The Enemy Gets Unleashed in the Latest Red Faction: Armageddon Trailer

Red Faction: Armageddon is the latest entry this in the series best known for destructible environments. While the last game, Guerrilla, mainly focused on destroying the environment, Armageddon seems to have a much heavier emphasis on story.

It all starts in the underground subterranean world where an as-yet unnamed alien race dwells within Mars. Taking place fifty to sixty years after the events of Red Faction: Guerrilla, you play as Darius Mason, a successful businessman within the underground Martian human colonies. As the trailer below shows, you are tricked into opening a gateway that allows a flood of…creatures to wreak havoc on the people living underground, thus bringing about an Armageddon. There’s explosions, aliens, mechs, and perhaps even romance!

Red Faction: Armageddon is currently slated for release on June 7th in North America, and June 10th in Europe, Australia and the UK.

Delay Deployed for Red Faction: Origins

Video game movies — you know deep down you have a soft spot for them. From the wonderfully bad Super Mario Bros., to the recent blockbuster Prince of Persia movie: no matter what the budget, they all seem to turn out the same. Hoping to buck that stigma, THQ announced back in July that they would be bringing a Red Faction movie to television this March. However, don’t plan on setting your DVRs anytime soon.

Originally slated for a March release, Red Faction: Origins follows Alec Mason’s last surviving son, Jake, who fights against a new human army dedicated to destroying the Red Faction. To make things even more interesting, Jake’s sister has somehow gotten herself involved with the opposing army.

Unfortunately, if you were having a hard time waiting for the release, you are going to have even more time to wait. Announced today, via his Twitter, THQ CEO Danny Bilson had this to say:

Red Faction SyFi movie started prep this week! Shoot starts in January…airs in May with game release. More to come….

On the bright side, since this is coming out on Syfy, the extra time should give them even more time to come up with some crazy fish/eel/duck monster to create mayhem. Look for more info as the production gets under way this January.

THQ Gets Beat Down in Q1 Earnings

THQ has been quickly growing in both size and popularity in the last few years. Unfortunately, even though they are becoming a fan favorite amongst gamers, sales and subsequently, revenue is taking a serious UFC-style beat down.

During a recent investor call, THQ reported that with the lack of comparable titles to last years hits Red Faction: Guerrilla and UFC: Undisputed 2009 they posted a net loss of $30.1 million. They also reported that despite UFC Undisputed 2010 being an established franchise and selling somewhat well, it still did not meet expectations, selling .2 million less then Undisputed 2009.

According to CEO Brian Farrell they were hoping UFC 2010 would of had a bigger impact and thus proving you shouldn’t put all your eggs in one basket.

We built our plans for growth in UFC this year.

Although it is just one title, it does look to have had an overall detrimental effect on THQ’s revenue stream. With THQ readying heavy-hitters such as Red Faction: Armageddon and Saints Row 3, they certainly have the chance of bouncing these figures back to the impressive levels they once were.

Red Faction Preps Damage for the Silver Screen

Red Faction set a new bar for destruction on the previous generations’ of consoles. Red Faction Guerrilla brought the series to PS3 and Xbox 360 with very favorable reviews. A sequel is in the works and it’s been recently revealed a movie is in development.

CVG spoke with THQ‘s core VP, Danny Bilson. Danny detailed the company’s new strategy called “trans-media”, involving multiple media channels. Which equates to producing movies while producing the game. While this may not sound new Bilson promises this will not be the run of the mill adaptation.

“What you’re going to see from us in how we’re going to see original IP is going to be different, we’re going to be doing the most robust trans-media plays anybody’s ever seen in the games business.
“Other companies are, ‘oh, we just license this IP to this studio’ and you never see anything, or at the most you see some bad Mario Bros. movie. Nobody has ever made it work.”

Danny teases with a forecast of “some really interesting stuff” in reference to the “Red Faction” series.

“My game is going to get made either way but what I do is I’m giving these movie guys the opportunity to meet me two or three years at the end with a triple-A, awesome game and a triple-A, awesome movie that compliment each other – and certainly don’t repeat each other – and start to build a world and a fiction and all of that. You’re going to see some announcements from us soon that are very robust in that area and it’s nothing like you’ve seen before.”

I am cautiously optimistic they can perhaps break the movie vs. game mold. There hasn’t been very many games that made good movies and vice versa.

March is almost over and it has been a great month for games. With Yakuza 3, Final Fantasy XIII, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, God of War III, MLB 10: The Show, Mega Man 10, and Just Cause 2 releasing this month, we have all been very busy this month playing games. Here’s what everyone will be playing the last week of such a busy month.

I will be causing chaos in Just Cause 2, which has turned out to be my next gen San Andreas. Along with a little God of War III and White Knight Chronicles on the side.

Jonathan Leack – Editor

I’m playing God of War III on Titan Mode and trying to earn the platinum trophy. I gotta say that I absolutely love this game and can’t put it down. I might also hop on Battlefield: Bad Company 2 for some online fun.

Josh Fernandes – Social Media Manager

I will be finishing up Just Cause 2 and writing the review for it. Once I’m done with that, I’ll try to work toward completing the game 100%. There are so many collectibles in the game, I’ll probably be working towards 100% completion for weeks. I may pickup Just Cause 2, it looks like lots of fun. I still have to finish my God of War III – Challange of the Titans, and perhaps grab the few last screen shots for my God of War III – Treasure Guide. Definitely will check out the MAG DLC and maybe a little Battlefield: Bad Company 2. I still have another run through Dante’s to finish, but he hasn’t received much attention since Kratos arrived. My backlog grows!

Ryan Ordway – Technology Systems

I’m going to try to claw my way through Titan mode on GoW3 this weekend, then get back to some Ratchet and Clank: ACiT. I will probably also kick the tires of the new MAG trooper kit, I love the Raven APEX so I’m intrigued by the tweaked APEX. And it goes without saying there will be more MW2 and Monster Hunter Freedom Unite.

Thomas Williams – Author

My weekend will consist of finishing up my Resonance of Fate review and then working on my Sonic and Sega All-Star Racing review. Plus a little bit of God of War III and Final Fantasy XIII thrown-in for good measure. Just don’t tell Cameron, ok?

Yet another busy weekend for gaming. Firstly, I’ll be continuing to destroy the Gods in God of War III. Taking it to new heights with Wakeboarding HD. A dose of FIFA 10 and then reliving Snake’s epic adventure in MGS4.

Darksiders Mystery Code Includes a Free Guerrilla

If you have a copy of Darksiders sitting by your PS3, look inside of it right now. Why? Because there could be a mysterious code waiting for you, and THQ has revealed what this code does.

It’s not unlocks, cheats, or even skins. THQ has revealed that the mystery code includes “a digital Hellbook disc featuring Darksiders art, videos, and other awesome stuff!”, oh, and a free copy of Red Faction: Guerrilla. Yes, THQ surprised us all by announcing yesterday that this mystery code does in fact grant you access to a free copy of Red: Faction Guerrilla.

If you have the code, you’ll have to go to this link, and put in the code where it appropriately says, “Promo Code”. When that’s done, you will no longer have to pay the $39.99 for Red Faction. However, you will still pay for the shipping and handling. But does it really matter when you’re getting a free game? I hope not.

PlayStation Review Round Up – July 09

July saw a steady share of excellent games as well as a few movie based bombs. Generally summer is a drought for good gaming, but 2009 seems to confound that logic. Here is a look at what we reviewed for the month of July.

July’s reviews spanned all genres from 2D fighters two wild west shooters. A lot of the games that were reviewed turned out to be quite entertaining. The big winners this month were [shal]BlazBlue[/shal], [shal]Red Faction: Guerrilla[/shal], [shal]Battlefield 1943[/shal], and [shal]Shatter[/shal].
As for the lemons, Guitar Hero: Smash Hits left us feeling a sense of déjà vu and [shal]Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen[/shal] was, not surprisingly, a bad game based on a movie.

PS3 Review – Red Faction: Guerrilla

Developers have long lured us with talk of fully destructible environments for quite some time now, and Battlefield: Bad Company was one of the first titles to actually have a destructible feel to it. Unfortunately, the game wasn’t fully destructive. Sure, you could blow a chunk through the wall of a building, and the wall would break to some extent. But no matter how hard that building was battered, whether it was by missile fire or a vehicle driving through it, the structure would still stand perfectly straight. Thankfully, Red Faction: Guerrilla does away with that nonsense.

Red Faction: Guerrilla is set in the year 2120, with the Earth Defense Force as the main enemy. You play as Alec Mason, a mining engineer who has come to Mars to reunite with his brother, Dan. Your character comes equipped with a variety of weapons, some of which you stumble upon later on in the campaign. Mason begins the game with a sledge hammer weapon. In Red Faction: Guerrilla, you’ll be able to equip three weapons at once. These weapons can range from explosives, to guns capable of tearing down buildings. The game has a wide variety of weapons to choose from, and the ability to have three at once helps out a lot.
Volition promised their fans fully destructible environments and, incredibly, they achieved it. The title has vast numbers of buildings to destroy, cars to blow up, and bridges to collapse. The best part is that it’s a different experience every time. The first moment I watched as a building collapsed before my eyes, I was stunned. Never before have I seen that pulled off in a game so perfectly. Taking down buildings is a blast, and you can destroy them any way you want. The possibilities are endless.
The controls in Red Faction: Guerrilla are easy to pick up, with R1 used to fire your weapon, and X as your jump button. Switching your weapons out is as simple as holding R2 and making your selection with the D-pad. Driving is also a cinch, with R2 to accelerate, and L2 to brake or back up. The enemies in the game are repetitive at first, as you’ll run into the same enemy in all the territories on Mars. During the course of the game, however, the enemy variety gets kicked up a notch. Fortunately, the enemy characters are fun to take down, and despite the bad A.I. you probably won’t get bored with them during your playthrough.

Rumored PS Store Content for 05/21/09

This week the PS Store will be getting the [shal]inFAMOUS[/shal] demo, which will surely sway anyone who is on the fence (how could you be?!?) about this fantastic title into making a purchase. [shal]Red Faction Guerrilla[/shal] is giving PS3 owners some more demo love with a new multiplayer demo. As always there will be plenty of DLC to please owners of various games, including [shal]LittleBigPlanet[/shal], and [shal]F.E.A.R. 2[/shal]. We are expecting more [shal]PSOne[/shal] titles this week, as well as yet another PSP game.
