PS3 Set to Overtake the Wii on Its Home Turf

2009 has been a great year for the PlayStation 3. The biggest change was the reveal of the PlayStation 3 Slim model, which, coupled with a pricebreak, has boosted sales for the past couple of months. Nowhere is that evident more than the PlayStation brand’s home, the Land of the Rising Sun.

That’s Japan in case you didn’t know. Anyway, Sony‘s little-console-that-could has been doing very well in sales over there. So well, in fact, that the PlayStation 3 is paced to outsell Nintendo’s Wii for the entire year. Current data for consoles sold in Japan from January 4th to October 24th of this year are as follows:

Wii: 1,012,924
PS3: 1,006,810
360: 284,943

Recent data suggests this will be the state of things when last week’s sales are tallied:

PS3: 1,044,310
Wii: 1,038,924
360: 294,943

If this trend continues, the Wii will have been outsold in yearly sales in Japan for the first time. Certainly good news for Sony! Stay with PlayStation LifeStyle for more on this and other news.
