Netflix Just Not That Into PS3

Remember when we first told you about the prospect of Netflix streaming on your PS3, and even backed up our claim with a Netflix job opening? Yeah, well, you can forget about all that.

This past year has been filled with speculation surrounding the possibility of Netflix bringing their much acclaimed service to the PlayStation3. However, this morning, Microsoft decided to bring the hammer down, giving PS3 owners a much needed reality check via the latest Xbox Live update. In an excerpt from a support page detailing the update, Xbox 360 fanboys where greeted with new material that will undoubtedly be added to their flame war arsenal.

Netflix Partnership

This exclusive partnership offers you the ability to instantly stream movies and TV episodes from Netflix to the television via Xbox 360. Xbox 360 will be the only game console to offer this movie-watching experience, available to Xbox LIVE Gold members who are also Netflix unlimited plan subscribers**, at no additional cost.

We can’t help but wonder if the decision to leave the PS3 out in the cold and instead bring Netflix support  to BRAVIA owners was a conscious effort on Sony’s part. When you consider the success of the PSN Video Store, it’s hard to imagine that adding Netflix streaming into the mix would be in Sony’s best interests.
Netflix has yet to make an official statement on the matter, but hey, we still have PlayOn, right?
