Recently it was revealed by Polyphony Digital, the developer of the highly acclaimed Gran Turismo series, that the upcoming Gran Turismo 5 would feature headtracking. Many wondered exactly what this meant, and how it would be incorporated into the gaming environment.

Shortly after the announcement, Polyphony Digital stated the following:

“…the movement of Cockpit Camera interface (confirmed in full 3-D. The camera can be fully manipulated and you can opt to have your head tracked by the PSEye)”

Essentially, this technology utilizes the PlayStation Eye to track head movement while playing Gran Turismo 5. When the player moves the head, the ingame cockpit view reflects that exact movement. This technology basically allows the user to look to the sides of the car without having to press any buttons.

As a side note, this functionality is achieved using the PlayStation Eye, so in order to experience this you will have to cough up about $29.99 for this PS3 webcam. Thankfully, the PlayStation Eye is being incorporated into dozens of games in the near future, and will also be a requirement for the highly anticipated Sony Motion Controller.
