Square Enix Intimidated by the Colossal Scope of a Final Fantasy VII Remake

It’s no secret that Final Fantasy VII is the most requested video game remake in history. Spin-offs have been released, discussions have been plenty, but nothing has been enough to calm the millions of fans who love one of the most well-received titles in history, but simply can’t stand the graphics anymore. Although it seems otherwise, Square Enix is fully aware of the demand, but have no plans to give in.

Square Enix Producer Yoshinori Kitase has the following to say in regards to a FFVII remake:

Graphically they [Final Fantasy games] weren’t as advanced as they are now, but there were lots of towns and worlds and cities and whatever. So if we were to recreate the same kind of game – sequel or not – with the same volume, but give it a much higher level of graphical quality, it would us take three times, four times, even ten times longer to make such a game. So making a sequel for an old game would be a lot more challenging.

Instead of such a potentially industry-shaking title, the RPG kings at Square Enix are interested in quicker rewards, such as the upcoming Final Fantasy XIII-2. As you may have noticed, games have become a lot shorter over the past few years, mostly because of the amount of work required to make a game look visually “modern”. Final Fantasy VII was a gargantuan game that you could easily sink over a hundred hours into and still not see everything it has to offer. Taking an experience like that, along with its massive world, and recreating it with HD visuals is definitely an intimidating project, but if anyone can do it, Square Enix can.

Final Fantasy VII is my favorite game of all-time, and I think at some point Square Enix will give in and develop such a game. Final Fantasy III and Final Fantasy IV have both been recreated for Nintendo’s DS platform, which makes it seem more possible barring the fact that DS hardware isn’t particularly powerful. If anything, Square Enix is waiting for the right moment to make it happen. This includes both a console that has a massive install base, and hardware that can make the remake as captivating as possible. The Final Fantasy VII tech demo shown during the PlayStation 3′s original announcement might give you hope, but if anything the successor to the PS3 has a better shot.

The PlayStation Store’s Top Downloads has been updated and this week has a few surprises as well as a few no brainers to the update. The GTAIV Episodes from Liberty City make their debuts at 2 and 4 on the list while Final Fight makes its triumphant return at the 3 spot. Final Fantasy VII and VIII continue their stay on the list as does Marvel vs. Capcom 2. Check out the full list below.

Final Fantasy Tops PSP Store Downloads

In the most recent episode of PlayStation Pulse, the bi-weekly program that highlights PlayStation games, revealed a Top 10 list for the games gamers downloaded most onto their PlayStation Portable, for 2010. Leading the ranks is a 13 year old game that just won’t die.

According to the list, the critically acclaimed Final Fantasy VII tops the list. Coming in at a close second is its brother, Final Fantasy VIII. Other notables include God of War: Chains of Olympus, Gran Turismo and LittleBigPlanet.

Final Fantasy VIII Making Its Way On to Europe PSN

It has been a long wait for European fans who have wanted Final Fantasy VIII to arrive on the PlayStation Store, but Sony has recently confirmed that the wait will soon be over for the much anticipated RPG.

SCEE has confirmed that Final Fantasy VIII will be available on the PlayStation Store on February 4.

Mike Kebby from the PS Store team made countless fans happy:

The emulation process for our region is longer than the others unfortunately, but it’s all confirmed for the 4th of Feb now. FF8 is coming on the 4th of February, this is a confirmed date now.

There is no price confirmed yet, but expect it to be within a price range for Final Fantasy VII ($9.99).

Vagrant Story Tells All in 2010

PSOne titles have been slowly finding their way onto the PlayStation Network and it looks like a couple of big RPG’s will be following suit, though it won’t be until 2010.

Recently in the comments section over on the Official European PlayStation Blog, Mike Kebby revealed that Vagrant Story would be coming to the European Store, however that it would not be until 2010. It won’t be alone as he also stated that Final Fantasy VIII and Final Fantasy Tactics will also see a release next year. These are some great pick ups for anyone looking to reminisce or for those few that may have missed these the first go around.

FFVIII Being Summoned to EU PS Store

To mark the Tokyo Game Show, Japan’s biggest games conference, Square Enix, Japan’s biggest third-party developer, released the PSOne classic game Final Fantasy VIII on the Japanese PlayStation Store. FF VIII, the fastest selling FF game of all time, was released in 1999 to rather positive reviews, and, while many suggest that the game lies in the shadow of its predecessor, FF VII, it still remains a highly desirable game. Therefore, it was seen as a shame that the game was only released on the Japanese PS Store, with only the usual “no comment” given regarding an overseas release.

Now, barely a week later, Mike Kebby, SCEE PlayStation Store Team member let slip:

FVIII should be coming soonish.

With the game now confirmed for Europe the likelihood of an American release is all the more probable, which should come as great news for Final Fantasy fans.
