2D pig-tossing platformer Tomba! will be coming soon to the PlayStation Network.

Joystiq reports that Tomba! (known in some territories as Tombi!) will see release on PSN as a PSOne Classic via MonkeyPaw Games this summer.

MonkeyPaw CEO John Greiner gave the following comment in the report:

Sony and MonkeyPaw have a good working relationship. I think they appreciate the titles we’ve brought to the Store. And they value the support we give the games. Having a plethora of Japanese content is a distinct advantage PlayStation has over Xbox. But the games still need to be brought Stateside. So our model helps Sony spread their Japanese edge and we help Japanese developers get their titles to a wider audience. Hence, Sony is willing to work with us on titles that may not have otherwise been licensed out. Support is key.

MonkeyPaw has acquired the rights to the first game, but not the sequel. Greiner did say that releasing the sequel, 2.5D platformer Tomba! 2: The Evil Swine Return, is possible. However, Tomba! has to sell first before they can “extend [their] relationship” with Sony and Tokuro Fujiwara, founder of Whoopee Camp and director of both games in the series.

Sony is currently working on bringing classics from the PSone library to the Vita in the near future, and we just can’t wait! As such, we here at PlayStation LifeStyle decided to compile a list of all of the noteworthy titles that still haven’t been added to Sony’s library of PSone Classics.

So without further ado, let’s get right into it.

Digimon World 3

While yes, the first two titles were only slightly better than downright abysmal, Digimon World 3 was a breath of fresh air and a step in the right direction for the franchise. Those that are familiar with the television series will instantly understand what the game is all about. Digimon is essentially a Pokémon clone rooted in a digital, computerized reality. It sounds a bit hokey, but man, when you’re 12 years old, collecting virtual monsters in a computer world feels like the coolest thing. Digimon World 3 manages to capture this childlike wonder in an experience that is not only fun as a functional RPG, but also as a surprisingly well told story.

PaRappa The Rapper

Loyal Sony fans will instantly smile at the mention of PaRappa, the classic rhythm-based game from Masaya Matsuura. The off-beat gameplay and unique art style are a refreshing change of pace amongst the rest of the PlayStation library and would definitely lend itself to the Vita’s wide suite of control options. If there’s one game that could really take advantage of the Vita’s touch controls it’s this one. Not only that, but a port to Sony’s handheld would be able to expose younger gamers to this truly unique experience who missed out on it the first time.

Mega Man Legends

Mega Man Legends is undoubtedly one of the most polarizing entries in the popular Capcom franchise. The blue boy’s jump to 3D was far from smooth, but one filled with some rewarding moments that gamers will forever cherish. We all remember the classic 2D side-scrollers from the NES days, but this is far from traditional Mega Man. While it may not have the same tight controls as its predecessors, you have to applaud Capcom for trying something different. It’d be great to revisit these memories on the PS3 or (soon) the PlayStation Vita.

Valkyrie Profile

This RPG is hands down one of the most under appreciated games in the PlayStation’s library. The game is centered around a Valkyrie (go figure) named Lenneth, who is tasked with recruiting the souls of the dead in order to survive the end of the world. Where Valkyrie Profile really shines is in its robust cast of fleshed out characters, and its unique and innovative battle system – two hallmarks of any quality role-playing game. This is one gem that really deserves to reach a wider audience. 

Galerians

While franchises like Resident Evil and Silent Hill stole the spotlight, one quality little horror title tragically slipped by unnoticed. Galerians is about a psychic-powered boy name Rion who’s past is filled with mystery. As you work your way through the game, you begin to uncover the boy’s horrifying past and how he got his psychic abilities. Offering a truly unique and eerie premise, Galerians manages to deliver where many other horror games fail. Bringing this little bundle of scares to the PS Store would be fantastic gift to PlayStation gamers who missed out on it the first time.

Persona 2: Eternal Punishment

Not to be confused with Innocent Sin, Persona 2: Eternal Punishment is a much more adult and mature experience. The Persona series is hailed by some as one of the PlayStation’s finest role-playing franchises, and Eternal Punishment is the cream of the crop. That is why its absence from the PSone Classics library is nothing short of a crime.

Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions

If you’re a loyal PlayStation gamer, then there’s a good chance you have a soft spot for the Metal Gear franchise. Well, if you’re looking to just jump right into sneaking without having to wade through all of those cutscenes, VR Missions is just the game for you. Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions is essentially just a compilation of a bunch of virtual reality missions (like the title implies) that are incredibly addictive and all sorts of fun. This one would be a great title to bring on the go and eat up a few hours on those long trips.

This week is jam-packed with stuff to download. There are demos aplenty for the PlayStation 3, and even one for the Vita. Mortal Kombat Vita is ready to throw down, but the biggest game this week is probably PSOne Classic, Legend of Dragoon. If you’re PS Plus, though, there are other PSOne Classics giving it a run for it’s money.

Just yesterday, PSone classic Buzz Lightyear of Star Command was spotted on the Vita’s marketplace, leading hopeful gamers to believe that Sony’s new portable will soon be getting support for the classic library of original PlayStation titles.

According to a Twitter post by Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida, the company is doing their very best to bring the functionality to the Vita as soon as possible, asking gamers to “Pls be patient.” It is clear that Sony is well aware of the fact that this is hands down one of the most highly requested features for the handheld, so believe Yoshida when he says “our engineers are working hard on it.”

While many will argue that this functionality should have been available right out of the gate, especially considering the fact that the classics have been well established on the PlayStation Store for quite some time, it’s great to see Sony really make an effort to completely unify PlayStation’s online space. Now if only they can update the remote play to actually do something, we can get back to loving the handheld.

Easily the most requested feature for the PlayStation Vita, gamers have been eagerly awaiting news of PlayStation One support on the handheld. Now, a slip up by Sony suggests that we may see the much-desired update soon.

Sony has previously confirmed that support is coming, simply stating it would arrive “soon” – a word that in Sony’s dictionary means somewhere between tomorrow and the release of the Vita 2. A user on Reddit downloaded a PSOne game, but was unable to get it to work. On the EU PSN Store, ryukyu22 found PS1 game Buzz Lightyear of Star Command – something we’ve been able to independently verify. Ryukyu purchased the game, which downloaded as usual for a game, and showed a LiveArea screen specifically designed for the PS1:

Sadly, tapping the game only brought up a screen saying that “the file is corrupt”. What does this mean exactly? It could mean nothing, but it does seem to point towards Sony preparing the marketplace database for the upcoming update. Also, the fact that the LiveArea for the Vita has a PS1 screen prepared is a good sign.

A classic PS1 RPG, The Legend of Dragoon, will be coming to the PSN in the near future.

On the PS Blog, SCE Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida announced that four-disc PS1 RPG The Legend of Dragoon, originally released in North America in the year 2000, will be re-released on the PlayStation Network as a PSOne Classic on May 1st. No pricing details were revealed for the game.

Of note in Yoshida’s comments about the game is that he mentions that a sequel was in pre-production, but eventually canceled:

I still occasionally hear from fans of The Legend of Dragoon, and many want to know if there is a sequel. LOD2 was put into preproduction after I left the Japan Studio, but was eventually cancelled for some unknown reason, and the team members moved on to different projects. Some people still work in the Japan Studio, so we talk about the memories of developing LOD when we see each other at company functions.
