Modern Warfare 2 is Coming to PSN Next Week

Following this week’s release of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare on the PlayStation Network, Activision will be releasing Modern Warfare 2 on the PSN next week.

Six minutes into the PS blog’s podcast, the game is confirmed for PSN, although no price point has been given. COD 4 was released a few days ago for $19.99, so this title will likely have a similar price.

A few days ago, Sony changed the changed the policy for downloading games on PSN store down from five systems to two systems, upsetting many multi-console owners. However, if the recent releases of digital version of full PS3 games (such as Red Dead Redemption, Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One and Call of Duty) are any indication, this can only mean good things for people who support digital distribution. Come on Sony, release that Killzone 3 multiplayer already!

Infinity Ward: We’ve Moved Beyond The MW2 Engine

Although a massive proportion of what Modern Warfare 3 is all about (including the game’s ending) was leaked, Activision acted swiftly (and smartly) to capitalize on the leak and officially confirm the game in the form of three teaser trailers. The main developer behind the game, acclaimed studio Infinity Ward, has now stated they’ve moved beyond the Modern Warfare 2 engine for the third installment in the franchise.

Infinity Ward’s Creative Strategist, Robert Bowling, recently responded to a fan asking about the shooter’s engine via Twitter. Bowling said:

We haven’t gone into detail on the engine yet but we’ve moved beyond the MW2 engine and added a lot of cool stuff for MW3.

However, Bowling had previously said a few months back that a new engine for the Call of Duty franchise is unlikely, so it most likely means that the engine will simply be an upgraded version of their old tech:

Someone just needs to spend the $ and construct a new engine for the CoD franchise… Ground up. That would be counter productive. An engine takes years and years to develop and get right.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is currently scheduled to release on November 8th, 2011. The hotly anticipated shooter will be formally unveiled tonight during the NBA Western Conference Finals around 6pm PST. We’ll put that up as soon as it goes live.

Modern Warfare 2 Anti-Hack Patch Proves Effective, Online Play Clean as a Whistle

Its only been a few weeks since Infinity Ward released the latest patch for Modern Warfare 2 to combat hackers and modders in order to clean-up the online portion of the game and actually make it playable again. We’ve spent quite a bit of time online with this latest patch, and here’s what we’ve found.

Admittedly, it was very easy to be skeptical of Infinity Ward’s latest endeavor to rid the Modern Warfare 2 online world of folks who essentially made the online portion of the game unplayable, especially since hacking, in the form of challenge lobbies, has been around since the beginning. Throughout the past two weeks we’ve put in some serious time on Modern Warfare 2, and have discovered that this patch, believe it or not, actually works. We played in dozens and dozens of online matches, and hackers were essentially non-existent. We did run into a few modified lobbies which seemed to be confined to the search and destroy portions of the game, but, other than that, the other online modes remained completely clean.

Gamers can now consider Modern Warfare 2′s online mode to be completely playable again.

Modern Warfare 2 to Receive Major Security Patch Soon

If you’ve read it on the web, or experienced it in-game, then you’re probably aware of the fact that playing Modern Warfare 2 online is, currently, nothing but one big load of frustration. Infinity Ward is well aware of this and has just announced that a security update is on its way.

Creative Strategist Robert Bowling has announced that Infinity Ward (or what’s left of them) will be releasing a new security update across all major platforms in order to combat the rampant cheating which has plagues the online portion of Modern Warfare 2.

The latest patch for Modern Warfare 2 has finished production and is now going through internal quality assurance. This new title update will address security issues that have affected online play.
We plan to release this update for all platforms (Playstation 3, Xbox 360, and PC). No release date is set at this time. Once an ETA is established, it will be posted here.
In addition to the security updates, this patch will also address a small geo exploit on the map Fuel, which players exploited in order to get inside a rock on the outskirts of the map.

It’s great to finally see a fix coming for what can only be described as a crippled online arena, as there are still many players which seem to prefer the style of the Infinity Ward titles over those developed by Treyarch. Activision: Treyarch Not Recognized Enough For Modern Warfare 2

Many gamers still hold the idea that developer Treyarch is still the little brother of Infinity Ward when it comes to creating the Call of Duty games. Publisher Activsion is trying to set the record straight and give the Black Ops developer the recognition that they deserve.

Activision CEO Bobby Kotick said that Treyarch played an important role when working with Infinity Ward on Modern Warfare 2‘s online component. He also stated that the substandard view of Treyarch is simply “unfair.”

“That’s an unfair view of Treyarch. You know it’s not really an objective view. Treyarch contributed so significantly to the multiplayer technology that’s in Modern Warfare 2 and they didn’t really get the credit for that.”

Russian Gamer Brings the War to Modern Warfare 2

In spite of Modern Warfare’s monumental success, there are still some people who will strongly disagree with the masses. And then there are some who go overboard to tell us how they really feel.

One particular Russian gamer really, I mean REALLY, despises Modern Warfare 2. Without flinching, this guy literally pours his hate onto the game and then makes sure it won’t come back to life by burning it.

Perhaps we need to teach this guy a thing or two about eBay. Then maybe he could invest that into his beloved Black Ops that he expressed in picking up.

Oh wait, is that the Xbox 360 Limited Edition? Carry on, then…

Modern Warfare 3 to be a Sledgehammer Affair Says Analyst

The fallout between publisher Activision and developer Infinity Ward is one of the largest industry disasters in recent memory. When a game like Modern Warfare 2 makes millions of dollars in profit and in-turn half the staff of the development team is let go only months later, you know something went terribly, terribly wrong. Rumors have surfaced that the creators of the Call of Duty series will have nothing to do with Modern Warfare 3, and one Analyst has predicted that Activision’s latest acquisition, Sledgehammer games, will instead take over the developing duties this time around.

For those of you unfamiliar with Sledgehammer games, both Glen Schofield and Michael Condrey from EA’s Visceral Games left the company to take over at Activision’s latest creation around November 2009. It was originally believed that the team was working on a third-person shooter for the franchise, however it was later confirmed that it will indeed be a FPS, which Janco Partners’ Mike Hickey thinks will be none other than Modern Warfare 3.

We believe Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will be released in fiscal ’11, likely developed by Sledgehammer Games, and could sell in excess of +18 million units.

Excess of 18 million units sold? That would be quite the feat, and it makes you wonder what Infinity Ward has cooking in the kitchen.

Modern Warfare 2 Stimulus and Resurgence Packs Gets Temporary Discount

Think the Stimulus and Resurgence downloadable content packs for Modern Warfare 2 are too expensive? Fear not, Sony has slashed the price by 50% for a limited time.

Sony has decided to cut down the prices for both map packs available for the game by 50% until next week. Both the DLC packs adds five new maps to players’ selection; three new maps and two remakes of the original Modern Warfare’s maps in each pack. Manager of the European PlayStation Store, Mike Kebby, confirmed the news via his Twitter account:

“Modern Warfare 2 Stimulus and Resurgence Packs are discounted (by 50%) on PSN Store for the next week. Move out…GO GO GO!”

Modern Warfare 2 Becomes Best-Selling Game in UK

Well this is a shock, isn’t it? Modern Warfare 2 has smashed the sales for Nintendo’s Dr Kawashima’s Brain Training and Infinity Ward’s controversial shooter has taken over to become the United Kingdom’s best-selling game off all time. Who doubted this to happen, though? Modern Warfare 2 has been sitting comfortably on the UK charts ever since its release back last November.

Modern Warfare 2 achieves this particular milestone – out of many milestones, let’s not forget - after just 41 weeks, which only three weeks saw the game slip outside the top 10 within the charts. Activision’s biggest entertainment launch in history takes over Brain Training – which took 36 months to overtake earlier record holder Rockstar’s GTA: San Andreas.

Modern Warfare 2 was released in November last year and has since never shown of sign of sales dipping.

Modern Warfare 2 Stole Level From Homefront?

In today’s world we see many companies ‘borrow’ ideas from each other, and the gaming industry is no exception. For example when Sony implemented trophies after getting the idea from Microsoft achievements, or how Microsoft copied Nintendo’s Miis avatars. Well it now seems that the well-known Infinity Ward might have nabbed an idea for a level from the Homefront demo presented at E3 2009.

Talking in last months issue of PSM3, Dave Votypka, head of THQ Kaos Studios has a hunch that this renowned and world wide famous shooter has ‘borrowed’ elements from the studios upcoming apocalyptic game. Dave identified exactly which element from their tittle were duplicated in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

“The level in MW where you’re using the laser-pointer to guide the Striker (combat vehicle). We showed that mechanic at last year’s E3, then it was in their game. We were thinking ‘Hmm, where did you get that idea from…’ But, other than that, we think our concept is so unique we don’t really see comparisons with other shooters.”,

Check out the E3 2009 reveal of Homefront below and compare it to Modern Warfare 2‘s mission ‘Exodus’. There is no denying the fact that two levels are distinctively similar.

Nevertheless Modern Warfare 2 is one of the most successful arcade style shooter on the PS3 and whether or not they have ripped of one level from a title that still isn’t on the market won’t change their sales figures or their fan base.

Bowling Says You Won’t Ever Pay For MW2 or CoD Online

Rumors have been circulating the Internet regarding Activision eventually charging for their highly-popular multiplayer titles. Now, Infinity Ward’s Creative Strategist Robert Bowling has confirmed that the rumors are false as he has stated that no one will ever pay to play Call of Duty or Modern Warfare 2 online.

Speaking on his Twitter account, Bowling tweeted:

Modern Warfare 2 subscription plan rumors going around. For the record, nobody has to pay to play COD or MW2 multiplayer, nor will they.

Michael Pachter recently discussed that games like Call of Duty, where the multiplayer component shines, should be subscription based for users. Well, looks like that won’t happen now. Ever.

Looks like this is indeed the same case for Call of Duty: Black Ops, as Treyarch’s community manager just tweeted the following:

No, you will not have to ‘Pay to Play’ #CODBlackOps Multiplayer either. Rumor -> Squashed.

There you have it, then. You won’t be paying to player multiplayer for a Call of Duty game any time soon. Rejoice gamers.

Black Ops Beating Modern Warfare 2′s Pre-Orders

Modern Warfare 2 was one of the most pre-ordered games in history with various online retailers claiming that over 150 people were pre-ordering the shooter every minute. Black Ops laughs at you, Modern Warfare 2. An analyst has confirmed that Treyarch and Activision’s latest Call of Duty title, CoD: Black Ops, is comfortably beating Modern Warfare 2 in terms of pre-orders.

Pacific Crest Securities analyst Evan Wilson has stated that sources within retail has confirmed Treyarch’s latest shooter is steadily beating Modern Warfare 2 in regards to pre-orders, despite being months away from its anticipated release. Wilson also bumped up his sales estimates of the game saying it will go on to sell 12 million units from his previous 10 million estimate.

Although it may be good as far as pre-orders go, the analyst holds a belief that due to various reasons Black Ops won’t beat Modern Warfare 2 in terms of sales. “Competition, weaker marketing, and the Infinity Ward situation” is the reason he outed. Still, it sure would take one hell of a game to beat the largest entertainment launch in history, I would suppose.

Call of Duty: Black Ops is currently scheduled for a release on November 9th, 2010.

EA Declare Bad Company 2 Won’t Beat MW2 This Year

Before its release, Electronic Arts stated that they plan to beat the highly-successful Modern Warfare 2 with DICE’s Battlefield: Bad Company 2 in many aspects. One thing EA could not catch up with is the astonishing sales for Modern Warfare 2 with Activision’s shooter becoming the best entertainment launch in history. EA have now admitted that they won’t be able to outsell Modern Warfare 2 this year.

VP and UK GM Keith Ramsdale told website MCV:

It’s been great. The press reaction has been focused largely on how good the multiplayer is. It’s now recognised as genre defining, and the way the market’s going.
Are we going to beat Modern Warfare sales this year with any single title? No. But do we have a long-term goal of taking more market share or possibly growing the market? Yes.

Before Battlefield: Bad Company 2 released, EA weren’t shy to speak up about their direct competition stating that Bad Company 2′s online component is better than Modern Warfare 2′s.

Bad Company 2 racked up an impressive 5 million units sold last month with 2 million being sold in its first month of release back in March.

Celebrate Memorial Weekend with Double MW2 Experience

Even months after Modern Warfare 2′s release, gamers are still furiously playing the game’s often publicized multiplayer mode. Infinity Ward is making sure gamers are attached to the game not only with the first round of DLC, but with sporadic double XP weekends. Posting on his Twitter account, Infinity Ward’s Creative Strategist, Robert Bowling has given details on the game’s next double XP weekend.

Beginning Friday, gamers will be able to acquire double experience for the entire Memorial Day weekend. Yup, that means not the typical two-day double XP sprint, but now a full three-day marathon!

As stated by Robert Bowling on Twitter:

Memorial Day weekend is coming up, which means 3-DAY WEEKEND! We’ll be flipping on double XP for Modern Warfare 2 on all platforms!

2010 FIFA World Cup Still Dominating in UK Charts

Last week saw EA Sports’ latest World Cup game, 2010 FIFA World Cup, shoot its way to the top of the UK charts. Now, the football title continues to dominate.

EA Sports’ 2010 FIFA World Cup is still sitting comfortably in first position. Infinity Ward’s Modern Warfare 2 makes its way back into third while Avalanche’s Just Cause 2 occupies 10th position.
