The sound in Call of Duty 4 is almost equally as impressive. The sound effect quality is what fans have come to expect from Infinity Ward, including huge explosions that will shake you in your seat, and precise audio effects of over a dozen weapons. One of the most memorable elements of this title are the voice overs. Call of Duty 4 is one of the very few first-person shooter titles to have voice-overs that are as high-quality as a high-budget film. Each character throughout the game is voiced incredibly well, which adds a whole new layer of depth to the cinematic action experience. Topping it all off is the marvelous soundtrack which helps evoke emotion throughout the game.
When all is said and done, Call of Duty 4 houses a ton of replay value, which for the most part all exists in the multiplayer. The single player story mode can be completed in under 5 hours, and while the action is great, there isn’t much reason to return. However, the multiplayer is easily one of the richest experiences to be seen on the first-person shooter front. The ability to create a class and define the complete loadout ranging from secondary weapon to perks and grenades means tons of customization and variety. The multiplayer also sports 55 levels which all earn you something new to use as well as giving you new icons to show off your expertise. As if the online portion wasn’t enough, all of the elements of the online portion can also be experienced in split-screen mode with your friends. Call of Duty 4 is truly the epitome of a popular multiplayer shooter, and it is one of the first to merge both addictive RPG unlock elements with a competitive and highly enjoyable first-person shooter experience.
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare has become one of the benchmarks for future first-person shooter titles. The collaboration of an action-packed, albeit short, single player campaign with a rich multiplayer and split-screen experience make this one of the most entertaining titles in recent years. If you aren’t a fan of shooters or online multiplayer, then Call of Duty 4 might not be for you. For everyone else, however, this is a truly outstanding game that shouldn’t be missed.
