title="It’s Official, The PSP Go is Put to Rest" href="http://playstationlifestyle.net/2011/04/20/its-official-the-psp-go-is-put-to-rest/" target="_blank">recent cancellation of production of PSP Go units is a sure sign the struggle is near over. Now Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter has summarized its outing as “a flop”.

We found out earlier this week that production of PSP Go devices was brought to a halt, which is an obvious sign that there’s no profit to be had in the handheld unit any more. It’s an unusual move for Sony, since most of their hardware is intended to have a much longer shelf life than the mere year and a half the Go has been available for.

The PSP Go was meant to help usher in the digital distribution era by removing the UMD drive, effectively forcing gamers to download all media and freeing them from carrying their games everywhere they go. However, this main “feature” also turned out to be the main source of complaints from users, primarily due to a limited library compared to the physical games available, as well as no reason to spend more money on it. With regards to that, Mr. Pachter seems far from surprised at the Go’s failure.

It was a flop because it wasn’t sufficiently differentiated from the PSP-3000 to justify the much higher price. There’s not a lot to say about PSPgo. The feature set was cool, but not cool enough. The download-only mechanism was not as attractive as they thought it would be. The form factor, while nice, wasn’t worth an extra $80.

It’s difficult to disagree with him, and the low sales and recent cancellation certainly support that. While it’s quite likely Sony has lost a lot of money as a result of this failure, they probably aren’t walking away empty-handed. A couple lessons can be learned here, which will hopefully apply to the upcoming NGP handheld, which will have all games available for digital download, with a certain set of these available for physical purchase as well. This should help keep retailers from feeling cut out of the loop, and give consumers a more versatile device with better options. M2 Research senior analyst Billy Pidgeon seems to think this was a necessary step:

PSPgo was a failure, but iterative failure is a necessary step in progress toward innovation. PSPgo could have contributed very helpful feedback to Sony’s dedicated handheld strategy as an open beta marketplace test in the evolution of game distribution from a physical media format to digital media format. NGP may well be a better system due to lessons Sony learned with PSPgo.

Hopefully this is the case. Sony is usually pretty good at learning from their mistakes, and the current plans for the upcoming NGP look promising. In any case, we’ll hopefully find out more as E3 approaches and more information about the NGP line up is revealed. Were you one of the few who bought a Go, and if so what are your final thoughts on it?

[<a

Apparently, no more shipments will be received at the shop where this blogger works. Is this really much of a surprise though, given the all the portable console’s troubles, such as a high price point and <a

Sony has yet to announce anything regarding the console’s future, but the Japanese Sony Style store does indicate that the Go is out of stock, with no notification as to when new stock will arrive. Stay with PlayStation LifeStyle for more on this story as it develops.

Google‘s Android operating system. The PSP phone has also been all but confirmed thanks to some pictures and now video of the device in action. Now, developers have access to certain buttons that seem taken straight from the world of PlayStation…

As MobileCrunch noticed on the Android Developers website, buttons such as L1, L2, R1 and R2 have been referenced in the official API (Application Programming Interface) documentation for use with Android 2.3 (codename “Gingerbread”) SDKs (Software Development Kits). That’s just fancy programming speak meaning developers can now tell when a certain button on your controller is pressed.

So what does this mean? The short answer is that game controllers will definitely be used in the Android world soon. But the inclusion of those specific buttons adds credence to the possibility of the PSP Phone coming sooner rather than later. There are no other PlayStation-esque buttons here, with A, B, C and X, Y, and Z rounding out the usual slew of controller buttons. But with descriptions such as indications of thumb sticks being pressed (presumably, like a button), similar to pressing down on the analog sticks on the PS3 controllers, this could mean the PSP Phone and/or PSP2 will be compatible with the SIXAXIS/DualShock 3, as their older cousin the PSPGo currently is. No one knows for sure, but rest assured PlayStation LifeStyle will be here to let you know more information as it develops.

a PlayStation branded tablet. According to a hot new rumor, the former may be coming, albeit in a slightly different package than what PlayStation gamers were clamoring for.

Although just last month rumors were abound about a PlayStation ‘tablet’ – featuring an Android powered half iPad, half PlayStation gaming device sporting Nvidia’s upcoming Tegra 2 processor – a new rumor has surfaced coming from a “trusted source” that Sony Ericsson is hard at work “on a project to redefine gaming on Google’s mobile platform [Android]“.

The rumor comes from tech blog Engadget, whose sources also reveal that the device is a landscape sliding smartphone, but instead of a QWERTY keyboard, there will be a D-Pad and face buttons. Instead of an analog stick, the device is said to have a “long touchpad for analog controls” along with shoulder buttons found on the PSP. Sounds lot like the form factor of a PSP go to us…

So what’s under the hood of this appealing sounding smartphone? Also according to this “trusted source”: it’ll feature Android 3.0 (codenamed Gingerbread), roughly a 4 inch display, and a 1Ghz Snapdragon CPU. On top of those pimped out specs, the device is said to be “pretty damn sexy”. Engadget was also told that the device will likely be branded as a Sony Ericsson Xperia, there will also be some sort of PlayStation branding on it as well.

All of this is certainly fathomable, as Google and Sony have been partnering on various other projects very recently. Some of the new Xperia smartphones will be releasing with Android on board, not to mention Sony and Google’s recently announced partnership which has Sony releasing HDTVs that feature Google’s upcoming Google TV this fall. Of course, this makes perfect sense from a partnership standpoint as well, as Google wants to prove Android can be a platform for gaming, which Sony is no stranger to, and Sony could use a OS boost thanks to Google’s budding Android OS.

This latest rumor has us particularly excited here at PlayStation LifeStyle, as the staff has been slowly but surely converting our smartphones over to Google’s Android, and of course, we love PlayStation. A device like this – to us and to many consumers – would be a match made in heaven.

Sadly, until Sony is ready to announce something, this will have to be chalked up to nothing more than a rumor. For more information on this rumor, hit the source link at the end of the article to check out Engadget’s source’s full details.

[

The PSPgo has been source of controversy since its semi-leaked announcement last year. While Sony thought it would take them into the future, the device isn’t even catching ground in Japan, let alone the US or Europe. Is its large price point the only problem or are there more things to blame? Can Sony save its latest PSP? Or is it going, going…gone?

Yes, digital distribution is the way of the future. It’s hard to deny that. With the unbelievable success of the Apple products, as well as the presence of entire marketplaces across every single console devoted to all things intangible, we are at the beginning of a new era. Sony saw this opportunity and tried to be first out of the gate with the PSPgo. It was a genius plan. Get one of the most powerful handheld consoles and add fit it for the new age. Physical media? Old news. Syncing with a computer? Unnecessary. You can buy directly from the internet. Smaller and lighter for maximum portability. On paper, it looked like the future of portable gaming. But in practice, it looks like it’s going to be forgotten in the past.

Now I really like the idea of the PSPgo. I really do! But it almost seems that Sony is doing everything in its power to do wrong to this new device. First of all, is the price. Two hundred and fifty dollars? I don’t know if anyone told you this recently, but the economy isn’t exactly in its best shape nowadays. For a mere fifty dollars more, one could purchase the (almost) 3D ready, Blu-Ray playing, incredibly powerful PS3 and do pretty much “everything” with it. Which seems like a better bang-for-your-buck? The price needs to drop to at LEAST half of it’s current price to make it a bargain. At least lower in price than the PSP-3000.

Games and customer loyalty. A big doozy. I don’t think many people can say that the PSP doesn’t have a great library of games. That’s not the point here. The point is that while you’re talking up this digital device, you’ve been supporting it’s physical counterpart a lot more. How many different PSP bundles have come out with a killer game? Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker and Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep are two of the most recent ones I can think of. These bundles, with limited edition handhelds and the game, cost less than the PSPgo does by itself. Which is the better deal here? Why treat one version of the same product differently than the other? It’s almost like Sony is TRYING to sell more 3000s than PSPgos. Make the PSPgo more enticing to buy. Bundle it with not one, but maybe two or even three games. Give someone a reward for reaching for the new handheld. Oh wait… Too bad it’s only for one region.

Let’s look at existing customers who already have a PSP-1000. Or even a 2000 model. Their device is getting up there in age. They’re looking to upgrade to a new version of their beloved product. Let’s even say that they get over the price of the go. What about the large accumulation of existing UMD titles that they own? Not a chance. You’ve just excluded someone who has been your customer for several years now, by not letting them use their same games on current technology. It’s a completely different argument then backwards compatibility, where you can just ask customers to move on to the new generation. You have taken every option away for these people. First, there is no way to convert their UMD games into a digital format (legally at least). They are just pieces of plastic that have no use. Second, they shouldn’t be required to buy a current generation game again when they already own it. New copies of a game should come WITH a digital copy, rather than choosing between the two. So if you went for a digital version only, it would be cheaper (more on that later.)

Okay, let’s say they even got over that. They are fine with repurchasing all of their favorite PSP games with the wads of cash they have lying around. So they get onto the store and…what’s that? There aren’t even that many games available for purchase ON the store! Only games that have come out since the Go’s release, and anything else that Sony could scrounge up. What about games like Lumines, Crisis Core: FF7, and the two Star Oceans?? Any Final Fantasy 1, 2, or Tactics? Anybody? I’m not even going to mention a couple of the more obscure games that I’ve got for my PSP. The store isn’t being supported as well as it should be. For a current generation system, there should be more accessibility to the last fives years of its lifetime, not the most recent one.

Make the digital copies of your games not only accessible, but better marketed. If I had a choice to buy between a digital and a physical version for the same price, I’m going with physical. Why? Because it’s tangible, transferable, and has resale value. If a digital version of a game is available, it inherently doesn’t have these features. So where it lacks in features, it should make up in price. Drop the price of ALL digital releases. Check out this fun fact. Assassin’s Creed: Bloodlines sells at $29.99 at Gamestop. On the PSN Store? $39.99. Exactly the same with Dante’s Inferno. The list goes on. Worried about piracy? Think about it like this. Pirates are going to steal your products, no matter what. The people who are going to buy your product are going to buy it, no matter what. Why don’t you reward your loyal customers and make it more appealing to us all? Physical copies of games will include collector’s editions but also go with the “bundle” option of the game and the digital code for the price that it is at currently: $39.99. Everything else, drop the price.

The PSPgo really is a nice product. I’ve played with it a few times, but I picked up my 1000 model PSP from a friend and, other than the battery level, it’s doing just fine. The Go isn’t some cash-in that the Sony people cooked up in hoping they’d made a quick buck. I think the strangest thing about the PSPgo is that Sony seems to be the main entity planning its destruction. There is so much more that they could be doing to help this device shine, if not the ideas described here. Try to include your customer base, not exclude them. That way, the PSPgo may not go down in history like as the next Virtual Boy…
<hr

Pachter stated:

I think they’re doomed on small market share until they get more competitive on price. The PSPgo is more expensive than most iPod Touch devices and the game library is more expensive that the iPod library. Nintendo’s got a huge cost advantage on the DS … I think Sony is running into a brick wall trying to compete in that sector.

With that said, I don’t think they’re giving up. I think we’re going to have a PSP 4, 5, and 6 thousand, I’m hopeful that they come down in price, and that the games come down in cost and that they can be competitive.

He goes on to gives his opinion about the PSP’s future:

But right now I’d say they’re destined to be second place to Nintendo on the pure game front, and overall in third place with iPod thrown in there. So no, I don’t think the PSP is going to be a huge success in future.

What’s your take on the PSP’s future? Think the price tag it carries can ruin Sony’s handheld’s plans for the future?

[<a

From now until March 10th, Geekadelphia wants the best Philadelphia inspired <a

Two runners-up will also be selected. Their prize will be a copy of the Game of the Year Edition of LittleBigPlanet, and a $25 PSN giftcard.
