All though more great games is always a good thing, there will undoubtedly be some that fall by the wayside, as gamers focus more on the big name titles. We’ve compiled a top five list of PS3 games that fared well critically, but lacked the overall selling power of the bigger titles.

<span

What this amounted to was a decent third person shooter, letting players first take down Cybertron as the Decepticons, and then take it back as the Autobots. Tight controls, phenomenal voice acting and sound effects, gave an overall solid game that Transformers fans have been asking for. Not simply relying on the single player alone, the online offerings for Transformers: War for Cybertron were quite extensive. With four different classes to choose from, and the ability to level up each character, War for Cybertron had more to offer then most online shooters. The only downside to the multiplayer was the community was rather small, so finding a match could be tough. Even with the smaller online community, the single player alone makes up for it, and really is one that gamers should be going back to.

<object

You get one of the best arcade racers released to date. Split/Second gives you all the thrills of your basic arcade racer, but cranks the action up to 11. From little takedowns like debris shooting across the road, to bringing whole buildings down, the action is always entertaining. What may be lost by most gamers is besides the thrilling action, we also get a great racer on its own. One other aspect to Split/Second a lot of gamers missed out on, is its absolutely great online experience. The multiplayer in Split/Second has its issues, but is definitely one of the better online racers out there. Sure it may not be worth the $60 it was released at, but picking it up at a reduced price now makes it well worth it.

<object

Fast forward to the October 5th release and gamer’s worries were put to rest. What we received was a beautiful action platformer, that combined not only a very engaging combat system, but also an excellent story. Combining gameplay from many franchises, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow kept gamers on their toes as they tackled the nearly 20 hour campaign. Sure some gamers and critics bashed Lords of Shadow for using many elements from other games, but there is still no denying just how fun this game is, even if it did not bring anything new to the table.

<object

You play as Monkey, a prisoner that has escaped a slave ship, and had the misfortune of stumbling across Trip, another prisoner. Trip installs a slave collar on Monkey and he must help her find a way home. Every aspect of the game will have you on the edge of your seat, waiting to see what happens next. The interaction between the two main characters only helps to solidify the top notch story. Sure 3D Dot Game Heroes doesn’t bring a lot new, but really once you get your hands on it you will instantly remember why you started playing video games in the first place. href="http://playstationlifestyle.net/2010/08/08/fall-in-love-with-this-lbp-pitfall-recreation/">Sackboy recreated retroactively but we have never seen him in stunning 8-bit HD–not like this anyways. Officially announced and released by developer and publisher Atlus, creators of PS3-exclusive 3D Dot Game Heroes, a new update has hit the online servers containing <a

According to Manager of Public Relations and Sales at Atlus, Aram Jabbari:

“We can think of no more fitting a character to feature than one that has become synonymous with creativity and imagination in gaming: Sackboy. Now, people who start up their copy of 3D Dot Game Heroes can begin their adventures through the grand Kingdom of Dotnia with one of gaming’s most recognizable icons!”

Want to see more of the newest, plushy citizen of the Kingdom of Dotnia? href="http://playstationlifestyle.net/index.php?s=3d+Dot+Game+Heroes">3D Dot Game Heroes owners and fans alike will wake up to something quite awesome today, as Atlus has just opened their all-new ‘Hall of Heroes’ portion on the game’s official site which will not only add a ton of fun to an already awesome game, but also take the game in the direction of, dare I say, Play.Create.Share.

Yes, 3D Dot Game Heroes is making social gaming history, at least on the PS3, with it’s new ‘Hall of Heroes’ which can be found on the game’s official site. The way this feature works is quite simple, user’s can upload their 3D Dot Game Heroes custom-made characters to share with the world as well as download other user’s creations. Each creation can easily be downloaded and moved over to the PS3 via memory stick or USB thumb drive, with users being able to vote on their favorites as well.

The amount of user-generated content is already growing at an alarming rate and is getting bigger by the day. Atlus is even offering up Amazon game credit as an incentive for those with the best designs. This is, without a doubt, one awesome addition and a big plus for Atlus, as this sort of thing may just seep over into LittleBigPlanet territory and start something brand-new for gaming. If you’re a fan of the classic Zelda-style of play, or even just a gaming fan in general and haven’t gotten your hands on this title, you really owe it to yourself to check it out.

In the meantime, we encourage those with 3D Dot Game Heroes to upload your creations and share them with us in the comments below and we’ll be sure to check them out!

recently updated website, a new CGI trailer has been released for Another Century’s Episode: R. On both the website and at the end of the new trailer, “PlayStation 3″ is easily discernible. With this, and no sign of a competing console’s logo, it can be assumed that the game is heading to the PS3 exclusively. However, given the nature of the game, there is a good chance the game may never leave the shores of Japan. In any case, the CGI trailer deserves a viewing, and it can be seen below:

<br

Read on below to see if its worth the journey and its price of admission.

I am going to try to go this whole review without mentioning Legend of Zelda, event though I already have more than once, so bear with me and please remember, this is not Legend of Zelda. Ok, so I am off to a rocky start but let’s not forget that 3D Dot Game Heroes is a game that makes a name for itself and doesn’t need to stand in the shadow of you know what. The game thrusts players into the world of Dotnia, a land that once flourished in 2D. Things have dried up in Dotnia and the King, wanting to give his people new life, turned everything in the world to 3D. The transition however was not smooth as it awakened various evils throughout the world only to be squashed by a hero. Fast forward many years down the line and this is where your story begins, with the world near chaos again. The King turns to you to pull the legendary hero sword from the stone (wasn’t that a movie?), retrieve the 6 orbs of power, and save the world. The story does not get much deeper than that, instead going for more of a lighthearted approach that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

Before you can start your quest, you must create your ultimate hero. I hope you are ready for an advanced look at building Legos because this is exactly what the Creator/Editor feels like. After you open up the editor you are presented with a pretty hefty set of preset characters that you can pick. Ranging from your normal soldiers and wizards to Gundam suits and Dracula. You can of course, select one of these and change them to your liking or you can dare to be original and create your own from scratch. If you choose the more resistant path you are met with what at first looks a bit too complex, but really is not bad once you get the hang of it. Move blocks around and change their colors to create whatever you want; it’s fun and you can easily lose plenty of time making your character perfect.

Now it’s time to start your journey in the lush 3D world of Dotnia. You start on a world map with all the basics: a health bar, mana bar, mini map and your primary and secondary weapon on screen. The whole layout is almost identical to Legend of Zelda (boy is it hard not to reference Zelda) and the game will even beep at you when you get very low on health. Everything about the world of Dotnia screams charm and pure fun from the smallest of lego blocked enemy to each and every town. There is just something about this world that sucks you in and turns you into the young gamer that you once were. I know more than once I found myself reminiscing about the good ol’ days of gaming bliss, when games weren’t all about graphics, online MP, and shooting. It’s not all sunshine, lollipops and rainbows, however, as the HUD can get in your way a bit when you are near the top of the screen, making it very hard to see projectiles or enemies coming your way.

The mission that you are tasked with will set you off in your search of the 6 temples; each with their own challenges and elaborate dungeons to navigate through as you attempt to get the power orb at the end. You will find quicksand on your way to one orb and have to climb up a volcano on another, dodging the falling rocks along the way. Each Dungeon is filled with obstacles that to try impede you on your journey to your ultimate goal. As you trek through each temple they get tougher as you progress in the story, giving you huge satisfaction when you finally make it through and defeat the boss. Speaking of bosses, each one is very unique and just as the temples go, they become harder as you get farther into the game. You will find yourself fighting dragons, snakes and a killer bee who is not afraid to use his stinger. Ouch! The great part here is that after you defeat a boss, if you feel the need to show him up again or maybe just the need to kick a little ass, you can revisit his grave at anytime and revive him.

In the beginning you start with just your hero sword and a shield, but as you progress in the story your sword grows stronger and wider. Like a previous game I cannot mention by name, when at full health your sword is at its largest and most powerful. Once you do take a hit however, your sword shrinks back to its lesser form and becomes a bit less effective. You can swing your sword in all directions and use your shield to block incoming attacks. The combat is very fluid and feels just right for the game, but it is not without issues. I found myself often telling my guy to face right and swing his sword only to have him swing his sword up, annoyingly causing me to take damage.

Throughout the game you will find money and items by defeating enemies, smashing jars or doing a bit of yard work and cutting blades of grass. Money gained can be used to buy new items, weapons and upgrades for your swords. Each sword you can get through the game has a potential rating which shows you just how upgraded the sword can become. The upgrades for purchase range from giving it more power, to making it wider and longer. There are many various looking swords in the game, each with their own special abilities. For example my sword of choice is a pink star sword that when equipped and at full health, will at times give my player a star ability much like Mario where I am invincible.

If you get tired of using your sword during battle you can always turn to your bag of tricks for more ways to attack. In this bag you will find your trusty boomerang, arrows and bombs. If all of this is not enough to get you excited there is always the magic that will do the trick. Magic is obtained in the game from the orbs you collect while dungeon crawling. The magic in the game is fun to use, especially one later in the game that allows you to coat the entire screen in ice. You will also discover a bestiary book on your travels which you can use to record enemy data. At any point in the game you can pull out this book and see exactly what each recorded enemy drop, their weakness, and other useful info. If all else fails, you will always have your Zelda dash maneuver to get you out of harms way or ram the opponent, but watch out for the walls!!
<hr

Whether it’s gameplay, story, pricing, or business practices, sometimes the industry needs a little friendly fire from gamers to keep it in line.

Other times, developers look down their sights and fire off a well placed bullet right into our thrilled heads. This is Josh & Cameron, and today we have a special guest for Headshots & Friendly Fire.

French Voice Actors

Name your favorite French voice actor. I’ll wait…okay, time’s up. You probably couldn’t think of one, because it seems like most French voice actors couldn’t do an American accent if their lives depended on it. I’m sure the French are a wonderful people with many fine qualities, but an American accent is their Achilles’ heel. David Cage has stated that he is considering using American actors for his next game. Apparently, I’m not the first person to express this opinion. It’s very noble of David Cage to give voice-acting work to his fellow countrymen (especially in this economy), but I’m sure they could find jobs doing terrible voice acting for White Knight Chronicles 2.

FRAGnStein A Mess

I love a good peripheral as much as the next guy, especially when it is designed to give me the feel of using a mouse on my PS3 when I am playing a shooter. In comes the FRAGnStein, and with it comes the bundle of mess that is setting up the damned thing. Hook it up to your PS3–oh, it doesn’t sync–okay, plug it into to your PC and install the drivers. OH WAIT, the drivers don’t seem to want to work, so your PC does not recognize the device. On top of that, when new games are patched for the device, you have to go online and get the drivers for that game. Is it too much to ask that the device plug in and start working?

Maybe Young Fragnstein Will be Better

Wimpy Big Daddies

I’m a Big Daddy. I want to be super-overpowered–a tank that can take thousands of bullets. I don’t want a drill that takes 3 hits to kill someone, and to have to dodge behind cover after taking only a few bullets. Controlling an overpowered character in a game can work. If you can kill anything you want with just one hit of your drill, then you need to make sure that the game isn’t too easy. That’s why you restrict the movement of the character. Make the Big Daddy walk slow. Enemies may be able to move a lot faster than you, but if you ever catch them, they’re as good as dead. Imagine slowly making your way towards a splicer with a Tommy gun, being sprayed with hundreds of bullets, and then taking your drill and plunging it through his chest. Then a Big Sister shows up, and you have to run away, but you can’t out run the Big Sister because you’re wrapped in two tons of iron. Now, the all-powerful Big Daddy has become weak and helpless in the shadow of the Big Sister. I don’t care who you are, everybody would love to play that game.

Upgrading Weapons

In some games, having to upgrade your weapons feels a little dated. God of War isn’t about upgrading weapons. It’s about tearing out a centaur’s intestines and using them as a jump rope. Once I unlock the Hades Blades, I shouldn’t have to spend time to make them more powerful. They should be perfectly capable of getting me through the game as is. I would feel the same way if Uncharted 2 made me upgrade the guns. I should be completely focused on how to position myself during a firefight so that I can take out the enemies, not about whether I want my pistol to do slightly more damage. Upgrading weapons is still very fun in games like Ratchet & Clank and Resident Evil. These are the games where I would want to go back to a previous area and just grind so that my gun can hold 100 bullets or shoot buzz saws that also perform free colonoscopies. God of War 3 and Uncharted 2 are both very linear games, and the first playthrough is always the best. I don’t want the experience to be bogged down with micromanagement. Final Fantasy and Demon’s Souls can have their textbooks filled with weapon statistics, just as long as the only math I have to do in Uncharted 3 is counting the number of dudes I kill.

In 3D Dot Game Heroes, you take the role of a hero on his quest to save his world. Nothing new there, however, it’s the world that makes the game unique. The world, which had previously been in 2D, is now coming close to disaster after the King turned everything to 3D. As a descendant to a legendary warrior, you are tasked with collecting 6 orbs of power and sealing evil once again. The story is told through text dialog with no voice acting to be found in the game.

Right as you dive into the game you will start to find the similarities to the Legend of Zelda at every corner, from the music to the inventory, even the layout of the land appears to be very familiar. To start the game, you must first select your hero of choice from a list of preset characters or create your own from scratch. The preset character templates range from normal soldiers to your out of place shark fin or battle tank. Each of the preset characters can be edited to fit your own style by changing the color blocks or adding new blocks. The editor is a bit difficult to wrap your head around at first as you try to piece blocks together to resemble anything but don’t fear, there are plenty of options already there to pick from if your not feeling creative. Characters are separated into three different types which are Hero, Scholar and Royal. Each of these start you out differently: a hero lacks any magic up front, but starts with more life then a scholar. So on and so fourth.

Once you get past all this and into the actual game you will find just how smooth and exciting the game play is. Just like Zelda you have your sword, shield and secondary items. These secondary items consist of things such as bows, a boomerang, spells and of course bombs. Just like the Legend of Zelda franchise, which 3D Dot Game Heroes drew so much inspiration from, you will find yourself chopping down grass to find items, fighting enemies as you cross the vast map and destroying cracked walls with well placed bombs. The combat is pretty basic, but it is a ton of fun, and that is what the developer was aiming for. Speaking on the combat and more specifically your sword, you will find the option to use your money to enhance your swords width and length among other things, to ensure you always have the biggest stick. However you will only see the full potential of your sword when you are at full health; once you take damage you will default to a standard sword.

It’s also worth noting that this game just looks gorgeous. The attention to detail in turning the whole world into a 3D Lego wonderland is just flat out stunning and awe-inspiring. When you find your hero standing next to sparkling water or you kill your first enemy and he breaks into hundreds of little blocks all over the ground, you will clearly see the beauty in this title. Not just the visuals, but the audio is also top notch as well. The game features a great score and attention to detailed sound effects which help to bring this world to life.

3D Dot Game Heroes brings back memories that I myself had long forgotten. There is just something about swinging a sword big enough to fit half the screen and watching the destruction that follows as hundreds of mini “Lego-like” blocks or “dots” litter the battlefield. The game doesn’t take itself too seriously with a lot of tongue-in-cheek humor, including references to past games. Overall, 3D Dot Game Heroes is shaping up to be a must have for any PS3 owner, especially at a $40 asking price. Check back with us in the next few weeks for our full review.

first-quarter 2010, and the year has already begun with a storm of phenomenal titles. While 2009 was a great year for PlayStation owners, many anticipated what has been widely considered as one of the strongest first-quarters in gaming ever. Both MAG and Heavy Rain were smash hits, and Final Fantasy XIII as well as God of War III are about to make their vigorous debuts. However, nobody has questioned the strength of the first-quarter library. The question is, what is there in store for PlayStation 3 owners after March?
Gran Turismo 5 is arguably the most anticipated title of this generation. With roughly 5-years of development and a staff of over 100-people, Gran Turismo 5 looks to solidify the series’ reputation as being a step ahead of the rest. This title looks to sport over 1000 cars, over 50 tracks, a robust online mode and tons of realism. There is no doubt that Gran Turismo 5 will be a solid title and a must-have for car enthusiasts everywhere.

The Last Guardian

Team ICO. That’s all that needs to be said to demand attention to this title. A couple trailers have been shown which show a deeply emotional experience within beautiful environments. As with the previous games by the developer, expect a captivating experience unlike any other.

3D Dot Game Heroes

3D Dot Game Heroes is just a strange-looking RPG. To others, this is a reincarnation of the golden days of gaming with an updated spin. 3D Dot Game Heroes looks to recreate the gameplay and style of vintage RPG titles such as Zelda on the SNES. Expect a simple but incredibly fun action RPG with some unique twists.

ModNation Racers

great impressions for those who had a chance to try the title out. As with LittleBigPlanet, ModNation Racers has the potential to appeal to a wide-audience and is simply a lot of fun to play. Casuals will have a blast with the addictive and multi-layered core gameplay, while hardcores will have the deep online system and impressively-detailed level creator to keep themselves occupied. ModNation Racers is shaping up to be a huge hit.

Agent

<a
