad or O at the right time.) Also, tapping the portion of the screen where the enemy is attacking from will work as well. If two or three enemies are on screen at once, players will have to push all of the required buttons at once. The Vita’s D-pad and buttons can be used simultaneously, which will be essential when players get to the expert difficulty levels.

KickBeat‘s soundtrack includes music from the following artists:

Sega has announced the release date of Super Monkey Ball Banana Splitz for PlayStation Vita.

Super Monkey Ball Banana Splitz will release for PS Vita on October 23rd. AiAi, MeeMee, GonGon and Baby all return in the game, which contains more than 100 stages and 8 mini-games (including such fan favorites as Monkey Target and Monkey Bingo). The game also has Vita-specific features, including the (optional) ability to use Vita’s tilt motion controls and the ability to use the system’s camera to capture real-world objects to create custom stages within the game. Banana Splitz also has online multiplayer and global leaderboards (accessible via GPS).

THQ and Volition have announced that new DLC is available for Saints Row: The Third today.

Penthouse Pets Nikki Benz (2o11 Penthouse Pet of the Year) , Justine Joli (2008 Penthouse Pet of the Year Runner-Up), Ryan Keely (2011 Penthouse Pet of the Year Runner-Up), and Heather Vandeven (2007 Penthouse Pet of the Year) are added to the game via the Penthouse Pack, which is currently available for $3 on PSN & Steam or 240 Microsoft Points on Xbox Live. They can be added to a player’s gang and can be called into combat at any time.
