class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-163282" title="feature-operation raccoon city2" src="http://playstationlifestyle.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/feature-operation-raccoon-city2.jpg" alt="" width="685" height="300" />

It’s been a few years since gamers last saw Raccoon City. The tables have turned, though, as instead of battling Umbrella, players will take to the battlefield as members of the infamous organization. With this new take on the series and changes behind the helm, this could have been a great change of pace for the series, yet sadly falls extremely short.

Things in Raccoon City are going smoothly until the Umbrella Corporation discovers that one of their own, Dr. William Birkin, is planning to sell the G-Virus to the United States government. You join up with a group of the Umbrella Secret Service and are tasked with going into Raccoon City and securing the virus. Of course, things go horribly wrong, one thing leads to another, and now the virus has made its way into the sewer system and infected the entire town. Now your mission dramatically changes, as you are tasked with hunting down any survivors and silencing them before the story is leaked and Umbrella is tied to the town’s issues.

The story in Operation Raccoon City takes place during the 2nd and 3rd games of the series, so you will see aspects of those games popping up during the story and cameo’s from some of the series staples such as Leon Kennedy. It is cool to come at the story from a new angle and influence things such as whether Leon lives or dies.

The game is a third-person squad based shooter from SOCOM: Confrontation developer Slant Six Games. Operation Raccoon City features a main campaign that can be played with a mixture of four online teammates or AI-controlled squadmates. You can select one of six character classes to play as, each with their own abilities. One character has the ability to throw up radar to spot enemies within a set radius while another allows you to heal your teammates. As you level up your character and gain XP, you can purchase new abilities, both passive and active to use in the game. XP can also be used to buy new weapons, ranging from assault rifles to shotguns, with a fair bit of selection.

Split up into chapters, Operation Raccoon City allows you to traverse the landscape of Raccoon City, moving between checkpoints and cutscenes, fighting anything along the way. The cool thing about the campaign is fighting not only the zombies you encounter along the way, but also U.S. soldiers who are also fighting off the zombies. As you move through the levels you will find some of the signature door opening moments that have become staples of the series. There really is nothing like opening a door and having a pack of zombies lunging right at you. Other staples of the series return, such as Green Herbs and anti-virus sprays that magically cure your blood-thirst. If you take too much damage though, you will turn and ravage your fellow teammates until you are put down.

The problem with the campaign is that if you are not playing with human players, it is extremely flawed. Inconsistent teammate AI (hello Shiva!) are found throughout the game. Try to heal your fellow mates only to have them run away; yet try to run through a doorway to escape and watch the same squad members stand still, blocking your path. In fact, for the most part, the AI teammates are best used as meat-shields to keep the major bad guys off your trail. The game also introduces a new cover system where simply running up to the cover forces your player behind it. It rarely works the way you want, as you often take cover when simply trying to run past something, or whatever you have run up to isn’t actually something you can duck behind. What’s even worse, almost 75% of the time, the game has a weird habit of not letting you aim down your cross-hairs unless you are at the exact right spot of the cover.

Another big issue is one we have come to know with the series and its the spotty controls. It is in fact a SOCOM game with zombies, which can be a real issue as your characters turn with the ability of a half-dead terminator, meaning if you get caught in a narrow corridor with a quick opponent, it’s going to get frustrating. One thing is better though, as you are actually able to move and shoot, which adds so much depth to the combat that has been missing for some time in the series. The game also sports rather weak Close Combat. Going in close on zombies is a little fun at first but really lacks impact as your attacks don’t seem to do enough.

Once you get done with the five to six-hour campaign, it might be time to dig into a few of the online modes the game offers. Heroes mode sets you as either one of the games heroes or a member of the U.S.S. As the hero you must survive attacks from fellow players and zombies. Once you die, you spawn as a member of the U.S.S and try to hunt down the next player who assumes the role of hero. Survivor has two teams of four fighting off each other and monsters to try and secure a ride on the lone helicopter in town.

Team battle has two teams of four facing off against each other and zombies, with each kill your team makes adding to your meter. First to fill up the meter is the winner. Last is a mode where two teams of four try to collect vials of the virus and bring it back to base. These vials appear randomly and both teams must fight each other and zombies to secure them.

All of these modes are actually a good deal of fun off the bat but are far too similar as they all are basically two teams facing off against each other and zombies, with some of the conditions having minor changes. Things grow a bit stale as you progress and its very difficult to find other people online to play with. The majority of the people I found online were playing the radiation mode, with the rest being very difficult to find enough people in. What keeps these modes interesting are the inclusion of zombies, as no matter where you go in the multiplayer, you will be getting attacked by something. It creates a beautiful explosion of chaos throughout the maps, which are pulled from the campaign and there are not near enough of them, which adds to the whole getting stale thing.

Graphically and presentation wise, the game is a mixed bag. The animations in the game are severely lacking and there are not enough character models, as you see the same four zombies far too often, making it feel as though this is a town full of twins. The environments are also rather bland and the level design could use a little bit of work, but Raccoon City still feels very much alive… or dead I guess I should say. On the audio front, you get a few characters who sound very believable and some that are down right scary with how bad their lines are, such as the Russian character Spectre, who has some serious issues making a sentence.

After you have cleared the town of zombies, you will find Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City to be a game that leaves so much potential on the table. The chance to see the city from a new perspective is ruined by terrible AI, a wonky cover-system, a distinct lack of memorable moments, and a very short story. In fact, if not for the online experience adding some much-needed spike to the punch, this would be a completely stale and dull game. It is a great idea and should be commended for trying something new with the series. However, after a quick detour into Raccoon City for a weekend, it will be time to move on to something better.
<table

Any business wants to get the most money possible while using the smallest amount of resources. Downloadable content, still only a few years old, is evolving before our eyes, as a few companies like to test the waters of including inaccessible content on the disc. The only way to open said content, of course, is with your money, even though it’s already on the disc that was given to you. Whether or not this upsets you as a gamer, it upsets me as a grammarian, because something that’s already on the disc is not “downloadable” content at all. What are you downloading? It should be called “locked content,” though that probably wouldn’t sell as well. Alas, my high level of blunt honesty is why I could not succeed in marketing. Oh and Street Fighter X Tekken has this type of content.
So that you know who’s reviewing this, I should start by saying that the first time I played any Marvel vs. Capcom game was Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 for PS3. In the pre-analog days, I was a Mortal Kombat man because of the preferable control scheme. Street Fighter‘s controls never did it for me, so somehow this justified a 12-year vacation from Capcom fighting games. It made sense at the time. Upon reluctantly trying Marvel Versus Capcom 3, I was back in the game. Capcom having a deep love for re-releasing the same game with a few updates, it was less than a year till Ultimate arrived, which is now also available for the PS Vita. This portable version replicates the console experience with exactness. For jerks like me, the analog stick control makes all the difference.

Others may be interested in the game’s touch controls. These don’t have a huge impact on the game, but offer the ability to perform certain combos by tapping the screen. Against low-to-normal level CPU opponents, this method of simply tapping the screen to perform fast moves and 38-hit combos makes the game laughably easy. Going into “Touch Mode,” in which this tap scheme is used as the default, a player can effortlessly lay the Vita down and just tap the screen to plow through whole teams with one character. The touch controls seem like more of a throw-in than anything that really adds to the game, though of course not taking away from the experience either — unless of course you count the fact that when you use them, you’ve got a giant finger in the way of all those flashy visuals. Touch screen control can be turned off in versus mode, online and offline, so there’s no concern of the game being overrun by screen-tappers (an evolutionary step below button mashers).

Everything that made the PS3 version such a hit has been preserved in the Vita: characters, their move lists, the stages, etc. Ultimate‘s tweaks to the tagging system and importance of juggle combos are as much a key to victory in the handheld as they were on the big screen. PSV’s take on UMvC3 will require little or no adjustment time for those familiar with a console version. The fights are extremely fast-paced, for better and for worse. A player than can keep a combo going, using all his combatants skills and special moves as well as his tag partners, can do a devastating amount of damage in a short time. Being on the receiving end of this is a helpless feeling akin to being on a sinking ship. But it’s all in good fun, as one eagerly looks forward to every match with renewed enthusiasm.

Those new to the series will have to learn the particulars of the system and style from the fights themselves, as there are no in-game tutorials to be found. There is a Training Mode, but it offers no assistance for how to get the most of the fighting system. Most people ought to be able to pick it up over a few matches, but it’s strange not to have something as simple as a few text boxes to give an overview of what’s going on.

Odd lack of tutorial notwithstanding, UMvC3 is accessible to newcomers. One need not be a fighting game aficionado to enjoy this, nor does one have to be intimately familiar with comic books. The player might not know who Rocket Raccoon is, or perhaps only knows of Ghost Rider’s name and nothing more, but these Marvel properties still make for great fighting game characters, and that’s what matters most. The same can be said of Capcom’s side of the roster, with most of the team coming from games outside the fighting genre, yet making wonderful additions

Action looks virtually as good on the Vita as it did on PS3, with perhaps the backgrounds losing a small amount of flash. That could just seem that way because of the obvious screen shrinkage, though; either way, it’s largely inconsequential. It’s bright, it’s colorful, the characters all look stupendous, and the attack animations are pulled off with smoothness to spare.

Online play features two main modes, Player and Lobby. After the dust settles on a finished fight, a rematch is a single button press away, though the two players changing things up and fighting each other again is also done rather easily. If people want to up their ranks, they can do so in Ranked Matches. By selecting Ranked Match followed by Quick Match, one can simply jump right into a battle (once the network locates an opponent). In the Lobby, up to eight players can fight each other. If you enter while a fight is going on, you can see the power bars of the players fighting, which is a nice touch. If you’re already in the lobby when the tilt begins, then you actually get to watch the whole thing play out. That’s a great way to learn from other fighters while not being preoccupied with getting your trash kicked. Nice people might wish for some kind of way to congratulate each other after a spirited bout, but there is no apparent communication possible other than the kind one does with attack buttons.

Capcom has served up a dang solid fighting game for Vita owners. It’s fun, it’s got appeal to comic book fans, it’s got appeal to game fans far beyond the limits of Street Fighter, the online play is well put together, and the game constantly looks and sounds great. Anyone considering picking this up with their Vita would be making a good call.
<table

With Ninja Gaiden‘s pedigree, it is going to be tough for Asura’s Wrath to win over consumers, but hopefully this demo will at least give it a fair chance.

Capcom has also released some new screenshots of the game which you can enjoy below:
<div

More specifically, would you like to see another Dead Rising game? Well you’re in luck assuming you aren’t offended easily. Speculation have been floating around the web about Dead Rising 3, which is certainly in development after seeing the latest post on Dead Rising‘s Official Facebook. But just what will this unannounced title deliver?

Rumors proclaim that the new locale will be California, in a fictional city called Los Perdidos, which will almost certainly be a representation of modern day Los Angeles. Along for the bloody thrill in the United States most debt-drowned state will be millions of zombies who are purpoted to be illegal immigrants, which fits right into the California theme. Best of all, reports indicated that you’ll be able to play as a caucasian man named Rick who has worked many years as an auto mechanic, and is looking to find an escape from the city overrun by non-English speaking zombies.

If these reports are true, then this could be a game that offends a lot of people, and will probably end up on the news. But that isn’t anything that Dead Rising or it’s development team at Capcom are worried about, and we’re surely used to seeing games on the news and waving our fists in the air after seeing it. After all, just like Saints Row, this is a series that thrives on extremes and exclamation points. What better than to throw in some highly controversial political matter into a game that lets you destroy dozens of zombies with chainsaws and oversized cell-phones (as seen in the header image above).

No announcement date is planned, but there’s a very strong possibility that we’ll see the game at this year’s

In a recent PR announcement following a posting on the Capcom Unity blog, the update, dubbed “Version 2012,” will be released as a patch to current owners of Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition on December 13th. The update will “re-balance the moves of each of the 39 characters.” There are so many tweaks, in fact, that Capcom has gone ahead and rendered the changes in a PDF document, which you can take a look at here. Included in the changes are improvements in the number of frames that a move can be continued for, or damage dealt by certain moves. There are a lot of changes here, and it will seemingly only apply to owners of the very latest version of Street Fighter IV. Let us know if you spot any changes that you are particularly pleased or angered with in the comments below.
<hr

Mature is definitely right, and now it’s been rated as such by the ESRB.

Several months prior to release, Dragon’s Dogma has already been rated by the ESRB, and has received a Mature rating for several reasons including gore and violence, which includes some of the following content:

The frequent combat is accompanied by slashing sounds, cries of pain, and large splashes of blood; attacks sometimes result in dismembered limbs and/or scattered body parts. Some sequences allow players to injure/kill non-adversaries, including unarmed villagers; such acts are penalized by lower “charisma” levels for players’ character. Other acts of violence appear in cutscenes: a man strangling a woman in her bedchamber; a character impaling himself.

If only there were harpies too… oh wait!

During the course of the game, players may also encounter female harpies whose breasts are fully exposed at certain camera angles.

Dragon’s Dogma looks like a great departure from Capcom’s previous work, and we were impressed with <a

After lots of positive impressions over the year, Capcom is only a few months from finishing development, and an official release date has been revealed.

While speaking at a Capcom event last night, Kazuhiro Tsuchiya stated that Asura’s Wrath will be coming to North America on February 21st, 2012. This places its arrival just a week after both SSX and Ninja Gaiden III, the latter which will prompt some quick comparisons and competition as well.

Asura’s Wrath is an action game that focuses on a titanic visual presentation, and some fast-paced and explosive gameplay that caught the attention of many at this year’s E3 event. Speaking of which, we really enjoyed what we played at E3 (check out our impressions), and the most surprising thing is that despite it’s God of War-esque style, it does an excellent job of offering unique level of entertainment with Anime inspired visuals and combat techniques. It definitely seeks to impress, and it won’t be long before we see if it becomes the surprise blockbuster of 2012 that it has the potential to be.

A fellow journalist at the Tokyo Game Show looked at me like I was nuts when I said that Dragon’s Dogma looked like some kind of combination of Monster Hunter and Shadow of the Colossus. Upon playing it, however, I can say it definitely has some overlap with both of those games. The thrill of the hunt from Monster Hunter is there, and the monster battles, while not quite on the same scale as SotC, are an amazing thing to behold. The open-world gameplay has earned it a few comparisons to Bethesda RPG The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. The game overall feels like an Elder Scrolls title with an emphasis on Monster Hunter-type searches for giant beasts that might well be pulled out of SotC. See for yourself if that’s a recipe for success when it hits stores next year.

[<a

While many fans are excited to be able to use Kuro, Cole MacGrath, and Toro in Capcom’s next major fighting game release, those without Sony’s current-generation console or plans to pick-up the Vita have voiced their frustration.

After receiving some negative feedback for announcing three fighters exclusive to the Sony’s platforms, Christian Svensson, Corporate Officer at Capcom, <a

We spread the love around from time to time.

Games that are exclusive to a platform are one thing, but we’re beginning to see more and more additional content/DLC get the exclusive treatment, whether it be on release, or in the form of timed-exclusivity. It might be concerning, but it sure beats not being able to play the game at all. After all, seeing Cole MacGrath on anything but a PlayStation platform wouldn’t make much sense.

Look out for Street Fighter X Tekken and its three PlayStation exclusive characters when they roll out in March of next year.
<hr

These releases by Capcom have a shot at becoming the most popular downloadable titles of our generation, but since they’re digital-only, space can become a hindrance. Thankfully, we have the official space requirements available so you can make space for these two extremely well-received survival horror titles.

Resident Evil 4 HD will be releasing this coming Tuesday, and will take up a total of 3.3 GB of space, which sounds about right given the game’s DVD heritage. On the other hand, Code Veronica X HD clocks in at 2.4 GB, a considerably smaller size for a game that came out half a decade before Resident Evil 4.

Resident Evil will become the highlight of the PlayStation Store in the coming two weeks, so look out for its re-releases, and clear up 5.7 GB of space if you want to experience both in HD for their first time.
<hr

Each attack can be finished off in the air where his gun will be the finishing attack on the enemies. Another highlight shown is a new ability for Dante where the action will be temporarily slowed down in order to perform and perfect an execution. Check out both videos below:

<iframe

Gamers and fans of the series have been frustrated with the direction developer Ninja Theory chose for Dante – a usually bad-ass-looking character – with his hair and general look making him to be presented in an ‘emo’ way. However, publisher Capcom has promised that changes would be made to Dante and it looks like they’ve stayed true to their word if the new gameplay footage is anything to go by.

The Devil May Cry reboot is currently scheduled for a release in 2012.
<hr
