Kratos Is The God of Sales

God of War III has only been out for just over a week and it has already hit a large sales milestone. Kratos has struck a chord with gamers and critics alike. Ushering in strong review scores and kudos from fans of the series everywhere.

Santa Monica Studio‘s masterpiece has now sold over 1.1 million copies since its release according to the videogame statistics addicts over at vgchartz.com. 700,000 of those copies were sold in North America, while 400,000 were sold in Europe and other regions (not Japan yet). This makes it the fastest-selling entry in the franchise, and sets Kratos well on his way to outdo even himself. LTD (that’s Lifetime-To-Date) sales of the original God of War is around 4 million, while God of War II has sold ~3.3 million units. The PSP entry Chains of Olympus has sold 2.4 million copies, and the God of War Collection, which is only out in North America, has sold around 800,000 copies. The entire franchise has now sold over 11.6 million copies across three platforms.

February 27th

2006 – Sony Japan announces the expansion of the PlayStation Spot wireless service for PSP.
2007 - SCE announces FORMULA ONE Championship Edition for the PlayStation 3.
2007 – SCE announces MLB 07 The Show for PS2 and PSP.
2009 – Guerilla Games’ technical achievement Killzone 2 is released for the PlayStation 3 for the US and UK audiences, massive jaw-dropping ensues as the world is “Killzowned.”
2009 – Rumors begin to surface that Ready At Dawn Studios is developing a follow-up to God of War: Chains of Olympus title for the PSP.
2009 – Sony Corporation announces a major reorganization and a new management team. The corporate giant made moves to fundamentally reorganize the company’s electronics and game businesses to improve profitability and strengthen competitiveness in the midst of the continued global economic crisis.

February 28th

2000 – Newsweek’s March cover features the “The Amazing PlayStation 2″. They have an in depth look at the new console, which can play video games, DVD movies, access the Internet and how Sony will transform high-tech fun.
2006 – Criterion Games’ console shooter debut, Black, is released for the American PS2 audience, the term “gun porn” is born.

February 29th

2000 – Eidetic’s Syphon Filter 2 is released and continues the adventures of Gabe Logan on the PS1.
2000 – Hot Shots Golf 2 (Everybody’s Golf 2) was released to the United States for the PlayStation.
2008 – Capcom’s Lost Planet: Extreme Condition debuts on the PlayStation 3 with mixed reviews.

March 1st

1997 – SingleTrac’s JetMoto is released in the UK for the PlayStation 1.
1999 – CNN correctly speculates Sony’s incoming announcement of the PlayStation 2, which occurred the following day.
2002 – Sony Computer Entertainment confirms the release date of the highly anticipated Final Fantasy XI (PS2) for Japan. Hitting store shelves May 16th, this two disc package revolutionized the gaming world, with its ability to instantly connect with thousands of players, worldwide.
2002 – Square’s Final Fantasy VI is released to the European marketplace for PlayStation 1.
2005 – Capcom’s Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening (PS2) the highly anticipated followup to Devil May Cry 2 was released to American audiences.

March 2nd

1999 – Sony Computer Entertainment announced the completion of its research and development project to design the successor to the PlayStation.
2005 - To differentiate what content is meant for children and what is meant for teens, the Entertainment Software Rating Board creates the “E10+” rating. Almost instantly, all hockey games are given this rating.

March 3rd

2003 – Konami’s MGS2: Substance is released to the American PS2 audience.
2006 – Criterion Games’ console shooter debut, Black is released for the Asian PS2 audience.
2009 - 2k Sports’ Major League Baseball 2k9 hits American store shelves.
2009 - Sony’s MLB 09 : The Show hits the baseball diamond with its American release.

March 4th

2000 – Sony officially releases their highly anticipated successor to the PlayStation, the PlayStation 2, to the Japanese market. Total day one sales were an astounding 980,000 units. The PlayStation 2 would go on to become the highest selling console in history. Unfortunately, North American and European audiences would have to wait a few more months, until supplies were great enough to meet demand.
2005 – Hideo Kojima’s critically acclaimed Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is released to the European PS2 marketplaces.
2007 - The New York Times publishes a lengthy interview with Sony CEO Howard Stringer, in which explicit details about Ken Kutagari’s “removal” from the Sony Board of Director’s in November of the previous year, are revealed. Stringer says it was the “removal of an uncooperative executive.” Kutagari becomes chairman of SCEI.
2008 – Ready at Dawn Studios PSP hit God of War: Chains of Olympus is released upon the American marketplace.

March 5th

1996 – Psygnosis’ Wipeout is released for the Sega Saturn roughly six months after the PS1 version.
1998 – Wipeout 2097 is released for the Sega Saturn roughly six months after the PS1 version.
2004 – Zipper’s SOCOM II: U.S. Navy SEALs is released for the European PS2 marketplace.
2009 – Guerilla Games’ Killzone: Liberation for PSP is released in the PlayStation Store.

God of War: Chains of Olympus Came Close To Being A Side-Scroller

Developers of God Of War: Chains Of Olympus, Ready at Dawn has revealed thier plan, which was obviously later scrapped, to bring the hit franchise God of War into the two-dimensional world.

Lead level designer Dana Jan has revealed to IndustryGamers the developers briefly considered God of War: Chains of Olympus in a side-scroller rather than three dimensional title.

There were early discussions of making Chains of Olympus a side-scroller rather than 3D in case the experience couldn’t be fully realized on a handheld,” said lead level designer Dana Jan.

This really fueled us to prove that [3D PSP GOW] could be done.
Games like God of War don’t usually translate well when they are brought to handhelds. The gameplay, graphics, animation, sound, etc. have a tendency to ‘differ’ from their console counterparts.

Luckily for PlayStation Portable gamers, Krato’s mission on the PSP took the sought after 3D route, and ended up being a spectacularly constructed title.

After yet another dreadful work week has past, gamers like to kick back and unwind by popping our favorite games into our favorite console. We here at PlayStation LifeStyle are no different. Find out what the PSLS staff will be playing this weekend, and share your very own weekend gaming playlist.

I guess I can go ahead and start this off. My name is Cameron Teague and I am the Social Media Manager here at PSLS. This weekend I plan to finally beat Uncharted 2 on crushing and pop my Platinum Cherry and I want to thank everyone who has encouraged me to keep going! Should be starting my review for LEGO Indiana Jones 2 as well as Kenka Bancho: Badass Rumble for the PSP, on my newly borrowed PSP, thanks Christian!! And if i find time some Ratchet & Clank, Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops and God of War: Chains of Olympus. So let’s dive in and see just what everyone here at PSLS is playing.

I finally picked up a copy of Modern Warfare 2, so I’m going to try to finish the campaign this weekend (likely one night haha) as well as go online with it. I’m also planning on making progress towards Platinums in both Uncharted 2 and Ratchet & Clank. I might pop in LittleBigPlanet on my PS3 to get me ready for its PSP version which should be in my mailbox in a couple days. Speaking of my PSP, I also need to make some actual music in Beaterator!

I am going to be rank and leaderboard grinding on Modern Warfare 2 to catch up for the few days I took off this week. Somewhere in between MW2 binges I’m going to try to play some Assassin’s Creed II or some God of War collection. Then of course there is the ever-present Monster Hunter Freedom Unite in my PSPgo beckoning me to the hunt…

I’m going to be trying to complete MW2′s Spec Ops, get some more trophies in Eyepet, play Assassin’s Creed II if I pick it up, possibly play the GOW collection if I can get a copy here, and maybe something off the PSN store for my PSP. So not that much this week.

Last night the 12th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards were held in Las Vegas, and it was hosted by comedian and avid gamer Jay Mohr. A lot of excellent games took home awards, but Little Big Planet owned the competition and took home 8 awards including the Overall Game of the Year.

LBP has been widely praised for its innovation and gameplay, and it is nice to see it getting the recognition it deserves at these award shows. Sales have been slow going, but hopefully these awards will transition into more sales for this excellent title.

Other notables are God of War: Chains of Olympus best handheld; Fallout 3 Best RPG; Mirror’s Edge best adventure game; and Dead Space for best Action game.
