Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 Holds Back the Violence

Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 may be coming to PlayStation 3, bringing with it better features, improved graphics, and gameplay improvements. Although the Xbox 360 version of Ninja Gaiden 2 had immense levels of graphic violence, the PS3 version seems to be bringing that down a notch.

Though the title will still be M-rated, it’s just that the team behind Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 is cutting back on gratuitous violence. Before, floors would be drenched in blood from dismembering your enemies; now, the floor appears to be splattered. Instead of fountains of blood pouring from your enemies heads from a a brutal beheading, a blue magical glow replaces this. Producer Yosuke Hayashi explains his team’s decision behind this:

“Each game has its own concept and with Ninja Gaiden 2, the focus was on extreme violence. But with Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, we really questioned whether violence is a necessity for a game, so we decided to move away from that trend. So the violence ‘approach’ is not the way we approached the development of Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2. Being able to unlock higher levels of gore would be out of kilter with the concept of the game.”

With Tomonobu Itagaki out of Team Ninja’s picture, it seems the developer has taken a more mature approach to the Ninja Gaiden series. And this clues us in to how the team’s future titles will turn out.
