Here we are again at the end of another calendar year. It feels like it zipped by in a flash, but if you think back, you’ll remember some extremely special games this year, from LittleBigPlanet 2 to The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. But while there were tons of AAA games to enjoy from January to December, there were also a few others that truly surprised us. Unfortunately, not every good game gets the attention it deserves, so below we’ve compiled a list of just a few games that you may have missed in 2011.

5. Resistance 3

PSLS Score: 9/10

It’s always a shame when a great game doesn’t sell well, and Resistance 3 is a prime example of what is a rare but sad reality. Due to a saturated quarter of first-person shooters thanks to Battlefield 3 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Resistance 3 was a game that was left in the dust. But Resistance 3 houses a captivating campaign mode along with some intense multiplayer moments. It offers a great experience to be had with a huge arsenal of weapons, and can be played locally with a friend.

4. Shadows of the Damned

Original US Release Date: June 21, 2011
PSLS Score: 8/10

The problem for Shadows of the Damned wasn’t that it was bad, but rather that most people never even heard of the game. It wasn’t supported by a big marketing campaign at launch, and its developer isn’t exactly well-known, but what it does do is offer entertainment value with a slight dash of humor that few games are able to produce. It truly is one of those games that you might find in the bargain bin, begin playing, and quickly wonder why more people don’t know about it.

3. Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten

Original US Release Date: September 6, 2011
PSLS Score: 9/10

Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten falls under a genre that isn’t very populated: strategy role-playing. While it’s a niche genre, it’s one that has a history of providing extremely deep experiences, and Disgaea is king of the modern-day strategy RPG. This latest release improved upon its many predecessors in several ways which made gameplay more varied and richer. Who can say no to a game that you can play for over a hundred hours and still not even be half-way through completion? If you need a game that will give you a lot of bang for your buck, this is it, but don’t bother asking your friends if they’re playing it, because there’s a 99% chance they’ll have no idea what you’re talking about.

2. MotorStorm: Apocalypse

Original US Release Date: May 3, 2011
PSLS Score: 8/10

Having been delayed due to the Japanese earthquake, and receiving a subsequent lack of marketing, Evolution Studios themselves admitted that Apocalypse failed to sell well. It’s perhaps the best 3D game in existence, and has the fast-paced racing gameplay that nearly everyone is a fan of. There are a variety of vehicle types along with plenty of dynamic courses to thrash through. Oh, and did I mention there are intense crashes as well? The first dozen or so times you drive into an object you’ll be surprisingly more entertained than frustrated. The mixture of high-octane racing, explosions, and gorgeous 3D support makes this a great game to show off to your friends.

1. Rayman Origins

Original US Release Date: November 15, 2011
PSLS Score: 9/10

Not only is Rayman: Origins good, it’s extremely good. It’s arguably the most polished platformer on the PlayStation 3, and also one of the most enjoyable local multiplayer games of this generation. With gorgeous visuals, light humor, and crisp gameplay, there’s a lot to love about the game. It’s very rare that you see a classic formula translate itself so well into the modern gaming world, but Rayman: Origins did a remarkable job of doing just that. With a PlayStation Vita version coming in February, we hope to see this game gain the popularity it deserves.

Top Five Games You Probably Missed in 2010

As we progress further and further into this generation of gaming, the number of quality titles released each given year grows. All though more great games is always a good thing, there will undoubtedly be some that fall by the wayside, as gamers focus more on the big name titles. We’ve compiled a top five list of PS3 games that fared well critically, but lacked the overall selling power of the bigger titles.

5. Transformers: War for Cybertron

Original US Release Date: June 22nd
Metacritic Score: 77
PSLS Score: 7/10

Transformers: War for Cybertron took a rather different approach from previous Transformers games, it was a completely unique story, and was not based off a movie. What this amounted to was a decent third person shooter, letting players first take down Cybertron as the Decepticons, and then take it back as the Autobots. Tight controls, phenomenal voice acting and sound effects, gave an overall solid game that Transformers fans have been asking for. Not simply relying on the single player alone, the online offerings for Transformers: War for Cybertron were quite extensive. With four different classes to choose from, and the ability to level up each character, War for Cybertron had more to offer then most online shooters. The only downside to the multiplayer was the community was rather small, so finding a match could be tough. Even with the smaller online community, the single player alone makes up for it, and really is one that gamers should be going back to.

4. Split/Second

Metacritic Score: 84
PSLS Score: 8/10

What happens when you take a conventional arcade racer and add the ability to bring skyscrapers and 747s down on your opponents? You get one of the best arcade racers released to date. Split/Second gives you all the thrills of your basic arcade racer, but cranks the action up to 11. From little takedowns like debris shooting across the road, to bringing whole buildings down, the action is always entertaining. What may be lost by most gamers is besides the thrilling action, we also get a great racer on its own. One other aspect to Split/Second a lot of gamers missed out on, is its absolutely great online experience. The multiplayer in Split/Second has its issues, but is definitely one of the better online racers out there. Sure it may not be worth the $60 it was released at, but picking it up at a reduced price now makes it well worth it.

3. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow

Metacritic Score: 85
PSLS Score: 8/10

To many gamers, mentioning Castlevania and 3D in the same sentence brings back memories of poor games, but that didn’t stop Konami announcing Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. Fast forward to the October 5th release and gamer’s worries were put to rest. What we received was a beautiful action platformer, that combined not only a very engaging combat system, but also an excellent story. Combining gameplay from many franchises, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow kept gamers on their toes as they tackled the nearly 20 hour campaign. Sure some gamers and critics bashed Lords of Shadow for using many elements from other games, but there is still no denying just how fun this game is, even if it did not bring anything new to the table.

2. Enslaved: Odyssey to the West

Original US Release Date: October 5th
Metacritic Score: 80
PSLS Score: 8/10

Enslaved: Odyssey to the West was developed by the team behind the PS3 exclusive Heavenly Sword, Ninja Theory, and has an equally gripping story. You play as Monkey, a prisoner that has escaped a slave ship, and had the misfortune of stumbling across Trip, another prisoner. Trip installs a slave collar on Monkey and he must help her find a way home. Every aspect of the game will have you on the edge of your seat, waiting to see what happens next. The interaction between the two main characters only helps to solidify the top notch story. Although the platforming does seem simplified from time to time, the ability to move through the world so fluidly keeps the story progressing, and the frustration down.

1. 3D Dot Game Heroes

Metacritic Score: 77
PSLS Score: 9/10

3D Dot Game Heroes took the tried and true formula of the original Zelda, and gave it a unique art style in a 3D world. 3D Dot Game Heroes really does a great job of bringing back the nostalgia gamers had for the original Zelda. Many gamers may not bother to pick this up as the graphics aren’t realistic, and the sound may be in a simple 8 bit style, but that’s also what makes the game such a charmer. Sure 3D Dot Game Heroes doesn’t bring a lot new, but really once you get your hands on it you will instantly remember why you started playing video games in the first place. In a year with so many great games, these are just five that didn’t see the sales figures, or mass appeal, that those that had played them would have hoped for.

Resistance 3 v1.05 Patch Looks to Balance Multiplayer

Insomniac Games has been continually patching Resistance 3 as they aim to polish and balance the multiplayer environment. After seeing four patches in the first month of release, yet another patch is slated to be released – v1.05.

Tim Salvitti of Insomniac Games posted what will be changed in the next patch for Resistance 3, update v1.05. Below are the major changes noted:

Wildfire: We have made it so you have to lock on after each shot.
Chain Reaction: We have lowered the amount of time it take to take the final node (30sec down to 15sec I believe). After playing this it feels much better and doesn’t result in stalemates as much.
Leapers: We have reduced the number of leapers by one. ie- Level 1 is 2 leapers now. Level 2 is 2 leapers and 1 spitter.

The change to Chain Reaction will help battle the constant stalemates seen during play, while the Leapers change will be a pretty noticeable nerf for lower level players, but will help reduce the spam seen in games where nearly everyone has it equipped.

Patch v1.05 is on schedule to release during the middle of next week, so stay tuned!

Resistance 3 Addresses Frame Rate and Lag in v1.03 Patch

Resistance 3 aimed for the sky and succeeded in doing so, but no game is perfect. But for that there are updates, and Insomniac Games has just released a notable update for their latest first-person shooter.

Despite an unexpected delay, Resistance 3 patch v1.03 is now live and ready to be downloaded. Several adjustments have been made in this latest update, the likes of which have been aimed toward fixing the most prevalent issues in the multiplayer component, including but not limited to:

Team Deathmatch score limit lowered to 5000
Frame rate issues fixed
Lag issues fixed

The frame rate and lag issues have been a major complaint for users who have played the online since Resistance 3‘s release just two weeks ago. However, the Team Deathmatch score limit change in this update has made matches extremely fast, with each player only obtaining 6-10 kills before the round ending. Thankfully, Insomniac Games are already planning to roll out v1.04 which will make matches a bit longer while still retaining a score limit to cap off games.

This week, Insomniac’s latest and greatest title in their flagship first-person shooter franchise releases, along with a repackaged bundle of two of the greatest games on PS3. As for the PSP front, since the PS Vita is stealing all of the portable thunder, the PSP is still under the gaming dry spell.

Artistic Resistance 3 Trailer Makes its Debut at gamescom

Sony has released a brand new trailer for its upcoming sci-fi shooter Resistance 3. While the video doesn’t include any gameplay footage, it does lay out the story in a unique and artistic fashion.

For those that aren’t familiar with the plot of Resistance 3, the story is centered around a man named Joe Capelli, one of the few remaining humans that has managed to survive the Chimeran invasion. Now hiding underground, he and a group of survivors including his wife and child must fight to stay alive. For more details on the game’s story, check out the clip that Sony unveiled during their gamescom press conference below.

In addition, Insomniac has released a number of new screenshots that give us a closer look at the game’s campaign. Judging by the images, this is going to be one gritty adventure that first-person shooter fans won’t want to miss out on. With a plethora of unique weapons and an intriguing campaign, it will be hard for PS3 owners to pass this one up when it launches in September.

Bundle up With Uncharted Collection This July, Get Extra Goodies

For those gamers out there who for some reason haven’t played the first two Uncharted games but want to get caught up on the story before Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception releases, you will have a great opportunity to do just that at a cheaper price. Sony Computer Entertainment Europe have officially confirmed that the Uncharted Collection will be releasing next month on the PlayStation 3, after we spotted it at E3 earlier this month.

In the bundle, gamers will receive Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, along with goodies for the upcoming Drake’s Deception in the form of a dynamic PS3 theme and an avatar.

This is not the only collection to release on July 22nd, with the Resistance Dual Pack dropping the same day that includes the first two games and an exclusive Resistance 3 skin. There will also be a Ratchet & Clank Bundle featuring Tools of Destruction & A Crack in Time. This pack will include 4 avatars and an exclusive Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One dynamic theme. On top of that there will be the technically unconfirmed PSP bundles we saw at E3.

July 22nd has cemented itself as the best day to get caught up on three of the best series on the PlayStation 3.

Resistance 3 – E3 Preview

Resistance has been a flagship series for the PlayStation 3 platform since they were introduced together in late 2006. The last release in the series had a powerful ending, and now Resistance 3 is looking to carry the torch into late 2011. I had a chance to play both singleplayer and multiplayer at this year’s E3 convention, and I’d like to share some of my insight.

As known previously, Joseph Capelli will be the new protagonist for Resistance 3. While his personality and behavior wasn’t shown at E3, we can say that his environment is grim. The Lead Designer for the title shared that the setting will be a lot more ominous than the two previous games, and takes influence from books such as The Road, where mankind is faced with astronomical challenges. Capelli’s journey will take him across the United States, and while I was only able to see one area of many during the demo, it looked promising.

Large set pieces are back, and I battled against a large, menacing monster that had several strengths and weaknesses. The battle was a highlight for me, and I was terrified every time I heard him charging toward me. There are a wide-array of monsters in the new game, and I even saw a new type of Chimera in the demo, which were extremely mobile. My aiming precision was truly put to the test, and I found myself challenged by the difficulty of the artificial intelligence. Thankfully, the new arsenal is both entertaining and potent.

Gameplay is very familiar to those who have played Resistance before. The game is extremely fast-paced, and while it is set in a 1950′s motif, the weaponry is highly-advanced. Each weapon has a primary and alternate fire, and I found that each weapon I touched served an important purpose. Most of all, using them is a lot of fun. Being able to fire a tracer round into an enemy before launching dozens of homing lasers that zip toward the enemy was fun to watch, and particularly effective against the more mobile creatures.

A new upgrade system in the campaign mode rewards you for using individual weapons for extended periods of time. Basically, as you get better at using a single weapon, it’ll also upgrade along a path, enhancing its capabilities in the process. After using the sniper rifle for a few minutes, it upgraded to level 2, and I could immediately notice the change. Not only do the weapons become more powerful as they upgrade, but they visually evolve to indicate additional features.

Multiplayer was especially memorable, and I enjoyed myself thoroughly in the competitive arena. Choosing a pre-determined or custom loadout gave me flexibility before hopping in and playing team deathmatch. Resistance 3‘s game fluidity is one of its best assets, and that translates directly into online play. While I only played 4v4, a total of 16 players will be able to battle it out in the full game. The list of weapons is large, and along with several other options will make it fun for players to practice and find their weapon of choice.

Visually speaking, I didn’t find the game particularly impressive, but some of the environmental effects are great. Strong winds blew debris around the level I played in, while trees were nearly torn from their roots. With that said, 3D implementation looks very promising. I actually found that the 3D experience was hands down more enjoyable than playing in 2D, so this might be one of the first PS3 games to really push the impressive technology. This actually makes sense given Sony’s recent $499 3DTV bundle announcement which includes Resistance 3. There will also be Move support, which should provide a fair amount of extra play value.

Resistance 3 is shaping up to be not only a great sequel, but also an excellent sci-fi shooter that should stand out among dozens in its genre. Look out for Resistance 3 when it releases in September later this year.

Resistance 3 Demo Available on Asian PSN Store Now [Update: It's Not Anymore]

Resistance 3 is being shown off to the press at E3 right now, but if you’re not in LA and want to get an early look at the game, we have some good news: the demo is on the Asian PSN right now.

If you don’t want to wait until Tuesday in the US to buy the Battle: LA Blu-ray with the demo on it, or wait for an unspecified time in Europe, you can log on to the Singaporean and Malaysian PSN and download the 1575 MB demo, and don’t worry, it is in English.

The demo is based on the fantastic looking boat level, with Insomniac saying that the demo will last around 30 minutes. Unfortunately, as the Hong Kong store still isn’t up yet, if you created a HK account it won’t work. Luckily, creating a Singapore account is all in English, so it isn’t too difficult.

Resistance 3 Sharp Shooter Bundle Announced

Resistance 3 has been announced for quite some time and, while the meaty details, such as collector’s editions, pre-order incentives, and release date have also been known for quite a while, an all-new Resistance 3 bundle has been announced at the Sony 2011 E3 Press Conference.

Similar to the SOCOM PlayStation Move bundle from April, Resistance 3 will come optionally packaged with everything players need to Move into the upcoming first-person shooter. Complete with a PlayStation Eye, PlayStation Move controller, navigation controller, sharp shooter attachment, and of course the game, the Resistance 3 bundle will release for $149.99.

Resistance 3 hits store shelves on September 6, 2011 for the PlayStation 3 complete with Move and 3D support.

Resistance 3 Dated in Europe, Pre-Order Bonuses Announced

Official reveals of Resistance 3 have been trickling our way since late September. With a US release date already pinned down, Europe is next to announce when the game will be available. Pre-order bonuses have also been detailed, and everything is available to read about after the break.

As detailed on the official EU PS Blog, those of you in the UK and Ireland can expect to be fighting the Chimera in all their gruesome forms on 9th September. The rest of the PAL region will receive the game a bit earlier, on the 7th of September. Pre-order goodies have also been announced, and where you can get them varies depending on your region and which retailer you purchase from:

SRPA Black Ops skin: Once a common sight in the war against the Chimera, this special SRPA Black Ops multiplayer skin lets you return to the battlefield as one of the most mysterious and deadly soldiers from Resistance 2 and Resistance: Fall of Man.
Infected Nathan Hale skin: By skipping his viral inhibitor treatment throughout Resistance 2, Nathan Hale fell victim to the deadly Chimera virus. Now you can resurrect the fallen hero with this special multiplayer character skin.

Powerful Resistance Bundle Set For Summer Release

After last week’s reveal of the box art for Resistance 3, the game’s release date of September 6th became a date circled on the calendar of many PlayStation 3 owners. In anticipation of this release for the PS3 exclusive Resistance series, the developer has announced a Greatest Hits Bundle packaging the first two games together.

An insert within the Battle: Los Angeles Blu-Ray – releasing June 14th, 2011 – announces that a Greatest Hits release containing both Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2 will hit store shelves this summer with a MSRP of $39.99. The Blu-Ray insert also states that the bundle includes $10 worth of bonus content and an exclusive Resistance 3 skin. The Battle: Los Angeles Blu-Ray disc itself contains a demo of Resistance 3 playable on the PlayStation 3 console.

Resistance: Fall of Man released in North America on November 17th, 2006 and featured Sgt. Nathan Hale battling against a seemingly alien invasion in an alternate history of 1951. Resistance 2 continued Nathan Hale’s fight against the invading force as he headed from Britain to the United States and released on November 4th, 2008. Resistance 3‘s plot directly follows that of the first two games, taking place four years after the conclusion of the second game, so players still yet to play either game will now have a timely opportunity to play catch up and wage war on the Chimeran forces.

Resistance 3 Box Art Revealed, Aims To Try Something New

If you speak to most analysts, technology gurus or media providers, they’ll agree on one thing – digital distribution is the future. No going out to buy a game, no paying an unnecessary retailer and no messy game boxes. But Insomniac Games have proved just why a large group of people want boxes to stay, after unveiling the Resistance 3 box art.

Partnering with Olly Moss, “a talented British artist”, Insomniac revealed the North American and European box art on the PlayStation Blog. A Chimeran Skull with the New York skyline shown as its teeth with a red background is rather different from the general “man posing with a gun” style of most first person shooters.

The Resistance developers “worked closely with Olly” to ensure that their idea of a Chimera-occupied 1957 was correctly portrayed. In an alternate version of the art, Joesph Capelli’s journey across the ravaged US to New York City is shown:

Insomniac were keen to emphasise that in Resistance 3 the army and SRPA have been destroyed, and that the game focuses on what is left of mankind desperately trying to to survive.

Resistance 3 Demo Announced, To Be Bundled With Battle: LA Blu-Ray

Sony Picture Entertainment’s high-budget alien movie, Battle: Los Angeles, and Sony Computer Entertainment’s high-budget alien shooter, Resistance 3, have always had a close relationship, with Insomniac’s FPS originally spotted in a billboard during Battle: LA‘s production. After teasing big news for today, the developer has now revealed a Resistance demo, which will be included on the movie’s Blu-Ray.

Every copy of the film’s Blu-Ray (at least in the US) will have a copy of the Resistance 3 demo installed, which will be around half-hour an long and be based on the already-shown boat level. There is no word on when the demo will release on the PlayStation Network, but Battle: Los Angeles will be available on Blu-ray and DVD on June 14. Sony previously did a rather similar move when they bundled a God of War III demo with District 9.

Insomniac Teases New Resistance 3 Information Breakout Tonight

Resistance: Fall of Man was the first glimmering sign of hope for Sony when the PlayStation 3 debuted at $599 U.S dollars. Years later, FPS fans are excited to see what the third installment will bring, hoping to stray from the repetition of purchasing Call of Duty during the holiday season every year. We don’t know much about what Resistance 3 will offer, but hopefully the new details revealed tonight will be reason to start getting antsy.

In anticipation of Resistance 3‘s release later this year, Insomniac Games is prepping some new information to share tonight. Via Facebook, Insomniac posted the following:

If you’re a fan of Resistance 3, we will be announcing some fun news tonight on @G4TV’s @XPlay that should get you excited!

Analysts ‘Reconfirm’ NGP for a 2011 Release

The NGP hype-train is picking up steam as we head closer and closer to E3, where Sony is expected to release all the juicy details on their next handheld. Our latest chat about the NGP in our podcast had us excited for more details, but the big question still remains: When can we get our hands on this thing!? If an analyst who recently attended a Sony conference is to be believed, Sony’s planning on living up to their promise to give us a very happy holiday.

During Sony’s analyst day, a 2011 launch was reconfirmed, alleviating some of the doubts their silence on the matter had brought about. This is all according to a US investment company, Lazard Capital Markets, who published a report on the Next Generation Portable. The report talks about the US launch, but stated that Sony was not as clear about the details for some international release dates, like the UK or Europe.

Lazard Capital Market’s report also mentioned Sony showing off the handheld’s capabilities as it played parts of Uncharted, Twisted Metal, Resistance 3, SOCOM 4, and even Infamous 2. While impressed by what they saw in the demonstrations, they also mentioned their ever present hesitations on the inevitable price announcement.

A 2011 launch for NGP was reconfirmed, although we expect pricing will be unveiled around the E3 conference.
We remain somewhat concerned that an initially high price point could limit the market opportunity for NGP, since Sony continues to balance profitability goals with unit sales.
We note that Uncharted for NGP looks impressive vs. some of the early PSP games, which lacked differentiation in many respects.
