The Japanese publisher has shown their confidence in Sony’s flagship console, putting more support in the PS3 than any other platform.

<span

Meanwhile, the Xbox 360 games are only expected to sell 4.7 million copies and will only see 14 of Capcom’s titles, almost half of the PS3 titles’ projected success.

<img

Part three of our four-part series keeping a close eye on the hardware and software sales during the Japanese holiday season confirms PSP’s pure dominance.
For the week of May 2 through May 8, Media Create’s hardware charts ended up looking like this:

PSP: 54,882
3DS: 29,149
PS3: 20,883
Wii: 11,520
DSi LL: 10,519
DSi: 8,708
Xbox 360: 3,419
PS2: 1,696
DS Lite: 289
PSP go: 258

As I’ve mentioned, the first week of May is chock full of holidays in Japan, so this is a critical sales week for game companies. It’s like Christmas Lite.

Continuing recent trends, handhelds took the top spots. The PSP’s next big releases will be Namco Bandai’s anime-based The Reminiscence of Haruhi Suzumiya and the wacky adventure game Akiba’s Trip, in which players must rip the clothes off of vampire-zombies in order to expose them to sunlight and kill them. I. Am. Not. Joking. These are highly anticipated titles, so PSP will definitely be in the top 3 for the whole month of May, if not still sitting in the throne.

Smart money also says the PS3 sees a surge in June, when Yakuza: Of the End hits store shelves. We’ll see just how high it gets.

In case you missed previous updates, here they are:

Here in Japan, once in a while I enjoy kickin’ it at a net cafe. These places are dope. In addition to the expected compuboxes with intertrons and games, they’ve got billiards, darts, massage chairs, a big ol’ magazine rack, party rooms (if that sounds silly, keep in mind, this is Japan, where most peoples’ houses and apartments are way too small to host a party), karaoke and more. Some areas happen to include a TV with a gaming console. Even now, in 2011, that console is almost always the PlayStation 2. I say “almost” giving somewhere the benefit of the doubt; I have personally never seen anything other than a PS2 in those cubicles. In addition to the available consoles, there’s a big wall of software to be freely borrowed.

With that said, we move to recent hardware sales news. Japanese electronics sales ranking group Media Create has said that last week, the mighty PlayStation 2 managed to outsell the Xbox 360, despite being a full generation older. The gap wasn’t all that big though, as it stood PS2: 1,638 and Xbox 360: 1,619. The complete list went:

Nintendo 3DS – 61,394
PlayStation 3 – 26,623
PlayStation Portable – 22,911
Wii – 9,724
DSi LL – 7,452
DSi – 6,513
PlayStation 2 – 1,638
Xbox 360 – 1,619
DS Lite – 625
PSPgo – 600

The top-10 Software sales look like this, with the first number being the amount of copies sold last week, and the second being the total sold since the game’s release.

01. Dynasty Warriors 6 (PS3) – 67,475 last week, (320,565 total sold)
02. Dissidia 012 Duodecim Final Fantasy (PSP) – 31,508 / 382,171 total
03. Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask (3DS) – 18,470 / 226,355 total
04. Phantasy Star Portable 2: Infinity (PSP) – 16,175 / 286,014 total
05. Monster Hunter Freedom 3 (PSP) – 14,773 / 4,385,209 total
06. Nintendogs + cats (3DS) – 14,726 / 147,523 total
07. SD Gundam G Generation World (PSP) – 14,263 / 273,643 total
08. Way of the Samurai 4 (PS3) – 13,807 / 101,330 total
09. Powerful Golf (DS) – 10,125 / New on the list
10. Hanaoni: Koisomeru Koku – Eikyuu no Shirushi (PSP) – 10,021 / New on the list

Impressive to say the least. Go PS2!

[<a

Well, in a practically unfathomable act of generosity, upon hearing that a particular 360 owner would not be able to enjoy the destructive mayhem that is Twisted Metal next year, co-directer and co-lead designer at Eat.Sleep.Play David Jaffe took it upon himself to try and bring a little PS3 cheer to a 360 owner in need.

Let’s be honest, there are probably gamers all over the country with little to no money who would have appreciated the sentiment, but that doesn’t make this act any less awesome. When a Twitter user by the name of mayham_stone050 questioned Jaffe as to whether or not the new Twisted Metal would be making its way to the Xbox 360, Jaffe had to deliver the unfortunate news that the game is indeed a PS3 exclusive. However, later on Jaffe was on the hunt for the user who posted the question, as he had a big surprise for him.

With the support of Eat.Sleep.Play and Sony Santa Monica, David managed to hook this 360 owner up with a brand spanking new PS3, just so he could enjoy the Twisted Metal action next year. The lucky recipient then responded, stating that he was on his way to GameStop to pre-order the game in support of the developers behind the game. David Jaffe really never ceases to amaze any of us. With his brutally honest opinions and often laid-back demeanor, David definitely does stand out among today’s industry professionals. This is certainly adds bonus points to David Jaffe’s “awesome factor”. Keep doing what you’re doing Dave, we love ya for it!

Oh, and mayham_stone050, after you receive your console, I happen to know of a fantastic site where you can get all the latest PlayStation news and reviews… *wink*

[

Vice president of Europe’s EA, Jens Uwe, thinks that the Sony’s console will catch up with the sales of the Xbox 360, thanks to the popularity of the console within Europe.

“We could certainly see Sony come back – in the UK it’s still a head-to-head competition between PlayStation and Xbox, but on the continent Sony is traditionally stronger than Microsoft.”

Uwe goes further to say that they enjoy the benefits of the competition between the two console giants.

“But we’re very happy to watch the competition, because as long as they’re competing to get more consumers in, there are more people we can sell games to.”

It seems his comment may be directed to just European sales and not world-wide. However, any increase in sales anywhere will definitely help boost Sony’s chance of evening the playing field with Microsoft. With the launch of PlayStation Move, perhaps this may help raise the numbers. Only time will tell.

[<a

However, it looks like Gabe and his pals are singing a very different song now.

Apparently, the grass on XboxLive’s side of the fence isn’t as green as their logo, as Gabe Newell and Erik Johnson from Valve tore into the online service this week in an in-depth interview conducted by PCGamer. According to Gabe, providing updates for gamers on XboxLive is a constant hassle for developers, while the PSN is comparably much easier, giving developers the ability to release as much content and as many updates as they need, free of charge.

We thought that there would be something that would emerge, because we figured it was a sort of untenable… Oh yeah, we understand that these are the rules now, but it’s such a train wreck that something will have to change.

That’s why we’re really happy with the current situation with the PS3… We’re solving it now in a way that is going to work for our customers, rather than assuming something is going to emerge later that will allow us to fix this.

Erik Johnson also sounded off in the interview:

Favourite conversation of ours! PS3, so far. The way we’ve dealt with those customers so far, and the product that they have, and the lack of updates on the 360 for TF2 is also a total failure. Those are the ones that sting the worst because… it got all the way through to customers. It’s like a bug. If you fix a bug before it ever ships, it’s pretty cheap. If you ship it and then fix it, it’s really expensive. Those ones are really bad.

The tide is ever changing in the PS3 vs. 360 battle, even though according to Sony, it’s not about beating Microsoft, but about how much quality content they can deliver. If execs at a company like Valve, once the PS3′s harshest critics, feel this way, there’s no doubt that these feelings are probably resonating all around the development community. And people thought the Sega vs. Nintendo era was intense!?

[Several members of the Blu-ray association have spoken to Microsoft about the possibility of a Blu-ray capable Xbox, only to have their words fall on def ears, as the company is still, apparently, looking for other alternatives. European BDA chairman, Graham Heaton, stated the following:

Already games such as Metal Gear Solid 4 and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves are pushing the limits of the Blu-ray 50GB discs. The infrastructure for broadband throughout the world varies greatly and is a long way from being able to support the downloading and streaming of 50GB games in a consumer friendly format.

It will be a very long time before this changes, so Blu-ray is in a ideal position to ensure that the best games are available to all gamers.

Any company willing to join would be welcome.

When asked whether or not Microsoft would, at some point, adopt Blu-ray, Heaton replied:

That is up to Microsoft to decide.

Microsoft has been nothing but vocal regarding their unwillingness to adopt the format, but perhaps as time goes on and PS3 exclusive after PS3 exclusive dominates the market due to the capacity of Blu-ray and the power of the PS3, Microsoft will reconsider. Until then, we’ll just keep on enjoying, as Kevin Butler put it, the “PS3 sugar”.

[Alan Wake, the Remedy-developed psychological action thriller released exclusively for the Xbox 360 roughly a month ago, was a critical success, but sales figures for the game have been rather disappointing, at least by gaming standards. This begs the question… would Alan Wake be doing far better had it been released for the PlayStation 3? And more-so, would PlayStation 3 owners have had a better appreciation for it?

For those who may be unfamiliar with the title, Alan Wake casts you as, you guessed it, Alan Wake, a popular crime fiction author who hasn’t experienced a successful publish in years. He heads off to the country to try and get his creative juices flowing again, only to find himself falling into a horror story of his own. The gameplay is quite interesting, as players must use the power of light to fight off dark, deadly creatures and other baddies, while the story tries to work your mind every which way. The graphics, for the most part, are quite nice, with an array of good affects and excellent sound. So there you have it, you now know about Alan Wake, but let’s get into the sales figures and just why it may have fared better on the PlayStation 3.

The sales for Alan Wake, for the most part, have been rather disappointing, at least compared to other titles that, despite having vastly different gameplay styles, tackle the same sort of new IP, psychological crime-style, titles like Heavy Rain. Heavy Rain was developed by Quantic Dream, a company that had had past success with games like Indigo Prophecy, but never really had any phenomenally huge blockbuster releases. So essentially, Quantic Dream had very little momentum going into Heavy Rain’s release, aside from the chit-chat around the web and coverage from video game news outlets, even the commercial advertising wasn’t all that heavy, and yet the title managed to warrant over 520,000 units sold in its first week on the market due to the intriguing gameplay and intense story, still managing to move over 20,000 units per week nearly four months after its initial release.

The 360-exclusive Alan Wake, on the other hand, hasn’t managed to do quite as well, only managing to move around 260,000 units in its first week on the market, half that of Heavy Rain, even with past hits like Max Payne 1 & 2 under Remedy’s belt. Although both titles are vastly different, they did have the same, psychological thriller aspect in common along with a strong sense of quality and great gameplay. What didn’t Alan Wake have? A first-person viewpoint, incessant swearing, blood and gore everywhere; one or more of these aspects are typically found in successful 360 exclusives, not all, but most. This isn’t a bad thing, but many may question whether or not this trend may have hurt Alan Wake and hindered its ability to be accepted as a great game for the average gamer who may not be “in the know” when it comes to new releases, inevitably leading those releases to fly under the radar.

Interestingly enough, four of Remedy’s founding members were a part of the demoscene group Future Crew. So far, the only console to see anything demoscene related at all has been the PlayStation 3 with Linger In Shadows, which was a PSN exclusive; see the connection? It’s as though Remedy’s intriguing, thought-provoking style is destined to make its way onto the PS3 at some point or another. This genre of demoscene-inspired interactive digital art is nowhere to be found on the 360, but that’s another discussion for another time.

All-in-all these issues just have to make one wonder, do PS3 owners have a broader range of interest and acceptance for different game genres as opposed to Xbox 360 owners? Would Alan Wake have done better on the PlayStation 3? Many of the aforementioned figures and ideas would lead us to believe that Alan Wake would have not only been a critical success, but a financial one as well, had it debuted as either a multi-platform title or even a PlayStation 3 exclusive. As it stands now, Remedy has full rights over its games and properties, so if these sales figures do indeed send a strong enough message to the Finnish game developer, we could be seeing games like Alan Wake and the like making their way onto Sony’s big black behemoth.

Remedy, when you’re ready, PS3 owners will be here, waiting.

There is no doubting that Sony was late to the game with the PlayStation Network. Even though the PS2 did feature some online gaming, albeit very late in its lifecycle, it didn’t feature a robust, feature-filled platform like Xbox Live. The PlayStation Network launched along side the PS3 back in November of 2006 and has since grown into a thriving platform that is rivaling Xbox Live’s paid service. Despite Xbox Live’s 4 year head start, the PS3 has more users connected online that any other console.

According to new data released by US analyst The Diffusion Group, the PS3 is the most well connected console on the market. This is quite a surprise considering the Xbox 360′s lead in the US, and the fact Xbox Live has been around for 8 years. The research shows that 78% of PlayStation 3 owners are connected to the internet. The Xbox 360 comes in a close second at 73% and the Wii a distant third place with only 54% of users connected online.

Could this difference between the PS3 and Xbox 360 be attributed to the cost involved with getting your Xbox 360 online? Granted you can be connected to Xbox Live via a Silver Membership using the console’s Ethernet port. However the idea of having to pay an annual fee for the almost necessary Gold Membership is enough to steer some people from ever checking out 360′s online features. Another issue, again having to do with the Xbox 360′s admission to play online, is the fact you need to purchase some sort of wireless adapter to connect the console to your home’s wireless network. Something that isn’t an issue with the PS3 nor the Wii, both of which come with built in Wi-Fi out of the box.

The Nintendo Wii could be suffering from the fact its user base consists mostly of casual gamers. Causal gamers may not be as tech savvy as hardcore gamer and might have trouble setting up a wireless network. That, or many of the Wii owners just aren’t aware that the console can connect online. Then again, it could be because all of those Wii sports playing grannies at the senior center never even heard of the internet.

Whatever the reason may be, the PS3 just so happens to be the most connected console. Go ahead fanboys, head on over to forums and message boards and start spreading the word, you now have another reason to boast why the PS3 is the best console on the market. You know you were going to anyway!

Like this topic? Crysis 2. But the big question that many have been left asking, with Crytek being known for pumping out graphic intensive games, is whether or not the title will run and/or look better on the PlayStation 3 or the Xbox 360. Well, it looks like we’ve got an answer.

Outside of getting our hands on some actual screen shots, VG24/7 managed to snag an interview with Crysis 2 executive producer, Nathan Camarillo. Quite a number of things were discussed, including the possible differences between the PS3 and 360 versions of the game, to which Mr. Camarillo responded with the following:

The powerful thing about CryENGINE 3 is that it’s scalable, and it’s scalable for platforms. In the end, 360 and PS3 owners will probably get a very identically experience both visually and technologically.

We’re not going into details on that now, but in the end it’s all quality per platform. We want the best PC game, we want the best PS3 game, we want the best 360 game.

Additionally, Camarillo went on to say that each dedicated section of the development team are in constant competition, which should ensure a polished product regardless of platform.

We have two really strong internal teams on the programming side working on 360 and PS3 all the time, and they’re always in competition with each other. If you think “the internet” are going at each other about this, internally our developers are doing this as well.

For a week or two PS3 will look better, then the 360 guys go, “No, no, no, we won’t have that,” and they make the 360 version look and play better.

The Crysis series has seen tremendous success on the PC front, but can it succeed in a console market very much saturated by first person shooters? We’ll have to wait to find out when Crysis 2 hits the PS3, 360 and PC in late 2010, early 2011.
<hr

Since the 360’s introduction in 2005, Aaron Greenberg has reiterated on several occasions that the console features the most games, even more than the top-selling Nintendo Wii console. The 360 has seen some great titles over the years, and while many are also available on the PC, here are the Top 5 Xbox 360 games that PlayStation 3 owners wish they had.<br

BioWare’s sci-fi saga has been incredibly successful on the Xbox 360 as well as the PC, and this second installation of the series is no different. Whilst there has been several hints at Bioware considering a PS3 version of Mass Effect, it isn’t for certain and can be considered wishful thinking. With a Metacritic rating floating around the 95 range, Mass Effect 2 is arguably the best RPG so far this generation and a game that PS3 owners wish they had.
<div

Epic’s ‘epic’ franchise put the world at a standstill when released. The plot of the shooter may be simple, but the amount of polish put in to the title is truly outstanding and shines through with every aspect of the game. With improved controls and more diversity in gameplay than the first Gears of War, Gears of War 2 was a worthy successor to one of the best games in the past decade. The second installment in Cliff Bleszinski’s series sets an example of what shooters should deliver: an unforgettable pleasure of sheer awesomeness with its brilliant polish and gameplay elements.
<div

More than one million gamers played online within the first 24 hours after its release. These are some of the few facts which prove just how astronomically successful Halo 3 has been. Regarded as 360′s flagship exclusive, the shooter is the third title in the Halo series and concludes the story arc from its predecessors. Its multiplayer offerings are sublime in delivery and feature a range of content all soaked in quality. Introducing several addictive modes, at its peak Halo 3 sees millions of gamers battling it out online. The Bungie phenomenon may be ignored by PS3 owners who use Killzone 2 as a replacement, but it’s certainly a title that is desired in the PlayStation 3 library.
<div

A few great examples to define just that are Resident Evil 5, Dead Space and Call of Duty World At War’s zombie mode. However, while each of those games are outstanding, none of them offer the hectic 4-player cooperative experience that Left 4 Dead delivered in 2009. Some may complain that the game didn’t improve upon the first title as much as they had hoped, but there is no denying that Left 4 Dead 2 is one of the best cooperative experiences so far this generation.
<p

With multiple LinkdIn profiles hinting at a PlayStation 3 version of this popular stealth-action title, PS3 owners have been crossing their fingers. While its porting to the PS3 may or may not happen, there is no denying that Splinter Cell: Conviction is a great game. The intense stealth-action gameplay is some of the best we have seen in recent years. Not to mention that there is a cooperative experience bundled with the title. With a clear lack of stealth games in recent years, Splinter Cell: Conviction is a game that PS3 owners desire.
<p
