The original Trine was one of the best downloadable games of 2009. Featuring head-scratching puzzles, entertaining platforming and fun fights, it was clear from the start that developer Frozenbyte had a hit on their hands. Its sequel was released just before the Christmas holiday (for North America, anyway), which is of course the perfect time to slay goblins and dragons. Can the Trine strike twice? We’ll find out in our review.

The game begins sometime after the events of the first Trine, and we join our three heroes as they are adjusting back to their normal lives. No heroes could stay out of action for long, and before we know it, Amadeus the wizard, Zoya, a thief and Pontius the knight are called back for another glorious adventure.

Fans of the original Trine will feel right at home here, since the controls have not changed at all. One big difference lies in the complete absence of the energy bar, which means that you can lift objects as the wizard as long as you want, which has its advantages and drawbacks, especially in multiplayer. The platforming remains the same in Trine 2 as well, which is to say it still requires an exacting jumping method. Miss your jump by a few inches and you won’t make a clearing, and your character will be sent plunging towards the ground or worse. But you will probably learn the game’s jumping mechanics quickly, and adapt to its quirks.

This is one of the best-looking downloadable games money can buy. The environment oozes with fantasy, and Trine 2‘s gigantic enemies such as snails and dragons wouldn’t look out of place in a fairytale book. The frame rate maintains stable throughout the adventure, even when playing with the maximum of three human players, which is arguably one of the the most fun ways to experience Trine 2 (more on that later). There are all sorts of fitting magical effects when firing weapons, when enemies attack, and whenever the environment is being interacted with. If you want to show off great fantasy graphics to a friend, this is the game to do it with. Audio is also fitting here, with a light fantasy touch on the soundtrack and sound effects.

Trine 2 just begs to be played with more than one player. With three main characters who often have to work together to tackle the forest’s puzzles, the game can get formidably challenging when playing alone. Add even one additional person, and the game becomes incredibly easy, to a fault in fact. Most challenges can be overcome using the wizard to conjure up a box, position another player on said box, and move the box with the wizard again to get up a cliff or over a gap. Since there is no more energy bar to stop you from constantly moving objects in this game, it feels a bit like cheating but at least speeds up progress.

Speaking of progress, Trine 2 does not try to impede yours. If you’re at a particularly brain-scratching puzzle and cannot solve it with one or two characters, you can “respec” the experience points you have earned so far to obtain new abilities on the fly. For example, some of the wizard’s higher-level powers include creating floating platforms, but it takes quite a few experience points to get there. Simply take some points from the knight or thief, re-apply them to the wizard, and carry on your merry way. The game doesn’t really explain this, and you have to figure it out on your own. While some people may not like this crutch, I enjoy the trial by experimentation route of discovering new solutions.

Fans of the first Trine should pick this game up without hesitation. It gives you more of the wonderful mix of platforming and puzzles that make you feel clever once you solve them. Trine 2 becomes incredibly easy when working with two or more people, however the game is so fun when playing in multiplayer that you don’t really care about the wizard being able to bypass puzzles completely. The story is an enjoyable light affair, and you could not ask for a better looking game, disc-based or not. It’s not a huge step up from the first game, but rather just more of the same great fun.

A new trailer has released for Trine 2, entitled “Vibes”, which shows off the beauty of the new sequel while setting the general mood for the game.

Trine is a great puzzle platforming game which was already visually pleasing when it was released back in 2009, but Trine 2 is definitely set to up the ante.  The new “Vibes” trailer doesn’t show any gameplay, but instead pans through different views of the beautiful environment we’ll adventure through when we return for another adventure with our three unlikely heroes. More lush jungle landscapes with greater detail than ever can be seen, along with more wonderfully crafted underwater views that seem to hint at more swimming in the sequel. Toward the end we even get a glimpse of a frozen, snow covered area, indicating our characters may be getting frosty later on.

Frozenbyte was also kind enough to include a brief update on their progress in a press release accompanying the trailer, explaining that their artists have completed work on the game, but the technical end will still require a few months for completion. This gave the artists a bit more free time to make this trailer, which Frozenbyte’s CEO, Lauri Hyvärinen, commented on:

We just love creating awesome videos and this one is special in many ways, reflecting the mood and feeling of what Trine 2 will offer.

She went on to explain how much longer we have to wait for a chance to play:

There is still a lot of work to do – our programmers are working hard to ensure that the game ships bug-free and that all of the gameplay features match the quality level we want. The game will be released once we have completed our work and the game has passed all the console-related quality assurance processes, so we are still a few months away. Ultimately we decided that we don’t want to rush things – our goal is to make Trine 2 one of the best if not the best downloadable game of 2011 and we’ll stick to that.

The game is still slated to release this year, which is great news for fans like me. However, you may remember that the original Trine suffered from a few hiccups getting through the QA process for console release, which delayed its release significantly. Hopefully they learned a few lessons from that experience and the final touches go more smoothly this time around. Either way, we’ll keep you posted when Frozenbyte updates us again on their progress with Trine 2.

Frozenbyte’s Trine was and currently still is one of the PlayStation Network’s best valued games. It also has a platinum trophy to be acquired, something which you don’t normally see in PSN-only titles, however, trophy art was not present for the game as well as various bugs being reported. A European patch was released to help address these problems, and now the patch for the US version of the platformer has finally been released.

The update fixes the following:

• Adds failsafe for unlocking Very Hard difficulty
• Fixes a respawn bug in Iron Forge (co-op) near the first gate
• Fixes a rare crash when the player touches a falling rock as it breaks (Crystal Caverns)
• Fixes a rare crash when a water splash effect is played while the player exits to menus
• Fixes a rare bug that occurred when the player switched characters and died simultaneously
• Fixes final boss animations sometimes not working properly (Tower of Sarek)
• Fixes a co-op respawn bug with the last checkpoint (Tower of Sarek)
• Fixes a collision issue in the Iron Forge level (caused the Thief to take damage from lava)
• Fixes several oxygen gauge bugs
• Fixes autoaim bugs in Tower of Sarek
• Fixes the Boots item to work properly (reduces spike/goo damage)
• Fixes random failure of overwriting save slots in the New Game menu
• Fixes Credits section names

Frozenbyte’s action platformer Trine undoubtedly received a lot of praise due to its unique style. Atlus has revealed its E3 line-up and in it, reveals Trine’s successor.

Although no platforms has been announced for Trine 2, it’s safe to assume it’ll be arriving onto the PlayStation 3 as its predecessor was a PlayStation Network exclusive. Their full line-up are as follows:

Frozenbyte‘s Joel Kinnunen’s has commented on how the Xbox 360 port of Trine is coming along. In fact it might not be coming at all.

On the firm’s website, one of Frozenbyte’s team members, Joel Kinnunen, stated that action-platformer Trine will most likely be staying on the PlayStation 3 and PC only.

It’s out of our hands but most likely will not happen. Sorry. (We probably won’t comment on this any further.)

Note: When we say “PlayStation Exclusive”, we mean in terms of consoles. Trine is also available on PC as clearly stated (and now bolded) above.

November was a huge month in terms of big name game releases. From Modern Warfare 2 to Assassins Creed 2 we have been busy reviewing blockbuster titles.

The PS3 in total had three games receive a 5/5 Assassins Creed 2, Dragon Age: Origins and The God of War Collection while Modern Warfare 2 got a 5/5 editors choice. Besides those four we also seen DJ Hero, Eye Pet, Buzz! Quiz World, Tekken 6 and Borderlands all got a 4/5, so if your really looking for a game to get this holiday season there are plenty high quality titles to choose from.

As far as the PSP it also seen its fair share of good games. Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars received a 5/5 and Little Big Planet got the coveted 5/5 editors choice. Not to be left out the PSN sees two highly anticipated games Braid and Trine hit the store with high praise from the staff.

With video games, nostalgia can be a challenging affair. Oftentimes, the over-the-top epic from yesteryear just falls flat, which is specifically why Trine is so refreshing. It’s not a masterful remake of an old 16-bit staple, but it certainly plays like one. It’s very much inspired by old-school platforming titles, albeit designed with more contemporary hardware in mind. What sets it apart is its presentation quality and the fact that it’s a brand new IP. Contained within is a solid storyline that’s somewhat tongue in cheek, and a strong gameplay experience.

Frozenbyte is somewhat of a newcomer to the PlayStation Network, with Trine being their third game so far. The title is a bit of a departure, as their first two titles were first-person shooters. Though Trine is a platformer at its core, it has various puzzles and enough tricks to make it stand out from the bullet-ridden games that normally dominate the sales charts.

Deep inside the Astral Academy lies a strange and powerful ancient object that an opportunistic thief sets off to take. It’s strangely beautiful, and she can’t take her hands off of it. Soon after, a would be magician shows up, followed by a brave yet untested knight. All of them are transfixed by the item and unable to tear themselves away. Before they know it, the trio is fused into one, with the ability to switch back and forth between each individual. Their quest to break this curse leads them over a dozen areas filled with undead adversaries, traps, and all sorts of nasty bits.

Trine is a back-to-basics adventure game based on co-operative game mechanics, via the three in one main character. The Knight or the Thief will get the most use, depending on whether enemies require ranged or close attacks. The magician is the puzzle solver, providing safe passage through many of the areas along the quest.

What the magician lacks in lightning and fireballs, he makes up for with platforming tools. He has the ability to conjure boxes and platforms of various sizes out of thin air.  And, if I dare say it, some of the puzzle elements have a feel that’s very reminiscent of LitteBigPlanet. The thief’s bow is quite vicious once you power her up, as she can eventually shoot up to four arrows at once. The warrior comes stocked with a sword and a shield with a hammer becoming available later.

Each level contains little green potions that earn you experience points. In addition to the usual XP system, there are a multitude of powerups.  Some are class restricted, while others are not. Multi-usage even comes into play, such as a powerup that can give the archer an additional arrow, but the mage more platforms. It can be tricky getting all of the necessary items and experience for your characters, but it’s well worth the effort. The puzzles can be forgiving in terms of how you complete them, but can still end up being quite tricky. There is not much enemy variety, but fights can be a challenge if not approached in the correct manner.

The audio portion of Trine is a tad lacking.  Some of the fighting just didn’t feel as epic as it could have if the soundtrack was more dramatic. Fighting is very simplistic, especially during the early portion of the game before the introduction of power-ups. The game does pick up in the later chapters, and makes use of each of the characters unique abilities with greater complexities. Thankfuly local co-op is supported to assist with some of the more difficult areas.

Trine comes complete with a full roster of trophies, including the highly coveted Platinum. It’s a fun romp for anyone who enjoys a good side scrolling adventure game, and will take several hours to unlock all of the cleverly hidden items.

Below is a list of the top downloaded items from the PlayStation Store for the week ending November 19th. The list sees the Warden’s Keep DLC for Dragon Age: Origins retain the top spot, while newcomer Braid takes the number 3 spot. The biggest jump up in the rankings came with Marvel vs. Capcom taking the jump from 12th to 8th. Call of Duty is still showing strong with plenty of content in the top 20.
