In a recent interview, Arne Meyer, Senior Manager, Marketing Communications for Naughty Dog, made some impressive remarks about the studios’ work on the engine for Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. Uncharted 2 is being hailed as one of the greatest games this year, and it is obvious that Naughty Dog put a lot of work into the base game engine.
When asked whether Naughty Dog likes to work on other game genres, aside from action-adventure, Meyer, replied, quite simply:
I think the future for us is wide open. We’ve got this engine that really lets us do everything, we’re really happy where we are, creating this action-adventure first person shooter. I think whatever we look for beyond that, we’ll try to create something that is uniquely our own.
With Uncharted 2 we’ve definitely gotten to the point where our blend of shooting combat, our exploration and climbing is very unique, and if we ever look at a different genre, we want to bring something new to the table, do something really unique. What that is, it’s really hard to tell. We want something to be different.
