This epic journey propels DEATH through various light and dark realms as he tries to redeem his brother WAR, the horseman who was blamed for prematurely starting the Apocalypse in Darksiders.

The publisher provided more details on the sequel:

Features a dramatically larger world, full weapon and armour upgrade systems as well as bigger and more challenging dungeons and vast array of new enemies and bosses, Darksiders II strives to improve on every aspect of the original hit.

PSLS: Hi Mike, could you tell us a bit about yourself and the different games soundtracks have you been involved in?

MR: After attending Berklee College of Music in Boston, I returned to Los Angeles and got a job working as a Sound Effects Designer on games and feature films. I was doing that up until ten years ago, when I decided to roll the dice and follow my passion in becoming a composer. Since then, I’ve been fortunate enough to work on such great games like the God of War franchise, Darksiders and cartoon series’ like Ape Escape and Wow Wow Wubbzy!

PSLS: Which composers most influence your music (either contemporary or non-contemporary, and either game-related or not)?

MR: Bernard Hermann is definitely high on the list of composers that continue to inspire me. I love the story of how a young Martin Scorsese approached him to do a score for Taxi Driver. Of course at this point, Bernard Hermann is quite a legend having done Citizen Kane and all the great Hitchcocks, etc., upon hearing this he shoots back, “I don’t do films about taxi drivers.” And Scorsese said, “No, no, no, it’s not that type of film.” Scorsese eventually got him to watch a rough cut and of course, Bernard realized the genius behind it and gave it one of my all time favorite scores. He died shortly after completing it — what a film to go out on.

PSLS: When you are collaborating with several other composers in a game, how do you ensure the score flows from track to track? Is it difficult to mesh the styles of each composer?

MR: The God of War trilogy is really the only group of projects I’ve worked on that have involved a handful of composers. Thankfully, the team at Sony acted as the median between composers and developers. They make it so easy, giving us as much time as possible to focus on writing and being creative. They’re the ones that ensure consistency among composers for these situations.

PSLS: How did working with different game directors for each iteration of games from the same series change your approach to composing the music for each title?

MR: I think each game director had a slightly different approach for God of War, but ultimately the score that we defined for the first game continued to flourish as a sound throughout the series.

PSLS: Which is your favourite instrument to write for?

MR: That’s a tough question. There’s a tremendous amount of creative satisfaction writing for strings, brass, and choir – or any large group for that matter, because the life that musicians breathe into a score always goes beyond my expectations as a writer. That said, I really enjoy writing music to be played in non-traditional ways. For example, in the upcoming God of War: The Ghost of Sparta, you’ll hear a hammered dulcimer played with a bow with string bends, a didgeridoo that sounds like a valved instrument, and live cello and bass fx. There are also eerie effects with my voice that are beat-synced in software to add more creepiness to the track. For other recent projects, there were also trips to junkyards with my good friend and world-renown recordist Peter Sullivan to record percussion with hands, sticks, and mallets. Imagine finding an empty metallic cylindrical container that measures 100 feet long by 20 feet high and dropping a pair of microphones down it’s hatch in order to record percussion played on the outside surfaces. It’s the coolest thing ever.

PSLS: Is it harder to compose the soundtrack for a sequel than a new game? Does what you did for a previous game influence its sequel?

MR: That’s an interesting question. They each have their own set of challenges. Writing music for a sequel is tricky. While you do want to reference—to some extent—the previous title’s music, you also want to raise the bar and avoid sounding repetitive. The music for a sequel has to be able to stand on it’s own and, in some ways, kind of out-do the previous score.

When composing music for a new game, you have the opportunity to try different things out. It becomes a process of trial and error, discovering sounds that fit perfectly and others that don’t work at all. With the freedom to take the music in any direction, it is always a unique and exciting venture.

PSLS: Your work spans quite a range of styles; from the deep, ominous themes of the Underworld in God of War III and Darksiders to Elmo. But you seem to have a thing for the mythological third person action adventure genre. Do you prefer to work on those darker scores?

MR: I really enjoy that genre, but I can’t really say that I prefer one type of style to another. I will say that once you’ve scored a hit, you’re going to see more and more of the same opportunities. So, it’s wise to stay conscious of this and pick a variety of projects.

PSLS: We have been hearing a rash of musicians lately accidentally revealing details about upcoming games, even ones that have not been formally announced yet. Have you ever had a hard time keeping from revealing details of games that you are working on that are still unannounced, or that you can’t talk about yet?

MR: As much as I’d like to tell fans about what I’m working on, I know I’d be doing them and my clients a disservice. Being surprised by the finished product will have much more of an impact than playing through the game already knowing what to expect. Not to mention I’d be violating my NDA, haha.

PSLS: Technology has changed quite a bit from the time you began composing game music. Obviously things changed a lot from earlier consoles like the NES to more “modern” consoles like the PlayStation family. From your perspective, were there any things that you couldn’t do musically because of hardware limitations on the PS2 vs. the PS3?

MR: Back when we used consoles as samplers, we had to create instrument sets in the hardware and trigger them with MIDI. I got into the business during the days of Super Nintendo, and hung on for the ride through Sega Genesis, Sega CD, Sega Saturn, PlayStation 1,2,and 3, and Xbox and the Xbox 360. The process was limiting, but it taught us all certain skill sets – most importantly the attention to detail needed to overcome these limitations. So, back in the day it was more time consuming and tougher to pull off a score that sounded big and live – especially with under 1 megabyte of RAM. Yeah, that’s right… I said it… MEGAbyte.

PSLS: Do you personally play video games, and if so what is your favorite game?

MR: I believe in knowing your market and in this case, I’m lucky the products are so much fun. I got back into playing games again last year, and really enjoyed Uncharted 2, InFamous, and Darksiders. I also enjoyed playing through God of War 3… and can’t wait to get my hands on Red Dead Redemption. It’s important to play games in order to write for them. Not only from a technical point of view, but there are just so many great game scores out there.

PlayStation LifeStyle would like to thank Mike Reagan and Top Dollar PR for taking the time to hold the interview. Stay tuned to PSLS for more PlayStation news, reviews and interviews.

Heavy Rain will be bringing about a storm of satisfied gamers with its dramatic experience. The PlayStation 3 features strong language, violence and sex; including full male and female nudity, the type of content that gets games banned from being released in certain countries. Despite this, Heavy Rain has been cleared for nearly all countries it is releasing, all but one.

The United Arab Emirates has banned Heavy Rain in the country, the decision voted for by the National Media Council. The ban may of been imposed due to the game’s nudity and explicit scenes.

Sony confirmed the exclusion of their PS3 exclusive in UAE via a statement to Kotaku:

The UAE’s National Media Council (NMC) has banned Heavy Rain on PlayStation3. Heavy Rain has an 18+ PEGI rating and has been conceived from the earliest stages as a genuinely adult experience.

This means that it deals with strong content including blood and nudity, but treats this content in a mature and sensitive manner. The game is not intentionally controversial or sensationalist, and all the themes and content are consistent with what consumers would expect to see in a mainstream Hollywood thriller.

Heavy Rain is not the only title to be banned this year in the UAE, though; THQ’s Darksiders was also restricted in the country due to its violent gameplay. Electronic Arts decided to not even unleash Dante’s hell in to the country as the firm believed Dante’s Inferno would receive the same fate as others. It doesn’t stop there though, every installment in the God Of War series have been prohibited and it’s not difficult to figure out way.

Heavy Rain will be released tomorrow in North America and Europe will receive the Origami Killer from 24th February onwards.

[The demo contains the entire first dungeon encounter from the game, the sprawling Twilight Cathedral. The level is said to provide a representation of the key facets of the game, and is set to contains puzzles, equipment and two boss battles, one with the monstrous demon Jailer and the other with the savage bat-winged Tiamat.

David Adams, General Manager of Vigil Games commented:

“We are really pumped to be bringing a playable demo for Darksiders to Xbox 360 and PlayStation3. We really wanted to give gamers a true idea of the variety of gameplay that the game offers and so rather than just making a standard 20-minute demo version of the first few levels, we decided to give away this massive level and reveal the true essence of the game.”

The demo will release on February 25th, will you play it? Whether it’s gameplay, story, pricing, or business practices, sometimes the industry needs a little friendly fire from gamers to keep it in line.

Other times, developers look down their sights and fire off a well placed bullet right into our thrilled heads. This is Josh & Cameron, and today we have a special guest for Headshots & Friendly Fire.

A Bit of Friendly Fire

Yakuza Releases March 9th

I know what you’re thinking: Is Sega evil, or just stupid? Sega didn’t want to release Yakuza 3 over here, and they don’t want to release Yakuza 4 over here, either. So the question is: are they deliberately releasing Yakuza 3 on the same day as FFXIII so that it doesn’t sell well and they can justify not bringing Yakuza 4 to the west? Could Sega not realize that they are pitting Yakuza 3 against one of the biggest games of the year? Judging from Sega’s past history with marketing, it would be typical for Sega to screw up the marketing for Yakuza 3. Sega needs to decide if they want to support games in the US and Europe, or if they want to be a Japan-only company.

Still no Trophies?

I’ll be the first guy to tell you that trophies shouldn’t matter if the game is good enough. That still holds true, but in a game market where trophies are such a sought-after commodity, there is really no excuse not to patch a game for trophies, then turn around and complain about lack of sales. Every time a for sale article goes up on Valkyria Chronicles, one of the top 10 PS3 games to date, you will always find complainers about no trophy patch. While I still think everyone should play this game, I can’t help but get upset at SEGA over not patching this and getting themselves more sales. Another game in need of some trophies just to make it playable is 50 Cent Blood on the Sand. I rented the game to gain trophies and have fun with a friend (no offline co-op, another story) and alas, no trophies. The game even got patched in Japan, where I don’t even think 50 has any fans. Add replay value, guys, and make an extra buck or two, though it might be a bit late for both of those.

I like him...just not this year.

Batman 2 Preorder Already Available

Batman: Arkham Asylum has been on the market for less time than Conan O’Brien has been on the Tonight Show, and yet pre-orders for the second game are already available. In the last H&F, I said that Batman: Arkham Asylum 2 needs to have a long develpment cycle, and not just be pushed out the door. Now, it’s starting to look like my fears may be coming true. RockSteady, don’t let success go to your head.

Built around Co-op, but no Offline?

I mentioned 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand earlier and its lack of offline co-op. Why do developers decide to make a game that is supposed to be played with a friend and yet fail to make the game offline co-op compatible? I know online is where it’s at, and more and more people are going online to join up with friends, but every so often, people like to play a game together while sitting in the same room. The only reason a lot of these games are rented is for just that feature, and when it’s not made available, it leaves gamers feeling frustrated.
<p

THQ has revealed that the mystery code includes “a digital Hellbook disc featuring Darksiders art, videos, and other awesome stuff!”, oh, and a free copy of Red Faction: Guerrilla. Yes, THQ surprised us all by announcing yesterday that this mystery code does in fact grant you access to a free copy of Red: Faction Guerrilla.

If you have the code, you’ll have to go to this link, and put in the code where it appropriately says, “Promo Code”. When that’s done, you will no longer have to pay the $39.99 for Red Faction. However, you will still pay for the shipping and handling. id="more-61683">We can only imagine what Darksiders would have been like with War being accompanied by Death, Strife, and Fury. More originally planned features have been released in an interview in GameInformer magazine. War was originally a child with a robot arm, and before the game was called Darksiders, the team at Vigil Games toyed around with the names Z.O.O.D. and Doomrunners. Looking at those names, Darksiders does seem to best fit the bill. For those who have yet to check it out, you can view our review of <a

The backdrop of the game is post-Armageddon, and one of the Four Horsemen has been set up to take the blame for cosmic events he did not put into motion. Does Vigil Games’ debut game deliver the goods or does it fall short in the crowded genre?

In the world of Darksiders, the balance between Heaven, mankind, and Hell is preserved through the Charred Council. The council’s elite warriors are the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. You are War, and you receive the call that the end time has arrived, only to find out the call was premature. Earth is in turmoil as the forces of Heaven battle the legions of Hell. Humanity has been has been wiped from the vast wasteland and War seems to have been set up to take the fall for this, but he is not about to take it lying down. Do not expect any lessons in theology, but the story is very entertaining. Things play out very much like Greek mythology, and various plot twists will save some of they mystery until the end.

When you first start, War’s abilities will quickly be gimped, and you are saddled with a babysitter called “the Watcher.” With Heaven and Hell looking to blame you for the apocalyptic blunder, there aren’t many friends around. Vulgrim the merchant will always welcome a visit from War, provided War is looking to spend some souls on his powerful wares. Vulgrim will pop up often in the destroyed world and also provides quick passage via the ancient Serpent Holes.

Combat combos are limited and must be purchased one at a time, but the control scheme allows for some unique weapon variety. The sword and scythe are available via the face buttons, while a missile weapon or a bladed boomerang can be tossed out with a flick of a shoulder. This allows War to fire out a long range attack, then dash in with a flurry of sword and scythe strikes. Along the way, this can be further mixed with up to four magical spells to maximize War’s ass-kicking.
<hr
