With the advent of PS2 Classics on the PlayStation Store, the possibility of more greats from the generation past quickly became a reality. So it was for the original Killzone, which launched on the PS2 in 2004. The announcement fans were waiting for came: Killzone would be made available as a PS2 Classic. However, no further details were given, and the announcement has since faded into black.

Until today, that is, when the official KillzoneDotCom Twitter account revealed that Killzone on the PS3 had been “delayed indefinitely”. No reason was given for the delay, but one could speculate that it could be re-positioned as an HD remake of sorts – but being just one game from the PS2, the scenario is unlikely. Bad news, indeed.

But, not all is lost. When asked about a Killzone 4, the man (or woman) behind the KillzoneDotCom Twitter curtain replied jovially: No comment!

It’s a stretch, but the smiley emoticon usually signals a tease of sorts. Could yet another Killzone game be in development at Guerrilla Games, on top of the new IP they’re working on? A report from EDGE magazine from back in November believes that is the case. We’ll find out if and when Guerrilla and Sony get closer to deployment.

This week is jam-packed with a great mix of downloadable and retail content, both old and new. The highlight of the week is difficult to choose, as Jak and Daxter HD Collection has been broken up into each singular game on the PSN, and is competing with Gotham City Imposters, Shank 2, and my personal favorite The Simpsons: Arcade Game. Sony’s third financial quarter (October – December 2011) didn’t turn out as the company had hoped, with a whopping net loss of $2.03 billion – twice as bad as forcasts. The company’s total revenue for the quarter clocks in at $23.37 billion, a 17.4% decrease when compared to last year.

It is unfortunate to see Sony struggling so much, especially around the holiday season, but massive financial losses is something the company has grown accustomed to. In fact, this is Sony’s fourth year in a row of being in the hole. It is important to note that Sony has had several adversities to overcome this past year, including the terrible flooding that set the company back and ”unfavorable foreign exchange rates”.

On a positive note, the PlayStation 3 saw a 13% increase in software sales, with a total of 66.2 million units sold. The PS3 itself sold 6.5 million units, up 200,000 from the same period in 2011. While no data was given for the PlayStation Vita, sales for both the PS2 and PSP were down from last year – the PSP had sales of 2.4 million, a drop of 800,000 units, while the PS2 sold 900,000 units, a drop of 1.2 million units.

Fortunately it looks like some major changes are in store for Sony. There’s no doubt that Kaz Hirai, the newly appointed president and CEO of Sony Corp., has a lot of work ahead of him when he takes on his new responsibilities this April.

Hirai told a news conference:

I have a very strong sense of crisis about the environment surrounding us. We cannot be afraid to make painful choices for the future of Sony. Our rivals and the operating environment won’t wait for us.

The poor financial results mark Sony’s fourth straight year of losses.

The PlayStation Vita sold about 18,000 units last week, which is both bad and good. Obviously it’s not a whole lot, especially for a new system, but it is a 20% improvement over the week before. A big contributor to its success, no doubt, was the release of highly anticipated RPG Tales of Innocence-R. The game marks an important milestone for Vita as it takes the highest chart placement of any PSV to date. Hot Shots Golf sold more units in its debut (61,000 to ToI-R‘s 54,000), but when it did, it was in the seventh place position on the charts; Tales of Innocence-R‘s performance lands it in third place. The top 15 best-selling games were thus:

This is also the first time the Vita has outsold the PSP in a week, with the exception of its debut. With Ragnarok Odyssey and Gravity Rush on the horizon, things could indeed finally be looking up for the system’s standing in Japan.

For the week of January 2-8, the Japanese hardware sales figures look like this, courtesy of Media Create:

3DS: 240,819
PS3: 74,459
PSP: 71,033

PS2: 1,323

The New Year is when people give big amounts of money to minors in Japan, which explains every system seeing an increase. The ones with the biggest jumps, though, are the ones with the most appealing software. Strong as the Vita’s launch lineup may be, it’s tough for it to compete the 3DS’s brand new Mario games, the PSP’s seven years of great software, and Wii’s endless sea of low-priced shovelware.

Software sales had Nintendo dominating, though the PS3 and PSP did manage to sneak two games apiece into the top 20; those were Warriors Orochi 2 and Final Fantasy XIII-2 for PS3, and Monster Hunter Portable 3 and Winning Eleven 2012 for PSP.

Sony has announced how its hardware units — the PS2, PS3, PSP, and PS Vita — have performed at retail this holiday worldwide.

The PlayStation Vita, as of January 5th, has sold 500,000 units since its release in Japan, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Sony also said that more than 70 titles are in development for Vita for the Japanese market. The PlayStation 3 exceeded 3.9 million units worldwide during the holiday season and is on track to reach Sony’s annual sales target of 15.0 million units before the end of the fiscal year (March 31, 2012).

The PlayStation Portable continued to have fairly significant sales, having exceeded 1.6 million units worldwide. The PlayStation Move exceeded 1.7 million units worldwide, with Sony saying that the Move will see more supported and dedicated titles in 2012. The PlayStation 2 still managed to put up impressive numbers, exceeding half a million units worldwide.

Combined, the PS2, PS3, PSP, and Vita exceeded 6.5 million units worldwide. What are your thoughts on these sales figures? Let us know in the comments below.

A class action lawsuit filed on behalf of Esther Leong, a Final Fantasy XI player, has been dismissed. The lawsuit alleged that Square Enix did not accurately disclose the game’s monthly fees, character slot fees & late penalties on the game’s packaging.

The case was dismissed by the 9^th Circuit Court of appeals this past Tuesday after being filed over 2 years ago. Originally, Ms. Leong was seeking $5 million dollars in damages on behalf of all FFXI subscribers.

Deputy General Counsel of Square Enix Steve Ross said in a press release:

We are very pleased with the Court’s ruling. We feel vindicated since many of the allegations were patently false. We only wish plaintiffs had contacted our dedicated customer support for assistance before resorting to a lawsuit. Square Enix will defend itself against baseless litigation.

The MMORPG released in 2002 in Japan on PlayStation 2 and Windows PC, and came to the US in 2003 for PC and 2004 for PS2. In 2006, Square Enix released an Xbox 360 version in both North America and Japan.
