Catacombes de Paris

A Grateful Dead Whirlwind World Tour
The winning player and a friend will start their journey in Paris, where they will stay at The Aida Opera Hotel, in the heart of the city, for three nights. While in Paris, they will tour the Catacombes de Paris, a labyrinth of tunnels covered entirely in the skulls and bones of 18th century Parisians. The catacombs, officially known as l’Ossuaire Municipal, were constructed in the late 18th Century to accommodate the overwhelming number of bodies as population soared beyond the capacity of church cemeteries.

Pere Lachaise Cemetery

The next stop in Paris will be Pere Lachaise Cemetery, one of the most famous cemeteries in the world, and eternal home to the likes of Jim Morrison and Oscar Wilde. Pere Lachaise Cemetery was established in 1804 by Napoleon I, following a ban on cemeteries within the city limits of Paris. If there are zombies to be found in France, the master zombie-killer who wins this tour is sure to find them at these eerie historic locations.

Once Paris has been cleared of any undead, it will be off to Egypt, where the winner will spend five nights at the Mercure Hotel in Luxor, overlooking the Nile River. By day, they will explore ancient Egyptian history with tours of the Valley of the Kings, final resting place of Egyptian kings and nobles including King Tutankhamun, and Hatshepsut Temple, a mortuary temple dedicated to the sun god.

The Valley of the Kings contains at least 63 tombs, with new ones discovered as recently as last year. Nobles, pharaohs and their families were laid to rest there from 1539 BC to 1075 BC. Do they remain at rest? That will be for the Burn Zombie Burn! contest winner to find out for sure!

A private tour of Hatshepsut Temple will introduce the winner to Hatshepsut, the fifth pharaoh and the longest-reigning woman in the Egyptian dynasty. As was the custom, Hatshepsut oversaw the construction of her own mortuary temple, which stands today on the West Bank of the Nile River, near the entrance to the Valley of Kings.

doublesix today announced the success of its first PlayStation® Network title ‘Burn Zombie Burn.’ The game has now achieved sales of 70,000 units, the studio’s internal benchmark for success. As digitally distributed titles tend to have a longer life cycle, the game continues to sell well after the initial release and doublesix are confident that ‘Burn Zombie Burn’ will reach a significantly higher lifetime figure.

James Brooksby, Studio Head of doublesix stated:

“We’re clearly delighted that ‘Burn Zombie Burn’ is performing well. It’s our first experience of digital console publishing and we’ve found the entire process very exciting and rewarding. However, I do wish that all the platform owners would make their digital sales figures public. We feel this lack of transparency is hindering the development of these channels. We’re happy to back this opinion up with the release of the figures for ‘Burn Zombie Burn’.”

Brooksby was quick to note that the team’s internal sales target of 70,000 copies sold was achieved without the release of their upcoming content, such as the Home space, bundles, expansion packs, competitions, and more. He continued on by saying:

Last month, we revealed that doublesix Games, the developers behind the PSN title Burn Zombie Burn!, were set to release a new patch adding hot new features to the beat-’em-up. More specifically, the new patch was said to add YouTube\ recording and uploading, as well as the ability to use custom soundtracks.

This new patch, releasing today, not only adds these new features and fixes leaderboard bugs, but also includes a brand-new teaser trailer for the next addition to Burn Zombie  Burn!, the first expansion pack titled Burn Zombie Burn!: In Space.

With the support doublesix is giving to players today, we can easily hope that the next expansion pack will innovate with new gameplay features as well. Make sure to stick with PlayStation LifeStyle for all your news on Burn Zombie Burn!

This week’s Home update is sure to make you full, as we will be receiving a new Fat Princess space alongside the release of the PSN title. Also, Burn Zombie Burn! will making a ‘hot’ appearance in PlayStation Home. Lastly a popular racing title finally gets a well-demanded feature.

FAT PRINCESS
With the release of Fat Princess this week, the PSN title will be getting the Home treatment. The space will be open for four weeks, as is it using the Events Space. A quiz is in the space, and you’ll need to answer eight questions. After you answer one right, you’ll be able to bring a piece of cake to the princess. Once you’re done, you’ll get a prize.

BURN ZOMBIE BURN!
Another PSN title will be getting a Home space this week (this one being permanent). Burn Zombie Burn! will have a nice graveyard for you to explore, with a shop, disco crypt, and a mini-game. As with most mini-games on Home now, you will get a reward/prize for completing it.

MOTORSTORM GAME LAUNCHING
MotorStorm: Pacific Rift is receiving game launching for PlayStation Home. You’ll know be able to game launch for the exciting title straight from the comfort of your virtual home. Also launching soon is a brand new MotorStorm space, which you can find more about on the Coming Soon page.

PLAYSTATION HOME THEATER
The PlayStation Home Movie Theater is finally getting a long-awaited update (as Europeans already had this), with 10 new screens. It will also be getting a brand new lobby, and specific theatre awards.

Burn Zombie Burn is a hot topic today.  First we had news of a patch arriving bringing some great new features,and now we have an update on some upcoming DLC.

Burning zombies is amazingly fun, so how could they possibly make it even better? doublesix games has the answer!

doublesix Games Senior Designer, Ollie Barder just sent us an update detailing an upcoming Burn Zombie Burn patch.  The patch version 1.02 fixes a few bugs, including scoreboard issues.  The patch also brings some new features…

After downloading the patch, Burn Zombie Burn will feature Youtube recording and uploading support, as well as custom in-game music. The patch is available for download now in EU territories, and will be available either later today or tomorrow in North America.

Many games get patched after release, but you really have to appreciate any developer that brings new features to their games instead of just fixing bugs.  Thanks doublesix!

Extinction (Bronze) - 100,000 Zombies killed.
- When you finish a level, it shows you how many zombies you have killed so far. Just keep killing and you will get this.

Paint The Town Red (Bronze) - Fill the screen with the maximum amount of blood on any level.
- Just kill anything and everything that moves, shouldn’t take too long to get this. My only suggestion would be to go crazy on zombies with the chainsaw. You can cut down entire crowds pretty quick.

Red Shirt (Bronze) - Kill the away team Zombie.
- There’s a zombie who kind of looks like Bruce, but is wearing a red shirt. When he teleports into the level, there’s a bell sound played when he enters. He should be easy enough to spot as he crouches down and looks through some binoculars. When you kill him you will get ‘Rampage’, which makes you invincible and gives you infinite ammo for a short period of time.

Hot To Trot (Bronze) - Last 30 seconds with 50+ zombies on fire.
- Easiest on the Woods level. Just keep running around the perimiter, lighting new zombies on fire. The zombies on fire will burn out after a while, so you pretty much have to keep lighting zombies on fire. I got up to almost 100 on fire when I got this trophy.

Murder On The Dance Floor (Bronze) - 1000 Zombies sent dancing.
- Use the Groove Gun (it emits a purple wave) on the Zombies to get them to dance, when dancing…kill’em. Be aware that once a dancing zombie is attacked it will no longer dance, it will come after you so make sure you use TNT, Gatling Gun, Lawnmower or the Chainsaw on them for easy points and quick deaths.

Brain Surgery (Bronze) - 100 Brains sucked.
- It can only be used on one Zombie at a time. It sucks the brain out and you then shoot it across the level. Other zombies will then be drawn to it and ignore you for about a minute. There’s a challenge level called ‘Zombie Bait!’, so use this level to get the trophy.

Texas Style (Bronze) - 100 Chainsaw Combos.
- A combo is achieved by killing a lot of zombies. When you start killing look to the left hand side of the screen to see a picture of your weapon and a bar, fill the bar to complete the combo. Do this 100 times for the trophy.

Dynami-Te-He (Bronze) - 1000 Zombies blown up.
- You can use the any of the 3 stages of TNT, propane tanks and even the exploding zombies as long as you shoot them. Kill 1000 for the trophy.

Graduation (Bronze) - Complete Zombie Academy.
- Complete all 8 Tutorials.

Tourist (Bronze) - All Arcade levels unlocked.
- Achieve a Bronze Medal on all Arcade levels.

Friend of Bruce (Silver) - All levels unlocked.
- To get this you need to get at least a bronze medal on each level so the next one unlocks. This includes all modes for each level and all challenges.

d6 Commends You (Bronze) - All Bronze medals.
- Achieve a Bronze medal on all Arcade and Challenge levels.

d6 Respects You (Bronze) - All Silver medals.
- Achieve a Silver medal on all Arcade and Challenge levels.

d6 Admires You (Bronze) - All Gold medals.
- Achieve a Gold medal on all Arcade and Challenge levels.

Friend of d6 (Gold) - All Developer medals.
- Developer medals are the highest scores for each level set by the devs themselves. On most levels it is 2X-3X higher than the score needed for Gold. This will take a while to achieve. Good luck!

PSN has been getting quite a bit of attention as of late for the quality of its service, as well as the large amount of high quality, innovative content. But there’s one aspect of PSN that doesn’t get as much media attention, but makes all the difference for game developers, and that’s Community.

Not just leaderboards or in-game voice chat. But actual lines of communication between gamers and developers. According to Doublesix studio boss James Brooksby, PSN has allowed developers to get much closer to their audience, and build content that is tailormade for that audience.

Though Doublesix, developers of Burn Zombie Burn, have experience working with both Xbox Live and PSN, Sony’s service as given them some critical advantages. Brooksby spoke at the BAFTA digital distribution panel last night, and this is what he had to say:

“There are different models for different platforms. South Park we’re making for Microsoft, and that’s a relationship where they are working on almost a standard model. We’re developing it for them and it’s their relationship to take to the consumer and carry on.

With Burn Zombie Burn for PSN the relationship we have is different. Sony sees itself much more as a channel, they have a store and they take a percentage for providing that channel, but you have a great deal more you can do within that channel. There are some very interesting models we can do in that space.”

The first patch for Burn Zombie Burn served as a good case study for how to incorporate user feedback directly into in-game features and content. Brooksby continued by saying:

“We listened to what people were saying and when we do our first patch it will have features that people have asked for. And then we do our first expansion pack it’s actually tailored according to what people are looking for.”

It’s great to hear that Sony is encouraging such a close relationship between developers and gamers, and we’ll be sure to bring you more feedback from developers on PSN and PS3. Until next time, stay tuned on PSLS for more updates.

Doublesix developed Burn Zombie Burn exclusively for PSN with the use of Sony’s recently announced “Pub Fund.” The “Pub Fund” provides developers with funds and marketing in exchange for making their titles PSN exclusive.It’s a win-win situation for both Sony and game developers. Developers are provided the opportunity to have their game exposed to as as many PS3 owners as possible, while Sony gets to deliver on its promise to make PSN a unique and compelling experience. Here is what James Brooksby of Doublesix had to say about the “Pub Fund”:

“I think there’s a number of other ways in which the Pub Fund can help you, not least because Sony suddenly has a more vested interest in your product’s success.” Since Sony is looking for a good return on its considerably sizable investment, not everyone can get on the Pub Fund. “Obviously there will be a level of quality expected from Sony’s side, so not everyone will be suitable for Sony either,” said Brooksby.

Looks like the “Pub Fund” could have a bright future, especially for startup developers.

Burn Zombie Burn! has been added to the ever increasing list of wonderful PSN Exclusive games.  This game is brought to us by Doublesix in Guildford, UK and Sony’s newest Dev perk, the “Pub Fund“.  This game is an arcade shooter that is absolutely packed with content.  Burn Zombie Burn! sets itself apart from the competition with tight controls and wonderful humor.  So is this game worth your hard earned $10 in this hard economy?

You may think that you have played enough games like Burn Zombie Burn! Sure, it is similar to the other arcade shooters on PSN, but how many of them let you set zombies on fire?  That’s right, none.  There are quite a few different zombies that you will take on in the game’s six levels.  Each level has unlimited waves of enemies.  There are even a few Super Zombies, or “bosses” that you will take on.  Those are the only similarities as far as I am concerned, as this is not another dual-stick shooter.

Burn Zombie Burn! has very tight controls and they work very well for the game.  You control Bruce, the games protagonist, with the Left stick while you shoot with either R1 or X.  You fire your vast arsenal of weapons in the direction Bruce is facing.  You will most likely want to use L1 quite a bit, as it is your auto-aim button.  While holding L1, Bruce will aim at the closest zombie and take them down as fast as you can shoot.  The best part of the controls is the R2 button, this will pull out a torch and allow you to run through hordes of zombies, setting them ablaze.  Setting zombies on fire is the name of the game in this case, and doing so will allow you to herd them wherever you run.  This is important for the next control, Triangle, which allows you to detonate TNT, decimating entire crowds of zombies.  While the control set also allows for strafing with the L2 button, I did not find myself using it at all.

The levels are laid out fairly nicely and work well for herding zombies.  There are a couple areas in some levels that have tight areas to squeeze through, which could cause some problems and allow things to get out of hand.  With this game you need to be aware of your surroundings at all times, as the constant waves of zombies don’t allow much time to take a breather.  This game is relentless, but far from impossible.  The best thing about Burn Zombie Burn! is that it stays fun all the way up to the 70th wave.  The ever changing zombies that come at you such as the Dancers, Rushers, and Exploders require different strategies, which helps switch things up a bit.  The Dancers wear tutus and hop and twirl towards you.  These guys are quick and you should take them out in a hurry.  The Rushers wear football helmets and will bull-rush you.  They cannot turn while bull-rushing, so they aren’t too hard to take down.  The Exploders wear a flashing light on top of a hardhat.  They will explode if they get near you, and any enemy they take out will result in no points for you.  While there are several other enemy types, these are the most common ones.

The zombies are afraid of fire, but once you set them ablaze they become faster and more intelligent.  They are very dangerous and have the ability to dish out a lot of damage.  This is all part of the game’s awesome risk/reward system, as the burning zombies will drop better items than the normal zombies.  The burning zombies are also your source of a multiplier; the number of zombies ablaze is equal to your multiplier.  There’s a lot of game content included for such a low-priced downloadable title.  First up is the Arcade mode, in which there are 6 levels and 3 modes of play on each level.  You earn medals for how well you do on any certain level and mode you play.  You must earn at least a Bronze medal to move onto the next level.  To add to the possible 18 levels in Arcade mode is the Challenge mode.  In Challenge mode, there are 10 various challenges that will give you an objective that you must complete with your given number of lives.  For those of you unfamiliar with these types of games, there is also a Tutorial.  There are a total of 8 tutorials that will teach you the basics of the game.

The 3 modes included in the game are Free Play, Timed, and Defend Daisy.  Free Play is just that…you play through the hordes until you loose all your lives.  Timed mode you start with a time and the burning zombies will drop time pickups.  Defend Daisy you have to protect your sister at all costs from the zombies, she does not move she stays sitting in a car in the center of the map.  Best of all the game includes 2 player split screen action.  You can play co-op through the all modes or you can play versus in free play and timed.  My one major complaint with this title is the lack of online co-op.  In this day and age, this should pretty much be standard for all current-gen games.

There are plenty of rewards to be had in this title.  You unlock rewards by earning medals on the arcade and challenge levels.  The rewards range from vision filters, art gallery, character bios, and a music player to play the games soundtrack.  There are also 15 Trophies to be had here.  Sadly, the game does not support custom soundtracks either.  I really wish that I could romp through this game, blasting zombies with some death metal music playing in the background.  Sure you can just turn your computer on to listen to music, but then you don’t get to hear the quirky sound effects.  The game has quite a few references to Evil Dead and Shaun of the Dead, which is very nice.  The engine that this PSN game is running off, Phyre Engine 2.40, is very powerful and definitely gets the job done. During my play time, I have had over 120 zombies on screen that were on fire, yet never experienced any hitches in the frame rate.  This game is very fun and very bloody.  So I do highly recommend picking it up, as it is only $10 and well worth every penny.  Happy zombie burning!

This weeks PS Store is looking kind of bare as far as confirmed content goes…  That’s not to say the few items that have been confirmed aren’t worth looking at.  In fact, Burn Zombie Burn, as well as the Resistance 2 Map Pack is looking to be must haves.  Make sure to check out the rumored content as we have a few exciting items this week.

[UPDATE]  We just removed an item from the rumored content, if you were lucky enough to see it, then you can expect it to arrive in some time next month.  We just got word that there is a chance it was pushed back.
