BlackBox to Head Development on Next Need for Speed Title

While Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit hasn’t even come out yet, EA is already talking about another Need for Speed title set for next year, but this time around production will be handed off to EA development studio BlackBox.

BlackBox is probably best known in the racing world for their work on the Need for Speed Underground series which remains a fan-favorite till this day. EA Europe VP Patrick Soderlund stated the following:

“We want to reach a mass-market audience, and Hot Pursuit is a more mass-market appealing product than Shift,”
“We want to come back with an action adventure type of product on an annual basis, but from a developer that’s been working on it for a couple of years.”
“Maybe there are two or three developers going at it every second year. Then, when the market permits and when we feel ready, we’ll come up with Shift versions as well.”

Unless EA can manage to crank out a good Need for Speed title each year, it’s going to be tough to support this sort of development cycle. Ever since EA hired Criterion to help develop the newest iteration in the series, a Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit revamp, things are looking good, and shows that if a good developer puts significant time into a title that it will convey a sense of quality along with awesome gameplay. Let’s hope this latest NFS title isn’t just bait to bring us back into the fold and then overwhelm us with mediocre variations year-after-year, because we should all remember just how bad ProStreet was.

Electronic Arts released their Q2 earnings yesterday and among all the big hitters like FIFA and Madden was surprise performer Need for Speed Shift.

The 13th installment in the Need for Speed series, Shift has sold an impressive 2.5 million copies and counting across 5 platforms. These are great numbers for Shift, which has taken the leap from car chases and police pursuit to more focused driving simulation.

PS3 Review – Need for Speed: Shift

My black BMW M3 rips through the carnage of smoke, debris, and overturned vehicles, barely missing the barrier wall, all the while skidding through the tight turn in perfect drifting form. As I escape unharmed, my adrenaline dissipates and the satisfaction of seeing my score bar light up with hundreds of points makes the situation all the more classic. This is what racing should be like, and yet it comes from the most unlikely racing series of all time: Need for Speed.

While the Need for Speed franchise has morphed multiple times over the past 15 years, touching on everything from traditional arcade racing to mod culture, from hot pursuit situations to open world environments. But circuit racing is something that has typically been reserved for the Gran Turismo and Forza Motorsport franchises as of late. This is why the approach employed by EA and series newcomer Slightly Mad Studios is so daring; it takes the franchise into a completely new direction. Gone are the open world settings of Pro Street and Underground, or even the fantasy settings of prior titles like Hot Pursuit 2. The focus of Shift is circuit racing, and the developers were savvy enough to make the game very accessible and easy to pick up, despite the more realistic approach.
The presentation quality of this game is absolutely spectacular. The menus are slick, the layout is stylish, and even the loading screens are exciting to sit through due to the incredible audio work going on. There’s really never a dull moment in this game, and that’s outside of the actual gameplay. The game is split up into separate tiers, which contain specific ranks of cars to purchase and racing challenges to choose from. The first tier acts as a great warm up, with low horsepower rides and races that only ask for the bare minimum of your racing skills (or lack thereof). But NFS: Shift quickly ratches up the speed, intensity, and difficulty level afterwards. And thankfully, the team had enough forsight to make the challenges fairly easy to complete, despite the steady increase in difficulty.
Every race has a core set of stars to earn, which depend on your placement within the race. For instance, earning 3rd place will score you one star, second place two stars, and first place three stars. And on top of that, the game throws secondary goals to complete within every race, which range from racking up a certain amount of points to spinning out opponents. The stars you earn are permanent, which means that races can be completed multiple times if you got all the secondary goals, but didn’t quite make first place. Or worse yet, got third place and scored absolutely no secondary goals. It’s a brilliant system that allows skilled drivers to quickly advance, but manages to not punish those who are still getting used to the game.

PlayStation Store ‘Shifts’ Onto Xbox 360

Need for Speed: Shift, the first title from developer Slightly Mad Studios, has come under recent fire as of late for the number of bugs the title has. One bug is so strange in fact, that even Microsoft may not be pleased by it.
“EA’s new Need for Speed Shift is the most bug-ridden piece of code I have witnessed in recent times.”, says Freakbits user enigmax today. The reason for this post? The title wanted to access the PlayStation Store … on the Xbox 360.
When navigating menus today while connected to Xbox Live the game suddenly crashed again. When my rage had subsided and I got a better look at the screen, I was pretty shocked at what I saw.
Was my Xbox 360 version of Need for Speed Shift really trying to access the Playstation Store? Microsoft are not going to be happy about this.

Need for Speed Demo Shifts Into Gear

Need for Speed: Shift‘s release date has come and gone, and many are wondering when a demo would be coming. Fear not, as we have an answer for you.
By visiting the website to download the PC demo of the title, you’ll be shown the additional release dates for the demo on consoles. The demo for the PS3 version will hit October 1st 2009.
Need for Speed: Shift released on September 15th 2009, and has received generally positive reviews. The game was developed by Slightly Mad Studios, and published by Electronic Arts.

Need For Speed Developer Revises Statement

Need For Speed Shift, by Electronic Arts, has been a lot of praise for seemingly redeeming itself for the past releases in the series. Although that doesn’t stop the drama and backpedaling for misinterpreted statements.
Originally Andy Tudor, developer on Shift, stated that the damage effects were better in Shift than Gran Turismo 5. The reasoning behind this is because of GT5 having rollcages in the car. Shift does not have this at all within the game. Tudor then said that the inclusion of the rollcages made it not “quite so realistic”.
Many people took this as a bashing on GT5, and took offense to it. He has now revised/updated his statement to say that it was a good workaround, and that Shift has yet to need to do that.

Need for Speed: SHIFT Boasts Adrenaline-Pumping Soundtrack

Electronic Arts Inc. today announced the track list that will propel players to the finish line in Need for Speed™ SHIFT when it hits retail stores in North America on September 15 (in stores across Europe on September 17, 2009). The SHIFT soundtrack features some of today’s most influential hip hop and rock artists including Kanye West, The Prodigy, Kasabian, and MSTRKRFT. Each song was hand selected to provide a pounding score that matches the intensity and bone-crushing power of this year’s Need for Speed.

The game has already received several positive reviews including one from Official Xbox Magazine which referred to Need for Speed SHIFT as a “brilliant turn in a new direction” and “deep and addictive.”
“Intense music has always fueled the sound of Need For Speed,” said Steve Schnur, Worldwide Executive of Music and Music Marketing at EA. “For SHIFT, we truly went underground to bring together some of the edgiest new tracks in electronic music, hip-hop and rock from around the world.
